- Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Some of these are just flat out wrong...
Pantera was based on the town Vinnie and Dime were from. It has nothing to do with spanish.
"The word "pantera" means "panther" in a number of other languages, but the name itself is derived from the band's home town of Pantego, Texas. "
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantera - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11A lot of the stories are fake. ;) I think a lot bands just come up with names that sound interesting, and then build a story for them later.
- strom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"ANTHRAX - A dangerous bacteria that used to infect many cattle in Europe & could be used for terrorism."
Yes, thanks for letting us in on that secret. - foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9One other thing.
"KMFDM - KEIN MEHRHEIT FÜR DIE MITLEID, loosely translates as "no sympathy for the majority." Founded by SASCHA KONIETZKO from Germany. When Englishman RAYMOND "PIG" WATTS joined the band he never pronounce the name so he just started calling it by the initials."
I used to believe:
KMFDM Stood for Kill Mother ***** Depche Mode.
Or
Kill Madonna For Drug Money. - whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no Rammstein? it's an interesting story...
- foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"THE CULT - Goth/Rock band 'The Cult' were once known as 'The Sudden Death Cult', then
shortened to 'Death Cult', then finally just 'The Cult'. "
Actually their original name was the Southern Death Cult http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cult
Although the Wikipedia article doesn't mention it at all, the rumor was when I was a kid, in the U.S., the band decided to change their name because people in the States where associating their name with the KKK. Which is probably just nonsense.
Good Digg though. - readme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I always thought the Pearl Jam story was fake and it was just another name for semen.
- Maniaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What I want to know is where "Digg" came from :)
- africanherbsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Jefferson Airplane: The term 'Jefferson airplane' is also slang for a used match bent to hold a marijuana joint that has been smoked too short to hold without burning the hands; an improvised roach clip. An urban legend claims this was the origin for the band's name, though according to band member Jorma Kaukonen, the name was invented by his friend Steve Talbot as a parody of blues names such as 'Blind Lemon' Jefferson'.
- oriolesfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love this story for Better Than Ezra (not in article):
At a "Battle of the Bands" they were still nameless at that time and a band called "Ezra" just got done with a set that wasn't taken warmly, then when they were up they had to tell everyone a name and they called themselves "Better Than Ezra"
-wikipedia - djNullSpace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It says it's rumours, what's everyone getting all pissed about? Just take it as a fun read, digg it if you like, and move along.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6BACKSTREET BOYS - The Backstreet Market was a store in Florida where the guys used to hang out.
Yes, they were "hanging out". - itoldyouso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why can't people search before they submit a story e.g. band names
I hate duped stories (espcially as recently as this one was) a month ago.
LAME - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Speaking of KKK, The Black Crowes producer originally suggested they name the band, Kob Kounty Krowes, i.e. KKK.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've never heard of any of those bands... not a single one of them.
- cresswga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Texas and Travis both got their names from the film Paris, Texas.
And whilst not really in fitting with that list, Enya was called that because it was the phonetic spelling of her name which was Irish.
I also thought Sleeper were named after the Woody Allen film but I don't know if that is true.
Otherwise I am just glad Toad the Wet Sprocket were included. Great name and a great band. - subversive1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funniest band name I have seen is "The Fred Mertz Experience".
- ubpsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're British aren't you?
And I was hoping to see Teardrop Explodes as well. - cabazorro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How bands got their name..
Genesis:
From the book of Genesis.
Wow! This guy must work for Stone Phillips at Nightline.
How about:
Genesis:
"I got not freaking clue on the how and why they picked up such name. - MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Echo & The Bunnymen (I think I knew this at one time, but forgot)"
The original story went something to the effect that Echo was the name the band had given their drum machine and 'Bunnymen' was a name they had given themselves.
According to a later biography, they said they just made up the name and liked it because it was just as stupid as 'Teardrop Explodes', their rival band at the time. - aan4nd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is only one place a band need get their name these days.
http://www.nowformaband.com/ - Awap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"STEELY DAN - taken from William Burrough's book Naked Lunch. In it Steely Dan is the nickname given to a giant steam-powered dildo (see cover photo on their first album)"
When I read this, I imagine a porno featuring such a device: one person is having a lot of fun, but the other is stuck shoveling coal. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nirvana sucked.
ohGr on the other hand, rocks. - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone British should know where Darling Buds and Soup Dragons got their names - from the book The Darling Buds of May and the childrens TV show The Clangers.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, not British...I'm on the other side of the pond. My musical tastes are just all over the place, that's all. I like a bunch of different stuff.
- jaxxon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not entirely on topic, but nonetheless:
http://www.techism.com/cgi-bin/band_name/generator.pl - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Name of a German Airfield where an airshow crash killed many people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramstein_airshow_disaster - nocode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know the Grandma thing is a fake story. The thing about Mookie Blaylock is true, but I'm not sure if that was his nickname. I forget how 'Pearl Jam' correlates to Mookie Blaylock, but their first album 'Ten' was Mookie's number. Before Pearl Jam, they actually called themselves the Mookie Blaylock band (or something akin to that).
- Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also speaking of the KKK, as a kid, I wasn't allowed to listen to 311 because my parents were under the impression that the name was 3 11's, 11 being the letter K in the alphabet. Hence, KKK.
- dbt777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was hoping to see where Modest Mouse got their name from... :(
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg, it doesnt have the story behind The Captain and Tennille name. lol, I kid.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Scanning through the decidedly stranger sections of my music collection...I'd like to know where these bands got their names...

Echo & The Bunnymen (I think I knew this at one time, but forgot)

Bubble Puppy
Darling Buds
Embryo Infinity Rebirth
Fifty Foot Hose
Glass Family
Kingsbury Manx
Ladybug Transistor
Lothar and the Handpeople

Ultimate Spinach - quotato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Black Sabbath is from an old Hollywood Movie titled "Black Sabbath" starring Boris Karloff. And before that band name, they were called Earth, and before Earth some of the members were from a band called Polka Tulk. I am typing this from my memory, not cut and paste from the all Holy Oracle Wikipedia.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BLINK 182 - Blink 182 supposedly has NO meaning at all but the band fosters stories on origins. Sample: used to be just "Blink" but was threatened by a lawsuit from a little known Irish band with the same name, so they added the 182 which is the number of times the f-word was said in one of the members favorite movies.
Scarface I do believe. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some place in Florida had a huge contest to name the band, the list was insane I recall.
- Dust3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hah, thats funny i was just wondering what yo la tengo meant today
- Recoiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The rest of the article (joke):
Fall Out Boy -- One of them probably lived near a nuclear testing facility
All-American Rejects -- Uh, people threw rocks at them?
Aerosmith -- Maybe some dude wore Aeropostle and was named Smith
Three Doors Down -- One of the members had a something three doors from his house, like Kevin Rose lived there - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds a lot of Gazeebow Unit. There's a parody rap group around here that makes fun of what we call "skeets" (read the wikipedia article on Skeet (slang) in Newfoundland)... the name comes from the fact that the members all hung out at some random gazebo.
- NikZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5"I used to believe:
KMFDM Stood for Kill Mother ***** Depche Mode.

In Australia they used to say it was "Kylie Minogue Fans Don't Masturbate", a play on the general perception that Minogue's fan base is/was largely pre-pubescant. - ThomasCJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bob Dylan one is wrong. There's a quote on his wikipedia article.
- asdfer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anthrax
Scott Ian said that he thought the "X" sounds cool. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Their original name was Los Lobos de Este de Los Angeles (The Wolves of East Los Angeles), and they named themselves that in tribute to a Mexican Norteno band called Los Lobos Del Norte.
- djNullSpace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2 It says it's rumours, what's everyone getting all pissed about? Just take it as a fun read, digg it if you like, and move along.
- Charron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Looking at Wikipedia, they pulled it from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark On the Wall" in which the author described the working middle class as "modest, mouse-coloured people." No clue *why* they pulled that, but that's the source.
- carterazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The one about DMX is wrong. He used to beat-box back in the day and the beat machines at the time was called DMX. He uses Dark Man X as a play on a already used nickname.
- jordkett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nickelback: The bass player, Mike Krueger would always buy a coffee from a local coffee shop... It cost 1.95, he paid two bucks every day... Eventually the cashier gave him the name "Nickelback" and it got put into the band name
- ike368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a lot of those weren't true. i just HAPPENED to be reading about chumbawamba the other day on wikipedia, and it said it was just a nonsense word. but i heard this site's explenations back in the day
- Tokiko2794, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The anecdote on Pearl Jam is toatally confused.
- Yes, Ament and Gossard liked the former New Jersey Nets player, Mookie Blaylock- or at least his name..
- Yes, they actually wanted to name the band "Mookie Blaylock," at first.
- Although there are stories abound about hallucigenic jam or jelly... AND "Pearl Jam" may be a nickname for Blaylock (Not so sure about that one.... I don't think so.)....
Mookie Blaylock was paid homage to in their first album, Ten. Ten was Blaylock's uniform number. But you'll also hear stories about how their record label didn't want to name their first album "Five Against One," as well. (Apparently they submitted this as an album name twice. The first time, it was shot down. The second time, they just shortened the album's name down to Vs.
Oh, and another little tidbit: Anyone that thinks the album name "Ten" came from the number of hands showing on the album cover.... is wrong. It's purely coincidence. The title's actually an homage to Blaylock. lol - o2sk8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not even kidding, I was wondering today while driving my car whether a site like this exists. Digg GET OUT OF MY HEAD.
- djmayne2001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yeah naming is a difficult thing. My friend just decided to stick with his original name. He has a new site at www.robinbaileyonline.co.uk. You may also like my buddies rap music. You can find him on myspace. He is called aggi dukes. He has changed his name several times.
