  • loquacious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah, the whole point is to avoid having to merchandise or sell ads as much as possible.

    Also, the real point is to deter linkspammers. Besides the $5 entry fee, a user must make three in-thread comments and wait a week before posting to the front page. That combined with the no-self-linking rule helps assure much higher quality links and discussions. We mostly like it just the way it is because of it.

    Hopefully his idea takes off and he can start making money on merchandising instead of having to pay a one-time fee.
