- pennyfan87, on 10/11/2007, -19/+235It's a sad day when the American government can shutdown legal companies in other countries.
RIP ALLofMP3. - le0pard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+59Aww, then this infamous video will forever go down in history:

This is MY free market. - raitchison, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44It didn't until the US pressured the Russian government to change the law.
- RobSaint, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38Well like it says, there's always http://www.mp3sparks.com/ instead. Looks pretty good. ;o)
- RoroCo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Sorry dude, but I have to bury any one that uses Wikipedia as a credible source for international law.
- AcePup, on 10/11/2007, -13/+36Rest of the article:
Before the shutdown AllOfMP3 had approximately 5 million users who were able to download songs and albums for a fraction of the price from authorized alternatives such as the iTunes Store. MP3s were sold for $0.20 per song, or less. AllOfMP3 has been a thorn in the side of the RIAA and the US government for years. But, it seems like president Putin has some good news to tell Bush today, a mere coincidence of course. It is not clear how effective the shutdown of AllOfMP3 will be. Most users will probably move to MP3sparks, a similar service with a similar setup, launched by the same company. The site is not illegal under Russian law. Last December the Danish ISP “Perspectiv” decided to block access to AllOfMP3 for all their users. In a response, The Pirate Bay, working together with the pro-piracy lobby Piratbyrån, decided to block all Perspektiv’s customers from accessing its site. Not long after that “Perspectiv” reconsidered their position, and their customers were allowed to access the online music store again. My gut feeling says that these “grey market” MP3 sites are just another Hydra. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25***** you UK!!
Happy fourth of July too! - sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19for once i agree with some one not trusting wikipedia. allofmp3 was in a gray area about it being legal or not. it will be up for the courts to decided not wikipedia.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I have no idea what you just said right there.
- shyguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Just use their alltunes program, gives you access to the music collection and your balance if you had any remaining. Refilling balance is still an issue though.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17It's not terrorism, period, brainiac. It's international trade relations.
- SPECOPS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15They aren't "copycats" they ARE the same as ALLOFMP3, they have the user base and passwords and balances of all the prior accounts.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28RTFA - It broke Russian law too.
- fishcough, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Naw, it's not dead. Just go to mp3sparks.com, and if you had an AllOfMP3 account, log in there under the same ID/password and your balance and download history are right there. Same company, same database - same site, basically, just with a different skin and URL.
- steven401, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I think you meant www.rslinks.org .
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Tell that to the millions of people who have never paid for a piece of software in their life.
- Beaver6813, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13The last time i checked the RIAA were willing to gain money by any means possible, if they can sue disabled and elderly people then why can't they accept money from teh russians???
- radio1mike, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Allofmp3.com, in my opinion, had the only viable payment/licensing option in 'retail'. The RIAA and companies (especially Sony) are always looking to (obviously) increase their revenue streams. But how do you do this when no one values the products as highly as you do? Why, license it so you need multiple copies of the tracks to play on your different machines. Have a stereo, portable mp3 player, CD Car player and a computer? Why, that'll be 4X the fees, please?
This adversely and inversely affects their product.
Allofmp3.com worked out well, because you actually paid for the data you downloaded. An average album at 128-bit encode would cost around $1.50 and a 256-bit encode would cost around $3.00. The most reasonable fees... I mean, really, don't most survey we ever see about how much the general public thinks or would pay for digital music is about 15 or 25 cents per track, anyways. - TopDog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I tried my login/password but it doesn't work. If I use the "forgot password" link it does send my login name and password to my email account but when I use those details it doesn't work!
- portableteejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Alltunes is still working though. My account info is still there and my balance is still there. Whats the problem?
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I wish I had a sudo government agency that would provide price protection for my business. That would be great. That way I could just produce a sub par product, backed by an out-of-date business model and still collect billions of dollars. I would just sit back, smoke a cigar, and count all of my profits, while at the same time complain about how I'm not making money anymore because my customers are thieves.
I still feel that the end of the RIAA would be the best thing to happen to music. Then people like myself, who feel that file sharing is actually good have an opportunity to introduce better business models. I really think I could provide a more profitable product at a cheaper production cost without charging for the music. - Bossman1086, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I love it. Mp3Sparks.com is by the same company, but isn't illegal in Russia because of the different licensing model they use.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If you are paranoid, just use the Forgot Password form, and it will email your login to you. They are legit!
- brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Actually, your AllOfMP3.com account is *ON* mp3sparks.com - your login name, password, balance - all work there!
(at least mine did) - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The Russian Government did decide, and the site no longer exists.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -21/+29It's not terrorism when Americans do it.
- RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yarr! It be the principle of the thing, me matey! A true pirate knows that paying any amount for yer booty makes you a weak, lily-livered sea-fairy!
- EllisAshbrook, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Please, enlighten us. How is it unfair? SHARING is one thing (i'm all for it) but PROFITEERING is wrong.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8thats not such a good point is it
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Azimuth1, you were already ***** us by purchasing our creative content on the black market, so ***** you too.
- geniusj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Wow. That reflects nicely on the majority of the digg community. How does a comment that's so obviously over the top and false end up +9? Terrorism? Have you guys lost your minds?
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You are sadly mistaken if you think this is the way to make a real living in the music business today. Last week I was at a speech by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, Island Pictures, etc. His advice to a young person: Do it on your own. You'll work harder, but you'll have more fun, make more money, and respect yourself at the end of the day.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6aJew, I'm curious, if you were selling a car for $15k and I took it from you, then offered to give you $3k when you threatened to have me arrested, would you say, "Hey, sounds fair"? No, I suspect you'd say screw me just before you called the cops.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10RTFA - It broke Russian law too.
- MrDo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I believe it was a Swedish ISP. Most / all Danish ISPs has infact blocked allofmp3.com in their DNS servers(which should give the average Digger a clue how to get around that).
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not quite. My logins don't work.
- Sprules04, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You should never trust Wikipedia on anything really. It's a great place to go and quickly inform yourself about whatever you want but trusting it as a reliable source is a no no.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You are clearly living a in a fantasy land.
On a side note, if these artists are such crap, what does it say about you that absolutely have to fill your computer with such pablum? - gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Please don't think about it.
Signed, RIAA and MPAA" - actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Because, in their head, they thought it was somehow legal.
- FibrillarorD, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Just the latest example of how perennially-unfair and intrusive the US-pushed WTO intellectual property laws are.
- themoose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Refill alltunes balance:
http://alltunes.com/login.shtml?tourl=%2fpayment%2frefill.shtml%3f
(FTA): Alternative AllOfMP3 owned by the same company:
http://www.mp3sparks.com/ - fuzzmello, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4just keep trying. it lets you through every now and then.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They make more from record sales with a major label behind them then they would by themselves. And that's why they want major labels behind them - *****% of heaps is a lot more than 100% of not much.
- Dougman82, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I just wish the RIAA would learn something from the success of these websites - that a GREAT DEAL of people are more likely to pay for reasonably-priced music rather than download it for free with Limewire or through a torrent.
- Mehster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5IIRC, you need to log in to allofmp3.com and hit the transfer account button on your account detail page. That's how I got mine transferred over. I certainly hope the late comers aren't just out of luck!
- PolkinhajIsGod, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Whether Allofmp3 was legal or not, artists with music on there definitely did not receive compensation for their work, so users were in essence, downloading illegally and, and paying someone to let them do it. While the U.S. ability to shut it down is another story, I am glad that it's gone.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Looks like our analogies crossed paths in the night.
