- OSX1337, on 02/10/2008, -0/+7Hype and buzz increases sales?
Someone notify the government of this startling new science! - derekbender, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Traditional marketing just can't compare to what the internet has brought to the plate. And anyway, the best form of advertisement is word-of-mouth.
- kaffein, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3No ***** really? :|
- kindrobot, on 02/10/2008, -0/+3Why digg her down? Oh, I know. It's the *indie contradiction* It goes something like...
Indie good, ***** corporations. But then if they self-promote, they're a "self promoter" and are therefore somehow bad or inauthentic. Catch-22 if there ever was one.
Stupid crap. Not only that, but she was fully ON topic and had something to add that provided personal testimony. Bad form. - keepinithamsta, on 02/10/2008, -1/+4Congratulations, ars technica, you have reported that press sells things!
- sprintmarathon, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2I'm so post-blog now... I get all my information on what's cool directly from the only people that really matters to me, myself and my friends. I love services like LastFM, mostly because it helps to avoid the marketing sleaze.
- antivibe, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2yup. thats where we live
- fkr3, on 02/10/2008, -2/+3While that might make a few people on teh interwebz feel good about themselves, the reality is a traditionally marketed successful album sells copies in the hundreds of thousands and millions. Long-term successful artists sell tens of millions of albums. People relying on the internet and your superpowers on the otherhand are lucky if they can measure their sales in thousands, and the only way to reach even that figure is to take a pro-piracy stance, give your album away, and hope that someone out there will donate to you.
- l2OI3, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1For the most part I foresee the majority of society going ad blind, both in television and online, while it still works on the older less savy generations, they won't be around forever.

- sparql, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2If this is in fact your music, it's pretty good. Are you influenced by Telefon Tel Aviv? I hear a lot of similarity in your electronics.
- sybarite, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2Who knew popular albums sell better??
- LightPhoenix, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2Please, everyone knows the internets are only for stealing music.
- xdevit, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Well no *****.. With MTV going to ***** (not that it was the only source. but used to have all kinds for music.) where else are we going to hear about a song. We get a tip from word of mouth and then either pirate it to check it out or find some youtube video of the song(s). If we like we buy. Why is this is news to the record companies ?
- tlcstudio, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1wow not bad, i knew that...
but how do you make it create buzz to get you signed, enough buzz that is - keyo, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=e11TtX0WW-w Melbourne Protest
XENU! XENU! XENU! - bdbr, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Um, sounds great, but try READING the article next time?
FTA:
"Although we found that user-generated content is a good predictor of music album sales, our analysis showed that traditional factors cannot be ignored," the researchers wrote. Music from major labels traditionally sold 12 times as much as that from independent labels, and the more mainstream media reviews an album got, the higher the sales. - BufferingStream, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1this just in:
pitchfork says water is wet. - sparql, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1cool I'll check it out, sara.
- PhilMoskowitz, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1So bring on the douchebag viral marketers! woooo!
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0So a good album generates more buzz. Did they really need to do a study to know that?
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0I love it when people are surprised the Internet works just like the real world. People like music other people recommend? No *****, really?
- letitbleed62, on 02/10/2008, -2/+2or not
- DameOnMain, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Yes, this is exactly right. Therefore, you should visit utahpolis.com and buy some music!
- Ragingcnu, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0FTA: "As to whether all this online chatter actually causes or merely predicts online sales, the researchers can't say. 'It is not possible to make such a conclusion based on this study,'"
Sweet, thanks for the article.... - andrewrs, on 02/13/2008, -0/+0and, that being said, if you like Muse, Queen, Franz Ferdinand, or the Cold War Kids check out my band: http://www.CarlottaTheBand.com
