Barack Obama Reveals His iPod Playlist
vh1.com — Presidential candidate says he listens to Jay-Z, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Yo-Yo Ma, and John Coltrane.
- 1374 diggs
- digg it
- FuryOfThor, on 06/27/2008, -9/+198I love all those guys, but as far as music goes, they're relatively safe bets and, conveniently, appeal to different groups. Jay-Z's an icon of modern hip-hop, Dylan is considered the voice of the baby boomer generation, Springsteen's a blue-collar hero, and Yo-Yo Ma and Coltrane are simply technical masters of their arts who appeal to classical musical purists (liberal elite, anyone?). Good, safe picks, Barack.
- zephyr42, on 06/28/2008, -1/+29Bob Dylan *was* the voice of the baby boomer generation before they ***** their ways up... now look at them. Do they look anything like Dylan was singing about?
- marx2k, on 06/28/2008, -11/+2Does Dylan?
- pilot3033, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12Not even that, but Dylan long ago rejected any sort of spokesman title. He's about art, not leadership.
- Laminarcissus, on 06/28/2008, -10/+76Yup -- I love Barack, I will be voting for Barack, but there is no way that Barack chose those tracks.
Much more likely that his campaign directors went to him and said "Hey, we're doing a PR piece on 'what's on your iPod' -- anything you specifically want included? And he said "I don't know, who has time to listen to music?"
Then a week later they came back to him with a list carefully crafted, like top 200 AOR radio, to have a few selections that strongly appeal to their most important demographic segments. He looked it over and said something like "This looks great, but who's Arctic Monkeys?" and they told him not to worry about it, they'd take them off the list.
And knowing Obama, he asked for a briefing sheet on every artist on the list, so he couldn't be caught short...- FeartheKnighted, on 06/28/2008, -1/+23Bingo. He's still a politician.
- paulisnotdead, on 06/28/2008, -8/+3Are you on something? I think you're putting far too much thought into this. The connections made by Furyofthor are thin at best. Not everything has to be planned out, this is just a man's playlist. it's what anyone would listen to, you're giving it too much depth. Stop over analyzing this *****, it doesn't even matter.
- PeppermintPig, on 06/28/2008, -2/+4I refuse to believe that Barack likes these artists!!! Nooooo. I can't vote for him now.
LOL - Laminarcissus, on 06/28/2008, -2/+9@paulisnotdead:
Hmm -- see the thing of it is that I run a marketing and PR agency, so I don't overthink this *****, I think of this ***** for a living. There's nothing wrong with it, and I prefaced it with my support of Obama, but this is just how it works.
You really think that a list being posted on a blog, and then on Digg, of the "Worst Movie Robots" at the same time a Pixar robot movie is coming out is a coincidence? It's been written for them. Do you think multiple stories about Ben Stiller being a total dick on set just happened, after a long career, to leak out right when he has a movie being released? I guarantee that no matter how funny you found those stories he and his friends found them funnier.
When you're reading Digg and reading major blogs you are, more often than not, in the safe hands of PR agencies, publicists, and cooperative publishers, all making sure that the truth is their truth and the "secrets" get released at just the right time.
But don't puddle up over this paulisdead, Barack isn't lying, he likely approved the list. But don't think that it's a little grassroots, "hey anybody got any ideas?" operation over there that's innocent to the ways of the world. - blarch, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1Then why would his favorite songs talk about the cold war and i ain't gonna work on maggie's farm no more. If he likes Bruce Springsteen enough to refer to him as "the Boss", i can't even take him seriously now. "Born to Run" must be every politician's favorite song.
- jawagas, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2@paulisnotdead, Barake seems like a wonderfully tasteful guy but the truth of politics is EVERYTHING is laid-out nice and orderly.
- Pillage, on 06/28/2008, -3/+35"Good, safe picks, Barack."
Exactly - Alegoo92, on 06/28/2008, -8/+3Not only do they appeal to everyone- but it's also at least partly *****.
Yo-Yo Ma is not a composer, he's a performer (cellist). Saying that you listen to a performer doesn't speak on your musical taste and shows that he's being gimmicky to try to appeal to classically-cultured people (I'm sure that applies to the other artists too).
Seriously, Barack, what genre of the 700 years of classical that Yo-Yo Ma covers do you like?
EDIT: good pick up mentioning Yo-Yo Ma and Coltrane, but I love classical and am not a 'liberal elitist'... more of a libertarian.- NJank, on 06/28/2008, -8/+3libertarians are liberal elitists.
- pensivewombat, on 06/28/2008, -2/+4Libertarians are conservative elitists.
- Laminarcissus, on 06/28/2008, -1/+6You may love classical music, but I don't get the impression you understand it very well. And I can't for the life of me understand where the whole liberal/elitist thing comes in.
But first off, a small point -- if Yo-Yo Ma is not a composer, what's Appalachia Waltz then?
And when much of classical music consists of a standard repertoire, then listening to, and comparing and contrasting individual performers takes on a very important role. Each performer has a very unique and specific interpretation of the repertoire for their instrument, and that's why you would own, say, a recording of "Haffner" by Serkin, Gould, and Horowitz.
Anyone can profess a preference for a specific artist independent of specific recordings, especially if you're educated on the differences between various artists, their tone, the interpretation, their technique, just like you might express a preference for a specific basketball player outside the context of a specific game. You just like his style.
A common joke in classical music circles is "[artist] could play the phone book and would buy a ticket."
It's not like pop bands, where you're listen for cool new tune, and of all the people on the list I'm really not sure why you're hyperventilating over that one. - Mononuclear, on 06/28/2008, -2/+1I love Bach especially the cello suites. I prefer the Rostroprovich recording to yo-yo mah's recording. I however enjoy many other Yo-yo mah recordings especially the tango stuff he did.
Someone who mentions specific artists or recordings generally knows much more about classical music than someone that just says they like Handel or Vivaldi. I enjoy the Israel Philharmonic recording of Brahms 4th symphony conducted by Zubin Mehta...
That said, I agree that this list is BS thought up by PR people to try and make him seem more like one of us and have him relate to different demographics. I doubt he came up with this list although it is possible he does enjoy or listen to some of these artists. - mattlohkamp, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Don't be dense - there are plenty of people who don't compose but play a distinct style of music, and saying you like to listen to them is a perfectly valid expression of your musical taste.
Besides, there are lots of people (myself included) who enjoy listening to him playing the cello without knowing or even caring what style of classical music he's covering. - Alegoo92, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1What I was saying is that Yo-Yo Ma plays such a wide repertoire of classical music (pre-Bach to Stravinsky), and doesn't reflect any one period of classical music.
I also wasn't aware of any compositions Ma had done, so I'm sorry for that. And the liberal elitist comment came from the comment I was replying to where he said that classical purists are liberal elitists....
...and Libertarians are not elitists at all. Ron Paul is a libertarian. - Derek941, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I am a centerist that LOVES LOVES LOVES yo-yo ma, and I LOVE miles davis!!!
I have met Obama before, and I wish I had the chance to talk to him about yo-yo ma and miles davis :P
I am thinking about voting for Obama, but I am not sure. I cant decide between him, or Ron Paul (i will write him in if I have to) - Laminarcissus, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2@Derek --
There's really no comparison between Paul and Obama. There are thoroughly fundamental differences between them in almost every respect.
I know Paul *sounds* like an invigorating voice for change, but unfortunately, just under the skin is someone who doesn't even follow his own philosophies. For example, despite being a passionate advocate for cutting spending in government he's introduced bills that could give billions away to the insurance lobby, while not offering a single method to cut spending to pay for it.
They're very different, and despite the urge we all have to follow any "throw the bums out!" message, I think if you look at Obama's actual platform you'll find something far more substantive than anything Ron Paul has ever proposed.
- LR2_, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12This is what he has listed under music on his facebook page:
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder,
Johann Sebastian Bach (cello suites), and The Fugees - JohnboiWaltune, on 06/28/2008, -10/+18Maybe that's actually the music he likes. Those artists all have tens of millions of fans. Don't be so cynical.
Just out of curiosity, what music do you think Barack Obama actually listens to? Cannibal Corpse and Megadeath?- LifesSweetDrug, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8What a president that would be!
Dave Mustaine FTW! - Gutterpunk, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Propagandhi
- HangerBaby, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1If a nominee listened to Propagandhi, he most likely wouldn't be a huge fan of presidents to begin with
- Derek941, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I listen to Miles Davis, Yo-yo Ma, and Marilyn Manson
- Aikidi, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1on the one hand i wish he had listed someone a little more obscure. if hes a jazz guy, list someone slightly less heard of then miles and coltrane. at least go with like, minkus or monk (really well heard of, but not the icons that miles davis and john coltrane are). all this looks like is he tried to be ethnic, educated, and safe for white voters all at the same time.
- LifesSweetDrug, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8What a president that would be!
- mistergoomba, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2If he puts Devourment on his playlist, he'll get my vote.
- TheMu, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah. It's not exactly "eclectic" as he describes it in the article.
- Astheria, on 06/28/2008, -4/+6Such safe and diverse choices you'd almost think his campaign came up with it for publicity. Hmm...
I like Obama, but some of this stuff is just annoyingly politically correct. Have some balls. - mojoface, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1He needs Rage Against the Machine to get my vote
- zephyr42, on 06/28/2008, -1/+29Bob Dylan *was* the voice of the baby boomer generation before they ***** their ways up... now look at them. Do they look anything like Dylan was singing about?
- jpnstory, on 06/27/2008, -8/+183But did he buy those tunes? RIAA subpoena coming?
- TunaFishGangsta, on 06/28/2008, -9/+8That was Bush, who received his Ipod from one of his daughters and that was loaded with unauthorized copies of music. If Bush was computer literate, he might have had more sense to download the songs legitimately - or not.
Likewise, it's much more likely that McCain's Ipod (if he had one) would have songs of questionable origin. After all, Bush and McCain share computer illiteracy. I'm sure McCain's ipod would be filled by someone else, perhaps the same person who comes up with Cindy McCain's recipes(google recipegate).- AtheismFTW, on 06/28/2008, -2/+1Wars are a series of opportunities.
- Dragular, on 06/28/2008, -5/+4Welp, I'm voting for McCain. ***** the RIAA.
- pyronik, on 06/28/2008, -2/+12I'm a McCain supporter, haha but .. he is old... his music is most likely going to be public domain by now
- Bob24, on 06/28/2008, -9/+1You're a McCain supporter?

Seriously, lighten up.- kuantan97, on 06/28/2008, -9/+12Seriously, learn how to read hyperbole.
- Synn, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2The hyperbole didn't need to be made in the first place. So it's a fluff piece...not every damn story in the world has to be serious.
- luet, on 06/28/2008, -5/+20jeez man what do you think MTV would interview barack about, they're a music channel damn it (or they are SUPPOSED to be :P). It's a nice little bit of information that lets voters see the future US president in a more human way instead of just the authority.
- pyronik, on 06/28/2008, -3/+1tip the vote! oh i mean rock the vote
- guybrush3000, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8MTV is a music channel?

Such an enlightening viewpoint. - Soave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3At least it's not the Huffington Post writing this article; it's VH1, so it's mildly relevant that they cover his musical tastes more than his politics. I'd hope that people don't turn to VH1 as a source of political information.
- Nickcompoop, on 06/28/2008, -5/+1Jay-Z? I'm sorry, you just lost my vote. Give me a candidate who listens to Daft Punk and I'll be happy.

- pilot3033, on 06/28/2008, -8/+17why because his iPod doesn't contain that much hip-hop? News flash, modern mainstream hip-hop is nothing like the power to the people and expressionist song writing that it was when it started. It's a manufactured mass produced product that is sold as a key to a life style. To claim one is "whiter" than another based on hip hop not only is an ignorant stereotype, but most hip hop today is listened to by white people, so the claim has no merit even if we agreed on that metric.

- voleur, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I dug this for "we're not sure what is on John McCain's MP3 player (if he has one)..." Ahem!
- chukd, on 06/28/2008, -9/+32Oh My God! WHO CARES! His musical taste has no bearing on if he is a fit person to lead the country or not. This is just another puff piece to make Obama seem like a great guy with nothing wrong. I am so sick of this freaking election! 24 hour news networks have drawn this thing out for over two years.
- skyz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3i don't know how much more awesome raised to amazing raised to fabulous raised to perfection i can take
- seattlephantom, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3I don't know about that, I probably wouldn't vote for him if there was any Country music on there.
- twishart, on 06/28/2008, -1/+12Gimme Shelter - awesome.
- itsthebrod, on 06/28/2008, -5/+7Sadly, this is what most people my age care about rather than the candidates' policies and plans for their presidency... I say for this election we have an American Idol-esque election for president; at least Obama is guaranteed to win there over Bush Jr.
- OC73, on 06/28/2008, -6/+45At least it's not a Huffington Post article.
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 06/28/2008, -2/+8Is it really any better?
- WiseWeasel, on 06/28/2008, -1/+8Great, instead we get VH1, that paragon of journalistic integrity...

Over-vetted, actually. Snore.- h0merg0mez, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2But vetted, to say the least.
- hoffey, on 06/28/2008, -11/+29How does this crap make it to the front page? It is garbage. Oh, and Obama supports the Patriot Act and Real ID Act. Now that is information that should be absorbed.
- bhavinp, on 06/28/2008, -5/+3This is Digg, not BBC.

- queenstarsha, on 06/29/2008, -2/+1as does john mccain. only mccain's support for warrentless wiretaps is whole-hearted, whereas obama said the recent (*****) compromise wasn't perfect.
- johndavidjack, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2He still voted, saying and doing are two different things; things all of you Obamatards can't differentiate.

- Seth024, on 06/28/2008, -0/+14"aware" of the threat they pose to the USA.
- TinternAbbot, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6This lack of knowledge would undoubtedly hurt him as president.
- Nickcompoop, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4McCain probably doesn't even know what electricity is.

- hellotyler, on 06/28/2008, -8/+3Jay Z raps about a lot of bad stuff though. He only has a few clean songs. I mean I like him, but he does rap about drugs and guns ect.

- katorga, on 06/28/2008, -2/+5Rap music "breaking down racial barriers"? Current Rap is derivative, corporate manufactured pap: no different than Brittany Spears or top40 country music in its total lack of creativity. But Coltrane and Parker...that is cool. I hope he has Dexter Gordon on there too.
- Nappuccino, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1"Current Rap is derivative, corporate manufactured pap: no different than Brittany Spears or top40 country music in

- navster15, on 06/28/2008, -1/+4I thought I'd never see the day that Jay Z is considered a politically correct music selection. Has no one actually listened to his lyrics?

- Terri84, on 06/28/2008, -4/+6Pandering at its highest form.
- judicar, on 06/28/2008, -3/+31Whatever, as much as I like Obama this playlist was probably put together by a focus group carefully weighing the demographic appeal of each artist.
- queenstarsha, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1if so, they failed. almost no female artists.
this strikes me as a cool guy's real taste.

- manningbowl135, on 06/28/2008, -13/+25This gets dugg 220 times? What's next? An article saying Obama's favorite color is blue dugg 1000 times? Obama lovers are getting pathetic.
- calenerd, on 06/28/2008, -5/+7highly agree with yo.
- TheWorm, on 06/28/2008, -5/+3I actually enjoy having a little personal information about my candidates. It's probably not going to swing my vote one way or the other, but it's nice to know they're human too.
- vault, on 06/28/2008, -1/+4And it's only getting worse.
- ssn697, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4you spoke too soon! Nearly 1000 diggs for this stupid *****.

- manningbowl135, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2So I don't think Obama's Ipod playlist is worth a 1,000 digg article and I hate Obama? Interesting logic.
- tacojohn48, on 06/28/2008, -4/+2I would be impressed if he had Baby Got Back on his ipod; I know it is on mine.
- CoMpUtErITGuY, on 06/28/2008, -13/+8He likes pussy music. Where's slayer, testament, megadeth, and Moonspell at?

- 4LeggedtriPod, on 06/28/2008, -7/+7Metal fans are the most close minded elitist music fans of all. They think anyone who doesn't listen to solely their tastes is automatically "gay" or a "pussy".
- Altanar, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1Nah, it just means that non-metal fans aren't brutal enough.
- Thrilltone, on 06/28/2008, -2/+5Brown Sugar, how come you dance so good?
