AllOfMP3 Shut Down by Russian Government For Good
torrentfreak.com — AllOfMp3, the popular online music store, has been shut down by the Russian government. Pressure from the United States, and a refusal to enter the World Trade Organisation (WTO) convinced the Kremlin to take the website down for good.

Before the shutdown AllOfMP3 had approximately 5 million users who were able to download songs and albums for a fraction of the price from authorized alternatives such as the iTunes Store. MP3s were sold for $0.20 per song, or less. AllOfMP3 has been a thorn in the side of the RIAA and the US government for years. But, it seems like president Putin has some good news to tell Bush today, a mere coincidence of course. It is not clear how effective the shutdown of AllOfMP3 will be. Most users will probably move to MP3sparks, a similar service with a similar setup, launched by the same company. The site is not illegal under Russian law. Last December the Danish ISP “Perspectiv” decided to block access to AllOfMP3 for all their users. In a response, The Pirate Bay, working together with the pro-piracy lobby Piratbyrån, decided to block all Perspektiv’s customers from accessing its site. Not long after that “Perspectiv” reconsidered their position, and their customers were allowed to access the online music store again. My gut feeling says that these “grey market” MP3 sites are just another Hydra.- MrDo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I believe it was a Swedish ISP. Most / all Danish ISPs has infact blocked allofmp3.com in their DNS servers(which should give the average Digger a clue how to get around that).
- brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Actually, your AllOfMP3.com account is *ON* mp3sparks.com - your login name, password, balance - all work there!
(at least mine did) - EztliNahua, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oh no, AllOfMP3.COM has been shut down! Good thing there is AllOfMP3.RU... they complied with the US' wish to the letter...
- pennyfan87, on 10/11/2007, -19/+235It's a sad day when the American government can shutdown legal companies in other countries.
RIP ALLofMP3.- jstohler, on 10/11/2007, -44/+13I loved AllofMP3, but they were never legal, even under Russian laws.

- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19for once i agree with some one not trusting wikipedia. allofmp3 was in a gray area about it being legal or not. it will be up for the courts to decided not wikipedia.
- jstohler, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3So you'll never trust Wikipedia again? Or only when you don't like its results?
- Sprules04, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You should never trust Wikipedia on anything really. It's a great place to go and quickly inform yourself about whatever you want but trusting it as a reliable source is a no no.

I reside in the US and I certainly wouldn't want a foreign country forcing a domestic company/website to shutdown. Granted, I bet there are certainly similar influences regarding energy companies but those generally wouldn't be in the public eye due to the nature of the goods.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3They didn't force ***** on Russia. Russia did it because they want to be a part of the WTO. Here are a few more random letters to go with that: RTFA.

- Mehster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5IIRC, you need to log in to allofmp3.com and hit the transfer account button on your account detail page. That's how I got mine transferred over. I certainly hope the late comers aren't just out of luck!
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I just tried the new site, it worked automatically.
- dextermanas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Not working for me :(
Does anyone know of any service similar to AllOfMP3? I don't mind paying higher or as much as iTunes, but what I want is the ability to download in any format I choose, including lossless.

1. Create clone of allofmp3.com
2. Tell Digg users their allofmp3.com usernames & passwords are valid
3. Wait for hundreds of naive Digg users to sign into your site with their usernames & passwords
4. Use harvested usernames & passwords to empty user accounts
5. Profit!!!
OK, maybe I'm paranoid, but sometimes it pays to be paranoid. I'd appreciate an official announcement of some sort before I hand over my credit card details.- avihappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If you are paranoid, just use the Forgot Password form, and it will email your login to you. They are legit!
- scratched, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My login info from AllOfMp3 worked on their new site with no problem and it transferred my balance and account info over too.
And to make it more secure, I had to go to Visa's authentication website when refilling my balance to approve the transaction.
You're just being overly paranoid. If you're waiting for a official announcement from AllOfMp3 you're wasting your time since it already officially works.- terrya64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1mp3 sparks isn't new! I learned about it on allofmp3.com a few months ago. They were advertising their new beta site. There was no transferring of information needed, everything allofmp3 had mp3sparks already had. - Bossman1086, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I love it. Mp3Sparks.com is by the same company, but isn't illegal in Russia because of the different licensing model they use.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2From MP3Sparks's site:
"The availability over the Internet of the Mp3Sparks.com materials is authorized by the license # LS-3М-05-03 of the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society (ROMS) and license # 006/3M-05 of the Rightholders Federation for Collective Copyright Management of Works Used Interactively (FAIR). Under the licenses' terms, Regiontorg pays license fees for all materials downloaded from the site subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights". All these materials are solely for personal use. Any further distribution, resale or broadcasting are prohibited."
This reads the same to me as AOM's license, so what's different? They also claimed to be paying royalties through ROMS.

- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not quite. My logins don't work.
- PolkinhajIsGod, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Whether Allofmp3 was legal or not, artists with music on there definitely did not receive compensation for their work, so users were in essence, downloading illegally and, and paying someone to let them do it. While the U.S. ability to shut it down is another story, I am glad that it's gone.
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2really? Cause you know exactly how all the backend transactions work and you have records proving that they are not getting paid? No? Didn't think so.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They were at least supposed to receive compensation if they registered with ROMS, but RIAA didn't want to, so no money for the artists either.
Are you sure that is correct info? - thewump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think you are incorrect. They DID get paid - just based on Russian copyrighting requirements.. which allow much lower payouts.
The issues with these sites is less about whether they are legal in Russia, it's whether or not they should permit the illegal export of mp3s to outside of Russia
- sadilak, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Someone mentioned that using allofmp3 denies artists of their money!!. what crap is that. Most of the artists are created by corporates!. They are already paid. I dont see any reason why a song should cost more than 4 cents. I truly dont care as to whether these fake artists make money or burn in hell. Ultimately, the system will fail and music companies are gonna shut down shop.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You are clearly living a in a fantasy land.
On a side note, if these artists are such crap, what does it say about you that absolutely have to fill your computer with such pablum?
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You are clearly living a in a fantasy land.
- TommyBoy919, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Eh, iTunes made it easy to actually buy music cheaply, so whatever. The randomness of the audio quality on the P2P services makes it too much of a hassle. I guess I'm just lazy. I still do use BitTorrent and LimeWire, but only if a song I want isn't on iTunes or if its a song from some crappy soundtrack where they won't sell individual tunes (because they want you to buy the album's 12 terrible tracks to get the 1 or 2 you actually like.)
- M2Ys4U, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There's no DRM on the P2P tracks...
- radio1mike, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Allofmp3.com, in my opinion, had the only viable payment/licensing option in 'retail'. The RIAA and companies (especially Sony) are always looking to (obviously) increase their revenue streams. But how do you do this when no one values the products as highly as you do? Why, license it so you need multiple copies of the tracks to play on your different machines. Have a stereo, portable mp3 player, CD Car player and a computer? Why, that'll be 4X the fees, please?
This adversely and inversely affects their product.
Allofmp3.com worked out well, because you actually paid for the data you downloaded. An average album at 128-bit encode would cost around $1.50 and a 256-bit encode would cost around $3.00. The most reasonable fees... I mean, really, don't most survey we ever see about how much the general public thinks or would pay for digital music is about 15 or 25 cents per track, anyways.- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6I'm sure Sony realises they would sell more of everything if they dropped the price by 80%. But the cost of production kind of stops them. Music and films have costs too you know, distribution is far from the only cost of an album.
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I wish I had a sudo government agency that would provide price protection for my business. That would be great. That way I could just produce a sub par product, backed by an out-of-date business model and still collect billions of dollars. I would just sit back, smoke a cigar, and count all of my profits, while at the same time complain about how I'm not making money anymore because my customers are thieves.
I still feel that the end of the RIAA would be the best thing to happen to music. Then people like myself, who feel that file sharing is actually good have an opportunity to introduce better business models. I really think I could provide a more profitable product at a cheaper production cost without charging for the music.- YourTechSupport, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I wish I had a SUDO government agency.

And what happened to the constitution's "limited time" clause on copyright protection. Disney made his name on using public domain stories. Nothing in the last 80 years has made it into the public domain from Disney.
Music is the same. They are granted monopoly by government guns. No different than asking their godfather to protect them with an offer that can't be refused.

- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Well, I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'm glad it shut down. Why? Well, this site really hurt the songwriters (not the millionaire artists) by not paying them proper royalties. Songwriters don't make as much money as you would like to think and every loss counts. I understand many people are frustrated about the price of music, but everything has a price and if you want to legally and ethically listen to the music you can either pay the price the companies are asking or you can listen to something else.
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3really? Cause you know exactly how all the backend transactions work and you have records proving that they are not getting paid? No? Didn't think so. - Dougman82, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I just wish the RIAA would learn something from the success of these websites - that a GREAT DEAL of people are more likely to pay for reasonably-priced music rather than download it for free with Limewire or through a torrent.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Since when is 99¢ for a song you can listen to the rest of your life without it degrading over time considered excessive?
- Dougman82, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I don't purchase music by the song - I purchase by the album. If they're going to charge me $12-$15 for an album, they damn well better make sure it is in CD form without their ***** DRM.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If you're referring to iTunes, I'd make a long-tail bet with you, that you could not play a song purchased in iTunes today 8 years from now. And yes, ripping to a more "long term" format violates your license agreement with Apple, and this frankly proves the OP's point.
- rocket777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yup, penny wise, pound foolish. The could sell at this price, with huge volume and make more than they do now. But they're scared because they've had a lock on things by limiting access through ownership of politicians willing to let them keep a monopoly for basically forever, when the original bargain for creating the concept of informational property was to promote variety that would get into the public domain once they'd made their profits. But they wanted more, and so bought more politicians.
There's nothing in natural law that creates IP, it's a man made gun enforced system. It's not peaceful commerce. They need to go the way of buggy whips.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Since when is 99¢ for a song you can listen to the rest of your life without it degrading over time considered excessive?

- GetTheGirl, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0time for a replacement to allofmp3, music in the 'clouds'
http://seeqpod.com - ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6In other news. Mp3sparks.com and Mp3sugar.com are completely untouched, and are welcoming AllofMp3.com customers.
I think it is incredible that a music download site has done something that no terrorist organization has ever done. Bring two countries (the U.S. and Russia) and the WTO to its knees. Hey! al-Qaeda you see this? Want'a shut down the government? Stop bombing buildings, and open a cheap Mp3 music site. - JAK2112, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2good thing mp3stor.com is still working. Theres no going back to itunes after buying full albums for under $1.50, though with this news, i dont see it lasting for much longer :(

- terrya64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1mp3sparks is the same company as allofmp3, it was just under a different name.

- excalpius, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Note that the cost of manufacturing and distributing a CD (including producing the content found on it) is FAR less than the cost of manufacturing and distributing a DVD (including producing the content found on it), so why again are CDs $20 or more and DVDs $10 or less? Think about it.
- scratched, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Because you'll get more use out of a CD than a DVD.
Think about it.
You can listen to an album more times that you'll watch a movie. - gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Please don't think about it.
Signed, RIAA and MPAA" - ultimate_ed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe because a CD is a stand alone product, while a DVD is just an additional revenue stream for a product that has already recovered it's basic expenses by a theatrical run?

- IslandDog, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Good. Piracy is illegal and the site should be shut down.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4I cant believe the number of people in this thread making excuses for illegally downloading music.
Of course it was illegal and i have no sympathy if you're going to try and 'justify' it with some crap excuse.
I would have more respect for you guys if you just came out and said 'i wanted a cheap illegal way to download loads of music', rather than try to wriggle out of it.
Pathetic.- ZPWeeks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1They already have a FREE illegal way, if they want it. Much cheaper and easier than ALLOFMP3, as well. And they admit it.
AllOfMP3 was a legal grey market - both sides are partially right, and the person who lost because of it was the music label. Some people have little sympathy for the label whining and bitching about their lost profits.
That said, I pay good money for my music. Most of the time, I get it through legal avenues. The only time that I do otherwise is if the "free market" is ripping the customer off and doesn't provide product at a fair value. Then it's stealing on both ends, the customer and the person trying to sell it for outrageous prices. If you actually understand how free markets are supposed to work, crap like DRM and corrupt government intervention in royalties and bad laws create artificial price floors to extort unreasonable profits from their own customers.
Once the labels are willing to suck it up and work on actually innovating and supporting good music like they're supposed to, we will once again see a fruitful, legal economic exchange between music lovers and those who make and produce that music. Until then, the labels are just bringing it down on themselves.
I will not say "i wanted a cheap illegal way to download loads of music." Because I didn't. I wanted to pay a reasonable price to receive a reasonable product in return, but there was none. So I went for the next best thing for my own benefit, since that's what the music labels on the other side are already doing.- coldfusion1970, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Then the standard reply is "if something is not value for money, then dont buy it".
I want a PS3, but at the moment i cant justify it, but i'm not going to steal it and then try to justify with poor arguments.

- rocket777, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You speak of law breaking as though it's some sort of horrible thing. You need to get some perspective. Killing thousands by lawbreaking politicians gets a pass, and they who never go to jail, yet are the ones making up all these laws. Read the constitution, it's a law too, and it only provides copyrights for limited times. 80 years or so ain't my idea of limited.
Anything that depends on the government for its survival deserves what it gets.
There is no difference between the government and the mafia. The governments simply is bigger crooks. So, don't get so high and mighty about the virtue of these questionable laws. They weren't given to man by the gods, some stupid politician who took a bribe voted for these laws and never even read them.
You can't have property that is not tangible. Hell, if hum their song I'm probably making an illegal (low fidelity) copy. Take me away in chains.- coldfusion1970, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So because stealing isnt as bad a crime as killing someone, you're saying that its not breaking the law? Or that we should ignore it?
I wouldnt want to live in any country that you're in charge of.

- PrettyBoyFloyd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Probably not a coincidence that George W. Bush met with Vladmir Putin yesterday and today. The major media indicated that most of what they discussed was the proposed missile defense system Bush wants to base in eastern Europe, but I'd wager they spent a little bit of time discussing AllofMP3.com.
- limeyfather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0mp3real.ru is doing some weird thing too.... instead of downloading the music, an imbedded player (quicktime for me) just loads the song, and you can only listen. wtf, russia? Being russian myself, I find this very ***** strange.
- jasonprussell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Silly kids. AllOfMP3.com has not been shut down, in fact, I'm using them at this very moment. We've heard this a hundred times before, it still hasn't happened. Just because you can't get to the web site, doesn't mean the site was shut down. Servers go down all the time.
- Kyderdog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So now we know what bush is really doing in Russia.
