- Dakana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+86Why did the cameraman think we cared about the audience?
Talented young man - this is an original composition of his, too! - Prem0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+63There is a crowd pan over at the beginning, it starts showing the performer around the 1:42 mark.
- Spikito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4450 seconds in, headbanger.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Yeah, doesn't really seem all that spectacular at first, then he starts trying.
- dcode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Yea, the camera guy sucked, but definitely worth seeing anyway.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33There is a point where he is actually playing music - and another where he is just showboating a bit. I'm not sure 'fast' always means good.
- feaks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I'm sure he kicks ass in Rayman Raving Rabbids on Wii.
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I had no idea this instrument existed, but I now want one.
- Walker2323, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24The cameraman probably needs to be murdered.
- sp1keNARF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18jester309 has obviously never seen john petrucci, shawn lane, or paul gilbert.
- elk1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29should have been crowned world's most emo hammered dulcimer player
- n3rrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Who the hell gets into a pissing contest over "fastest guitarist" in a thread about a Dulcimer? Guitarists have to be the most insecure instrumentalists around. Always flaunting their ***** and nay saying everyone else.
There are plenty of fast guitarists...
Frank Gambale
Shawn Lane
Michael Angelo Batio from Nitro
Yngwie Malmsteen
Paul Gilbert from Racer X
Herman Li from DragonForce
Sam from DragonForce
Buckethead
Speed and style? Justin King, Tommy Emmanuel, etc. etc. The list goes on and on.
And there are fast banjoists, like Bela Fleck. There are fast bassists like Victor Wooten and Les Claypool. It's funny that when you speak about fast guitar, people automatically lean towards metal when Frank and Shawn clearly show the speed can be found else where. - oriondr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12How do you think he got as fast as he is?
- jblade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Must have been so freaking annoying to sit behind that lady shaking her head all over the place.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Dugg for the various Dream Theater offerings...

The rarity of the hammer dulcimer as an instrument makes this slightly more impressive to the average listener than a piano player.
However, I will make this comment on the composition:
There's something to be said for simplicity. Mozart is hailed as one of the greatest composers to ever live, and if you ever listen closely to his music, there's nothing this ornately complex. It's showy, but it's not really evocative of anything. I don't feel anything but "Wow, that's some fast duclimer playing." In my opinion, music should be more about drawing out the emotions in your audience first, rather than showing off how talented you are with your instrument. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Since the YouTube audio is mono and heavily compressed, here's a better quality clip of the same song: http://www.maxzt.com/audio/track02.mp3
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Or Mike Portnoy.
- oriondr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No kidding. When someone is performing you're supposed to show the performer not the friggin audience.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QRRQetY6z9U - Ltgeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The question is, is he still this good when he's not hammered? I mean I'm the world's best 70's dancer when I'm hammered...
- pahoehoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Neiby
Or close your eyes and listen to the first part while the camera pans... the music is very good. Musically I liked the first part better anyway. The crowd pan was very annoying... and rude to the performer. - swifty12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@jivinjerd
What kind of internet connection do you have that you have to surf the web while you wait for a youtube video to load? And anyway the first 1:50 was good, it just wasn't the fast part. - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7speed? ok... then how about the reigning speed metal band, Dragonforce: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuX2QaEG_8s
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Freaking cool. Skip the crowd shot and fast forward to the good stuff.
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed, while the composition was not that great, he just went off on a tangent half way thru and starts going crazy... I admire his techniques especially the one where he's almost like playing with 3-4 hands, but the arrangement and the performance of the music was rather boring.
and am I the only one who thought it sounded very much like the ancient chinese music played on those huge string instruments? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I love the one kid in the crowd thats high.
- satanatnmtedu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have seen hands just as fast or faster in drum corps. Marimba players who cover larger areas with just as much speed.

Inaccurate. - Gigabyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very Cool... Didn't need the ALL CAPS title though :/
- deepdiggdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very fast but who can listen to that kind of music for more than a few minutes? I'd love to hear him play some classical pieces that require more harmonic changes.
- Jolls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Haven't seen Lane or Gilbert, but Petrucci's hands are a blur. Too friggin' good he is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6ya that guy kicks ass
definately restores some faith in human potential (which suffers on digg with all the 'watch this guy face plant' movies) - greenrider, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What a waste of talent.
If he's the world's best hammered dulcimer player, just imagine how good he'd be at the dulcimer if he stayed sober. - tmesis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey, while we're comparing apples to oranges, let me point you to ...
http://www.getaclueyouidiot.com - novaneil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Phil Collins as a drummer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Need to add the following to the description:
"open link in new window, hit pause, surf the net while it loads, go back to video, and skip over the first 1:50 of crap." - DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I suppose it would be good if the cameraman wasn't so crap.
- ryodoan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I totally agree with you. While I was impressed with how fast he could play, I didnt really feel that his piece of music was that harmonic.
It sounded to me like there was a lot of discord and off-pitch notes, almost like he was making mistakes. However, seeing as he won, I would have to say those were part of the music.
I never thought I would see the day when a movie with one of these instruments made it to the front page of digg. - democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It wasn't amazingly fast (I'm a drummer...playing fast isn't tough at all), and I heard a LOT of wrong notes in there. I did enjoy the music, but c'mon.
It's like when people watch Drumline and think the players are oh-so-talented. It's really just flashy. I'd much rather listen to someone play good music. It got annoying to listen to the guy play fast for 2 minutes after the awesome, slower stuff he was playing before.
Overrated. Moving on... - DanLuke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Your idea of a rebuttal for a dulcimer solo is a jazz drummer? Are you serious?
I mean you pluck strings for both a regular guitar and a bass guitar, but there is a whole world of difference between them. - awasson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's amazing about this guy is that while he's playing at 200MPH he's got several melodies working off of each other and his timing is incredible. For him to be able to keep up with all of this at that speed and then shift gears and go off on a tangent in another key is something else to listen to. Wish it wasn't in mono.
- Antha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow. That gave me goose bumps.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the samples provided, speed doesn't mean much about the ability to play well. Isn't Eric Clapton called "Slowhand"? Isn't he supposed to be pretty good? Is it because he plays really fast and hits all the 64th notes? I'm just saying; I personally prefer my guitar riffs slow and crunchy.
- dafrigginpope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that was impressive
- operator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I used to play the hammered dulcimer for a few years and there was nothing particularly special going on there - that said he played as well as other accomplished players. Couple of things to note - the hammered dulcimer is not fully chromatic so it is fairly easy to fly around it and not hit any really wrong notes if you have played it for a while. Secondly, with a little practice on the strings, which are basically as taut as a piano you get really fast feedback and the bounce lets you fly. No comment on the camera work.
- ProvidenceCrow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@LycoLoco, Portnoys hands are not that fast at all compared to a lot of the death metal drummers that have popped up in recent times that make speed their job.
Portnoy while awesome at his instrument has nothing on the speed scale compared to a lot of other guys out there, such as Flo Mounier: (watch his hands at around 3:10) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ayqcCrSXfo
Note: I am not saying that Flo is a better drummer than Portnoy, just faster (although there is no denying hes damn good haha) - systemlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you actually want to know pretty much the fastest hands around it has to be lubomyr melnyk, the fastest piano player in the world no one knows about, he also olds the world record for most notes in an hour (around 40 thousand i think), and can play up to 40 notes PER second PER hand.
you can actually learn his method 'continuous music' under him.
oh and his music isn't just showmanship, he really is one of the best pianists out there in my opinion.
http://www.lubomyr.com/ - isfan, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1not as fast as this http://digg.com/extreme_sports/Fastest_Gunman_In_t ...
- ohsnap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1reminds me a lot of the Dead Can Dance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do5vj3D-OD4
