- Rolandami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its about time, the Dead was all about sharing their music.
- terminalfreeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was gonna submit this when this story came up.
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Grateful%20Dead
there's a link to archive. - xoip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank God for The Tapers!

oh, and W00h00t! - mocheeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was immensely pissed about them taking down all the music before. Too bad we can't have the sound board recordings back. I can see why the drummers (Mickey and Bobby) need cash. They don't have successful touring bands, and they don't have as many writing credits. They need a source of income. If this means they have to sell soundboard recordings on iTunes, then I guess that's ok with me. I just think Mickey should write some more history books though. :)
- phishyJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im glad i got all those sbd's off archive while i could...
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet.

- seenthefuture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But man, they won't post the soundboard recordings anymore.
- aronoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell YES!!!
- genrebusters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, bad-white-country-blues here I come!
j/k - no dis. intended just a friendly jab at the dead heads from this floyd head!
i thought all the "jam bands" allowed free trading of their music? why is this news? please inform... - vicsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone who most likely has a bank account in the high seven to low eight digits, a paid off home, and paid off college educations for their kids (who are now earning tons of $ in their own right) REALLY need a "source of income?"
I probably don't speak for all deadheads, but I know for sure that I'm still going to pay for the Dick's Picks they put on iTunes or sell from their site, buy their DVDs, t-shirts, keychains, etc., regardless of whether or not I download all the shows on Archive (Not to mention that it would take a real long time to do so anyway).
Phil's on tour. Bobby's on tour. Mickey and Billy have the option to go out with them in either of their bands, not to mention two successful summers of "The Dead" on tour (I'd like THAT incarnation to come back more often). Don't be fooled. They're doing just fine.
I can understand them taking down the soundboards-- the tapers didn't tape those, they are, in fact, the intellectual property of the band and they can do as they wish with them. I'll still buy a share of sbd's in the future, especially if I dl an aud and it strikes me as something I'd rather have the sbd for. Then again, you don't hear the audience on most of the sbds and it's nice to hear the claps, cheers and singing along-- you know, the stuff you actually heard along with the band when you were there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GREATFUL dead. Not Grateful. jeez.
- ilikemonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The GD camp has not yet stated that you CAN'T trade or BT their SBD shows. There are a ton of places you can still freely trade them.
It was nice to have all the shows in one place, but they're still out there.
i downloaded four shows last night.
B - Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like Phil wasnt just covering his ass but was outvoted by Weir, Billy and Spock and that John Perry Barlow (Dead lyricist and EFF guru) tore Weir a new one over this.
Oh yeah, and ***** Deborah Yoko Koons, that late-coming Anna Nicole wannabee
who is gonna ride Jerry's image for all its worth. Cant wait for that cow to release the video of his funeral which she taped for 'future use'.
And seriously, why would you run an audio of Phil singing as you arrive on his website? He was definitely a special bass player but even hardcore deadheads wince at him singing Unbroken Chain...or any song.
To quote Phil from his 1996 testimony:
"The last 30 years are one big, smoky haze -- except for a few bright moments." - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"...10's of people heard singing in the streets..."

anyhow its good to see them back even if just for streaming.....that said i'm snatching up as many sbds as possible right now - jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great news indeed. nothing like listening to some live grateful dead.
somebody needs to smack dolby upside the head for asking who the grateful dead are, and genrebusters you wouldn't need to be informed on why this is news if you read the article. - mocheeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is news because just the other day, Jerry's whore of a widow (and apparently the drummers) made archive.org take down all downloads of the live shows. Deadheads spoke out, and now we have this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they almost pulled a lars.
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The original idea to take the recordings down and market them was probably suggested to them by their lawyers and accountants to bring them additional revenue.
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"GREATFUL dead. Not Grateful. jeez."
no you fool its the Grateful Dead. - Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES!!!
- Stuart.n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, If I did happen to misspell it, then it's Microsoft's fault. I use Outlook to spell check my stuff. So, I'm coping out the only way I reliably can, blame Microsoft.
- Adamkelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh - SOUNDBOARDS... I was wondering what the deal was until I saw that.
I hafta say, I don't mind them hanging onto their soundboards. I mean, that should be theirs. AUDs are fair game. Similar to Phish's policy of blessing all trading except releases and soundboards from AFTER they began disallowing them. - gluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"GREATFUL dead. Not Grateful. jeez."
No, Grateful Dead. Not Greatful. jeez.

Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin. - Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet! A friend of mine used to trade tapes over a BBS before the days of the internet. I wonder which of the millions of versions of Terrapin Station will be available. lol
"What a long strange trip it's been." - Evad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0slack
they don't have a policy againt getting sbds yet
so head on over to bt.etree.org and start downloading - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No really, who are the Grateful Dead?
- CAPSLOCK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will be listening to these when I get my upcoming and sorely needed dental work done. Ahhhhh....surgical gas.
- daddydeadhead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0PRESS RELEASE:
Donegal Publishing, LLC has announced the release of "One Hundred Things I'll Miss About Grateful Dead Land" by Christine M. Dunne. ISBN 978-0-8788128-1-2. The book is available at all online book sellers - Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc., or buy direct from: www.jerryland.net
"One Hundred Things I'll Miss About Grateful Dead Land" was written by a lifelong "Deadhead" who has been attending their shows since the age of five. Beautifully designed and illustrated, the book is written in a way that captures the times and helps the reader appreciate and relive the feeling of what it was like to attend a Grateful Dead Concert. All true deadheads will appreciate this book. Includes unpublished photos of Bob Weir. - skewh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! I'm extremely excited.
- CAPSLOCK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The support taping, allow taping, and allow free trade of their shows on a small scale and by any means other than digital (CD, tape, DAT, etc.)"
CD and DAT are both digital formats, but I know what you mean. I'm a nit-picky bastard. - jflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There have been a good number of bands that support taping and trading that are against online trading because it takes out the communal factor. The Allman Brothers come to mind. Nickel Creek is another
The support taping, allow taping, and allow free trade of their shows on a small scale and by any means other than digital (CD, tape, DAT, etc.) - pfdogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesn't mean anything until the SBDs come back online for d/l.
- jflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By "soundboards", I wonder if they mean all soundboards, or only official soundboard recordings? There was a time when bands would let tapers patch into the soundboard to get their recordings.
- why27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do not think any one member of the dead family are stressing on money.
Bob Weir's band "Ratdog" does just fine on tour, In-fact it is an excellent show!
Hopefully the SBD'S will be back up soon, Either way at least live versions are back.
P.S. All of Phish's band members are doing excellent side projects, that amount to more then Phish as a whole. - neutrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hammerattack you have no idea what you're talking about.
Phish, also, isn't on the archive but their shows (along with quite a few dead shows) are traded on etree. - hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What do you say at a Grateful Dead concert when you run out of pot?
Man... this music sucks! (As I'm listening to Casey Jones I realize, crystal meth may have been an option... "watch your speed".)
So... when is Phish going to get on the bandwagon. Then, not only can we have bootleg Dead tunes free for the download, but we can even have shoddy covers of bootleg Dead tunes. - bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05/8/77 was always such a great SBD link to send to people. here's the audience recording which is all that's left. It's worth listening to, if you don't know the Dead and are wondering why people give a crap.
