- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is a great article as I'm always trying to find new music. As anyone knows, it's almost painful to listen to local radio stations (especially my area) and hear the same songs over and over again.
I've used Pandora only a couple times and have already found 3 or 4 new artists I enjoy.
Also, my brother swears by http://www.garageband.com for music, but I haven't found much that I liked. - ocram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Something like PandoraFM?
http://pandorafm.real-ity.com/ - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I love last.fm
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No surprise that last.fm won this test easily...
- AdverseEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Pandora FTW.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://www.albumbase.com - 31555 free albums, amen.
- dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4last.fm and pandora as well...
i have been using lastfm for almost a year and a half now and have been thrilled with the service. however i've just recently tried pandora, and have been very very impressed. last.fm is a great tool for tracking what you are listening to - however, it's not as good at recommending music. pandora seems to do a lot better and they seem to have a more diverse amount of music (though your mileage may vary, depending on your tastes.)
i'd like to combine pandora's recommendation with last.fm's tracking service, that'd be the ultimate service. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Music recommendation:
The worst music videos of all time. Hilarious!
http://www.clipbin.blogspot.com/ - toddomatic, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I've been playing with MusicIP Mixer (software/service) for the past few days and have been pretty impressed:
http://www.musicip.com/
It's recommends and creates mixes based on your music library. I'm finding more gems in my own library, rather than playing the same play lists over-and-over again. - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, im suprised http://www.gnod.net/ / http://www.music-map.com/ didn't make the article.
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pandora is good. but anything is better than hearing 10 minutes of commercials followed by one overplayed cookie cutter instant hit song on the radio.
- djrtitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty good unbiased review. I'm a last.fm user myself so i enjoyed hearing about the other music recommendation services.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah albumbase has a really large quality selection.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The site is going through a pretty extensive overhaul, so your radio problems are probably related to that (I have the same issue sometimes, and some people can't get any artists no matter how popular to spawn a radio station.)
As for the artists--it all depends on what the users are submitting. It gets very obscure in some areas, less so in others, since there's no lexicon of music anywhere and the people are volunteering information based on what THEY like. - SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I too have used Pandora and last.fm. I would have never known the world of un-signed, GOOD artists was it not for the RIAA acting like douche-bags. And with car radio I always missed the names of the song/band that I liked.

(for when it goes out) - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this article. I didn't know most of these services were out there. I only recently discovered last.fm, and I love it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2gotta try rock.com. over 50 channels to choose from, PLUS indie corner where the new bands show their stuff...
- KILLDxM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having been with Last.FM since it was mostly Audioscrobbler, I can easily say that they've come a LONG way in the development of services: information gathering and processing, radio services, etc. I only wish they'd clean up some of the profile and chart processing, so that it'd be a touch speedier. That said, I have over 71000 tracks played, so most of them won't trigger updates for a while, heh. Anyhow, yeah. Love it. Digg+ just for LFM.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Pandora, last fm, souslseek, mininova, the piratebay to discover new music
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do you have any dislikes using this software? I've got way to much music on my computer to just browse for an artist every time i wanna hear a certain kind of music. I'll probably give that application a shot when I get home.
- anansewill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.peer2link.com for truly free music
- rishdeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd recommend The Hype Machine too: http://hype.non-standard.net/ - check out the popular tracks section for some guaranteed good music ( http://hype.non-standard.net/playlist/popular/now/m3u/1/today.m3u - open with Winamp, more streaming options on the site), and you can find downloads of the tracks on the blogs too.
The article did hit the nail on the head though: Pandora and Last.fm = the ***** - SlumberJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another interesting beta is Audiobaba (audiobaba.com). It claims to "layer" together the "human factor" approaches like those used with LastFM and Pandora, along with acoustic analysis of MusicIP, then also learns how your own mind works over time. Kinda sci fi.
Anyway, it's a plug in for iTunes and WMP that does three thing (gives "three wishes" according to their genie-speak). It can create playlists from your own collection; run intelligent auto DJ (Genie Auto GJ - cute) from your own collection (works like Pandora with a thumbs up/thumbs down); and it can find new music recommendations online based on your currently playing song.
The recommendations are somewhat wacky at the moment, I think because they are only working with one small content provider at the moment. The app can also take a while to load up initially, depending on the number of songs you have. My friend had a few bugs with it but they seemed quite willing to help him out. It's worked fine for me. The interface does a good job of keeping the functionality pretty clear, but i would like a way to minimize it all to the tray. - dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ocram
! bingo !
thanks man! - schwab002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pandora is good but it stills throws in crappy out of place songs every few tracks no matter how much it 'learns' about my tastes. still better than lastfm's radio i guess. lastfm is still an incredible service and great resource though.
- enderu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think a lot more went into the 9 rating it deserved than just it's music recommending capabilities (despite the title of the article). Last.fm has an excellent sense of community and a host of other features (I personally find the charts to be the coolest aspect, as I can post them in all my profiles). It's now one of the sites I visit on a regular basis.
Also, a lot of the recommendation service relies on users tagging tracks and what other music users listen to, however with unknown artists or the most popular that falls through (as said in the article, Johnny Cash != Megadeth). - NoahK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, thanks for that info Slumber. I love comments that are informative like yours.
- toddomatic, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It's a bit new and a bit buggy, but the idea is great. Hopefully they'll keep improving on it. I've enjoyed rediscovering music I already have on my hard drive.
- OficerMantimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great, cause I hate wasting time DLing songs I end up not listening to and this way I save HD space
- ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good music here...

...shameless self promotion, i know. - lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you should be trying out woxy.com and kexp.org to discover new music..
- penguinix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using last.fm for about a year now and I've found way more artists I like through it than pandora. What most people don't realsize at first is that you need to let the site get a good idea of the music you like so it can make useful recomendations. Then you need to learn how to use the recomendation system correctly and you can find tons of good artists. I was also surprised that the article didn't mention the nieghbors feature on last.fm because in my opinion that's the best feature and better for finding music than the recomedations feature.
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't forget my site: http://www.clinko.com
I did this years ago. - d1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a good article about a music recommendation service that was posted about a week ago... Check it here: http://www.invokemedia.com/musicip-you-are-hear-groundbreaking-predictive-music-technology.html
- 10secondtourism, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0Shameless self promotion I know but I've just launched a beta music recommendation site which uses a combination of 'similar artist' analysis and a peoples choice to recreate recommendations.

...books and movies to come - NoahK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use last.fm and Yahoo LaunchCAST. I like both equally well, but especially like the Yahoo! version. I do subscribe, so all the cons the article mentions are negated for me. :)
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2im not sure if Last.fm diserves the '9' it was given... ive come up with artists that are in the Pandora's archive but not in last.fm's so oftine that i stoped using it. and ive had 'stations' suddenly run out of music 10 minutes in. ill try it again after a few months to see if i like it more. but its no '9'. maybe its just that my taste in music it too obscure for it?
EDIT: (just tried it again, yep none of my favorite bands are there. always "artist not streamable" or "theres not enough content left to play this station" that being after 2-3 songs.) - Jayfo13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://mistermusicblog.blogspot.com/ ...this is one of my favorite sites to find great new indie music.
- lkratz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.jamendo.com/en/ : jamendo is over 1100 albums, free and legal !

http://digg.com/music/Download_One_Thousand_Free_Music_Albums_Now_ - Hearshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Last.fm. The community and profile features are very cool and you talk to people all over the world through tons of diverse forums or profile shoutboxes. Their database is quite beefy but i don't like their mediaplayer as much as Pandora. I also make use of Last.fm's audioscrobbler WinAMP plugin to track my own collection.
