- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41I'm confused....what exactly is this 'statement' we're supposed to make?
Aside from making some extra Cash for this one band, I'm afraid I'm not seeing the big picture.
I'm all in favor of supporting Podcasts....but I just don't see the point here. - juanotejano, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29***** this... podcasts should be free.
- gnomeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24TIRED OF BEING A TOOL OF THE "SYSTEM" AND THE "MAN" ??
BE A TOOL FOR A US INSTEAD!!!
For the payment of just one iTunes song, you too can be a tool for us! - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21It's about... you know... bum rushing.
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Bum Rush the Bury as Lame button instead.
- KicktheDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Nice idea, but isn't it kind of defeating the purpose? I think the meat-heads at the label will be able to figure out that (alot of) people only bought this track because of some kind of "iTunes-bomb" (can I copyright that term?). You're hoping to prove to the label that this new 'medium' works, and that they should embrace it with open arms, by perpetrating a scam?
One last thing before I go. To quote an excellent digg comment I saw a couple of days ago: "Okay! But only cause you told me to." - kikuchiyo11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Smells like advertising to me. Why should I help this one band? I think they just want tracks purchased, and are using these "let's show old media" quips to try and sell it.
Treat me like an intelligent customer and I will consider buying your stuff. Treat me like a dolt and I won't ever give you a dime. - whalefarmerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Yeah sure, "make a statement". More like "make my buddy some cash on Itunes"
- clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Hurray, national support DRM day
I would expect better from people who rea Digg - shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10this is freaking ridiculous. Support music by dropping iTunes. Use some open software, go out and see some bands you like; buy their music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have a better cause! On 2.20.07 everybody donate $1 to my paypal account at mofo@yoohoo.com. Stick it to the man! Make my poor ass rich as *****! My car payment is coming up bitches!
- shertzerj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@onymoushero: Not all countries use a DD/MM/YY format.
- wtsteamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@danimal0416: I agree
@everybody else that is complaining about this digg post:
Some people are only "assuming" certain things and not reading the entire focus and message of this mission. The band hasn't generated this drive... this was done independently by Chris Penn at the Financial Aid Podcast. His sincerity is true and he is also combining the efforts to help generate some extra money for college bound students.
Where is the harm in this? It helps in several ways. And, face it people... iTunes is still a way for independent artists to circumvent traditional marketing suits/big labels/RIAA that take their money. Yes, there are fees taken by Apple -- but show me where you can market your materials through third party sources and NOT pay at least some type of fee for the right to do so. iTunes is a "vehicle".
Don't use it if you don't want. But don't assume conspiracy just because somebody wanted to help a band and some college kids. And... nobody is "telling you what to buy." They're asking if you would like to help. - PapaKin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah I don't see the big picture here. All this is doing is benefiting one band.
- jlunski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Isn't this similar to the whole gas boycott email thing? "Let's all not buy gas on one day of the year", boy will that show 'The Man' that we mean business...
- DatDudeWiggs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Yeah, and make someone else rich. . .hmmm. . .no.
- wtsteamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@jonnyfatman
Okay... I've seen this kind of comment many times in this post. Do people really just get pleasure from commenting about something that would easily be dismissed as -- "Oh, this post came from the U.S." -- or "Oh, this post is from a country outside of the U.S."? If it is obvious that the person posting has used a date format not in your "standard" then accept that they have a standard different than yours. Why make derogatory comments toward it? It is very easy for me to discern the difference between different date formats. If the middle number is larger than an obvious month -- it is posted by a U.S. person. So what?
From my limited involvement on Digg I've found that most Digg comments are just people that like to complain and make negative comments about what is posted. If they truly read through -- or used some decent logic or [not so] common-sense, they wouldn't even have to put anything in. - Zaldor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't think you all understand... This isn't about PodShow, it's not about giving money to the artists (if you read the web site, the proceeds are actually going to a college fund), and it's not about giving money to iTunes/Apple... It's about showing the big record labels that podcasting can bring an artist to the top of the charts - without major label support. It's about showing the recording industry that podcasting can be effective marketing of a band... it's about showing the record label which dropped Black Lab what they lost out on. Power of podcasting!
- billyvnilly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41)they are using an artist that was dropped by two record labels (are they sucky? or TOO good?)
2)by using the above link, you'll be using 'financial aid podcast' as an iTunes affiliate. This means they get some money when you buy the track. The good news is they are donating that money to a college scholarship.
Its an ok idea, but I don't think it will have the ripples that they intend it to have. I'll make a prediction that all it will do is get record labels wanting to sign the band, but they'll have no f*cking clue about why this band is really on the charts. - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4heres a better summary of the efforts taken from the site:
"March 22nd you all have an assignment. An assignment to buy a specific track from iTunes both for a good cause AND to show the power and community of new media. Full details soon. You can be damn sure you’ll be hearing more about it from me on every channel I’ve got! I’m not going to allow people to write this one off and to forget about it. The inspiration is way to important to do that!" - C.C. Chapman, Accident Hash
personally i'd just like to do it to stick it to the boardroom suits and show them the old ways are dead. - brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4...would be better if we were to purchase the track at eMusic or allofmp3.com instead of herding the sheep, as it were.
- mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think this designed to turn people away from major label artists. The labels are doing a good enough job at doing this themselves. I think this is going to be more of an example people can point to about the power of new media, in all it's forms.
- Zaldor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For what purpose? As I said, to draw attention to the fact that podcasting CAN make a difference
- Zaldor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why would you care? I guess you wouldn't if you're happy with corporate record labels, formulized bands, bad music, and not supporting independant music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"iTunes bomb" cannot be copyrighted or Apple's lawyers will bum rush you....
- Oculus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I dug this just because there are some great comments in here.
- bugaloobob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ broomett
Just let these guys try to do this instead of raining on their parade. And if this effort is not as good as they hope, well, hell, they tried and will do better next time. Someone's got to take the lead. Good for them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What is funny is that when this FAILS miserably, it will prove just the OPPPOSITE of what you are trying to do. Becuae it will show that even when you make a conscious effort to focus all the purchasing power on ONE item, it still will not make any dent in sales.
- PleaseBeSerious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you are really serious you should buy two songs! That's...like...sticking it to the music industry twice!
Watch here and as soon as I get my band's song on iTunes....er I mean....find a worthy band I'll post it! Then you can bum rush the charts... AGAIN! - mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't about paying for a podcast. It's about purchasing a song in iTunes.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, might as well do it for my music or something...
- Beakerz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm confused as well - i don't really see the point in this. Except to send some kids to college which is a great thing btw. But besides that i dont see the reason...DRM support?
- mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comment from the band. This was most definitely not their idea, and they are donating half the sales to the scholarship fund.
http://www.pacificcoasthellway.com/podcasts/Paul%20Durham%20BRTC.mp3 - wtsteamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're not "TELLING" you to buy anything. They're asking if you would like to help. Big difference. Plus, I guess you missed the whole "help the college kids" part?
- tf2t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would be all for buying the music from the band's site with no DRM on the file. I think that would send more of a statement then buying DRM music from iTunes. Then again how could you track it in a way that the music industry would care.
- Chairmclee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about you guys actually read the ***** article and see that they are donating the money to college scholarships. Don't insult what you don't know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not only that...when the sales do not increase to any significant level even WITH this conscious effort, it will have just the OPPOSITE effect of what they re trying to accomplish.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah, and sending emails to your friends to come in here and digg me down is just as useless.
- PragmaticSense, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We should "Bum Rush" my PayPal account. Everybody send me a dollar and we'll show the man...
- tfarrenkopf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3How about we all just donate $0.99 to some designated charity and actually make a difference?
Or, you can show that you just want to "give it to the man" and guarantee that all profits will be donated to charity.
Otherwise, all we're really doing is giving a morning coffee to you and Apple. - whitesnow158, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0No doubt as a reaction to all the bad press he's been giving record labels, Universal/Interscope has relieved Trent Reznor of his contractual duties.

http://mp3away.com/letters-mp3-h/ - PureHeretic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i know right? seriously I'm against ***** like itunes
- Frozenpython, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Kinda sounds like a ploy to make some music sales if you ask me. How about just give out the song for free if you really want to "put it to the MAN"...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think "why?" sums up what i have to say pretty neatly.
- DaveLaMorte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is a cool way to hijack itunes for a day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Great marketing scam.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm an independent musician, and I don't see how "RRRARGH THE MAN" is going to help me any. This is just stupid. You don't need a spammy "let's get VIRAL" campaign to get people to stop supporting major label artists, the people have been doing that for 10 years already.
Artificially pushing one artist I've never heard of to the top of the iTunes charts isn't going to impress anyone. Your idea is about as stupid as anything the big labels have come up with in the past decade. - wang1011, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2...and somehow this makes it to the front page
- Zzone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would have no problem buying this song if it didn't suck.
- tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Or you can buy ***** that YOU like other then what somebody else TELLS you to buy.
