- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30I saw Roth sing on tv a couple years back. His voice was still pretty good and I wouldn't mind seeing them play together. The Roth years are Van Halen's best IMO.
- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Van Halen and the Police reuniting in the same year? Spooky.
First albums released in 1978.
Huge commercial breakthrough in 1984.
Sting/Roth leave for solo careers in 1985.
Reuniting in 2007. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I been to the edge
and there I stood and looked down
you know I lost a lot of friends there baby
I got no time to mess around..... - reed311, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Thanks for sharing, I was actually about to email you and ask you what you thought of this story.
- bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I've seen Roth play quite a few times over the past few years. He's progressively learned to work with the limitations of his voice. All those years of doing that primal screaming took it's toll. His solo band virtually only plays VH tunes, and his guitarist sounds better than Eddie has for years. Eddie played at Nam this year and sounded horrible. It's also going to be really weird seeing Ed's 15 year old son playing bass with them.
I'm not going to miss it when they come to NJ, but I actually think Dave is going to be the strongest one on the team.
- Br0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13the stones are still pulling it off, and they are like twice that age!
- toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13this is going to be either really good or really bad. fingers crossed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It's good..not as good as it wulda been 15 years ago... I mean, I'm not that excited to see 50 yr old men dancing on stage singing songs that will never get airplay cause hip hop (sadly) rules the world now.
but still, I'll buy an album :) - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25In a related story, "has" rejoins "beens."
- kavery, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'm really going to miss Michael Anthony on bass. It just isn't the same without him.
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I love Van Halen. I became a music fan through the playing of both Eddie and Alex... I've been to at least 4 shows. However... the last time I heard VH live they sounded like *****. Like worse than a garage band.
The best way to re-live Van Halen these days is to see a good cover band... it's a shame, but it is what it is. - pype, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Dear Baby Jesus,
I thank you for answering my prayers and smiting that stupid Sammy Hagar. Lord, you too appreciate the idiocy of "I can't drive 55".
Sweet, sweet Jesus - with your holy appreciation for the dulcet tones of "Jamie's Cryin" - Please watch over Diamond Dave in this time of incredible friggin awesomeness. Awesomeness that is second only to you, magnificent Son of God.
I also pray for front row seats. And that they whip ass on "Hot for Teacher"
Amen. - smartpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Of course it will be disappointing. They're obviously just doing this for money and publicity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8When they first broke up, I think most people were on Van Halen's side. But now, as more and more info comes out from all the OTHER replacements, it looks like the Van Halen brothers are the pricks.
Sammy Hagar lasted awhile because success and money has a way of helping you ignore how badly you are treated. But the days of 5X platinum CDs for Van Halen are long gone. And with it is Eddie and eAlex's ability to piss people off with immunity. - Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Rush.
- pype, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13They are replacing him with Anthony Michael Hall, so it evens out.
- smojo12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I have a feeling they are going to be disappointing to see live....I still am going to grab tickets to see them.
Guess we will have to wait and see - demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I'd rather see Roth perform with The Muppets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We'll see how long this lasts. Remember they did it already. LAsted a few months.
- jayscottgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6with David, Wolfgang, and Eddie drinking again, what an awesome freakshow that's gonna be!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6this is clearly the most ambitious "punk'd" episode ever.
- maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I bet they won't make it out of the first few practices.
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7right now i just might as well JUMP!!!! (for joy)
- mstrebe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, it's always disappointing when people do things for money and fame. There are so many other good reasons to do things.
- dubled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5jeez I'm getting old. EVH friggin son is in the band?
Then again EVH is not getting any younger: http://www.tonyrogers.com/images/2004_0723_vanhalen/ed_golf.jpg - MobbyG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's like that whole Kennedy/Lincoln thing... freaky...
But, as a fan of both DLR (Solo) and the Van Halen days of Roth, I'd be willing to plunk down the change to see them. I saw Van Hagar and wasn't disappointed. - HouseofEl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know I used to love Van Halen. I accepted both Roth and Hagar. Hell, I even gave that other dude a shot. However, that ship has sailed. They're about 10 years too late. Roth doesn't have the chops anymore and Eddie is back on the sauce. Besides, Michael Anthony is out? How will this be a reunion? You got one back and but ditched another? How much you wanna bet they don't make it through the entire tour?
- jayyoung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The title of the article should have ended with ".....again!"
and the description should have read "Sammy is jealous .....again!" - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wolfgang has been playing guitar since he could hold one. He was playing erupition with his dad on stage when he was around 7-8 if I remember right. It'll be interesting to see how he plays bass.
- fiveoaks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bippity Bop!
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've always liked Van Halen, and when Roth left the band back in the 80s and Hagar joined, I thought it would suck; but it didn't. When I listen to their music now and compare, I like Hagar better. I didn't mind the Best of Volume 1 songs that Roth did. They were OK. But I think Hagar brought a well-roundedness to the band that Roth wasn't able to.
- Holyfool19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Brown: The Stones do not get any radio airtime, unless you mean on classic rock radio stations, or maybe sattelite radio.
Van Halen is a good band, its best years way behind, both David Lee Roth and Sammy Haggar have brought an incredible amount of talent to the group.
I wish they would just keep everyone in the band at once. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How screwed-up is it that Wolfgang is playing bass, though? Wolfgang is a nice enough kid, but he's 15. It's been 22 years since the original band broke up. Nobody's dead. Swallow that goddamn pride and work with the original lineup. Nobody wants to know how well your kid plays bass. If they were curious about his musical talent they'd have been at his piano recitals. All they had to do was deal with each other for a couple of hours a night, three or four days a week for a few months. Even the least coherent slacker in Portland could manage a part-time job around people they didn't really like for three months. Especially with a legion of personal assistants running around making sure everything was hunky-dory 24/7.
These guys could screw up a sunny day. - Bridgetown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who cares what they look like? Who cares about a guitar player's hip replacement? You don't play guitar with your hips.
I hope they rock. - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow.......just....Wow!
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Cool but I read about it last week... :P
http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/search/google/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003537232 - Bridgetown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet.
- glowend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a video of Diamond Dave doing a bluegrass version of Jump later in the article.
- deut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@broomett
Actually, I think Mike contributed just as much to the sound of the band with his backing vocals as with his bass playing. - ck01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He was probably cheap and that's why the got him. Roth got fired just a few months ago from his radio show and needs a job. His unemployment insurance is about to run out.
- PaulieCoconuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let's face it. This is the classic line-up.
Sammy had his kicks with Montrose and solo while the original VH was still kickin' it in the late 70's and early 80's.
Sam Halen (or Van Hagar) had it's own unique sound and they spread the music out a little wider with different style tunes and arrangements. Sammy rocks, no doubt about it. DLR did his own thing, and it was cool, but Sammy stood alone as a solo artist long before he joined the group (Standing Hampton, V.O.A, "I Can't Drive 55", Three Lock Box).
This is the same Van Halen that we were used to, only different, Back to the future. The original flavor.
And to anyone who doubts that Dave can still spin a rap or is convalescing in a wheelchair or has gone insane somewhere, check THIS out.... (watch the whole thing to find out the origin of "Panama")

Go Dave! The Frank Sinatra of hard rock!
Looking forward to the tour. - Synchro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Eddie seems to have gone to the Keith Richards School of Growing Old.
Ridden hard and put away wet. - ck01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Their new stuff, which has been circulating for the past 5 years will hit record stores during the first week of March. It's not that good and everyone has heard it already.
- davidleeroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2David Lee Roth IS Van Halen. All this is going to be is another DLR reunion show (but I'm not missing it for the world).
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Some how I knew this was coming after his radio-jockey career collapsed at FreeFM.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This'll be interesting.
One of the best concerts I ever saw was DLR with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. One of the worst I ever saw was DLR without them. - Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So how many other times has this been official already? At this point, who even cares?
By reading some of the responses here, more people than there really ought to be... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seperated at birth: EVH and Gollum.
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=3&entry_id=12940 - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2all that drinking sure messed up eddie's face, no teeth or anything.
