- borez, on 05/01/2009, -1/+24It's a guide to a few festivals around the World, however it is not a guide to the Worlds best Music Festivals. By far.
But there again, I wouldn't expect CNN to know what a good festival was even if it sprung up and shot them in the arse with a bow and arrow. - dofkex, on 05/01/2009, -1/+14No Wacken either... crappy list
- booklikeabook, on 05/01/2009, -1/+11No SXSW - - - - > fail

- CarStan, on 05/01/2009, -0/+7seems more like a list of 'the biggest mainstream, overpriced festivals' than the best.
>400$ for headliners The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Weezer? really?
(i like them, but i've already seen them at the festivals i got to.. in 3th or 4th slot, as a warm up, or on the alternative stage) - sHockz, on 05/01/2009, -3/+10buried.
They forgot the best one...Austin Tx is the live music capital of the world and has the annual Austin City Limits music festival. - thesmrt12004, on 05/01/2009, -1/+8SUMMERFEST?????
- ucbmckee, on 05/01/2009, -5/+10Austin titles itself the live music capital of the world. Austin is fooling itself. There are more live concerts on any given night here in London than occur during an entire week in Austin, if not longer. And we're not talking your uncle's bluegrass band from out San Antonio way, either. Austin = overrated. Being the best city in Texas is like being the cutest chick in a hospital's burn ward.
- aleksandar, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5Dugg for EXIT:
http://eng.exitfest.org/ - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+4buried for being a ***** list.
- ExclusiveKnow, on 05/01/2009, -1/+5No New Orleans Jazz Fest ? Bon Jovi, Kings of Leon, Dave Mathews Band, Tony Bennet, James Taylor, Dr. John, Neville Brothers, Erykah Badu, Better Than Ezra. . . And I think this was a down year
- robohoe, on 05/01/2009, -1/+5All of these are metal festivals, not everyone listens to metal
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -1/+5The best music festival cannot contain Jay-z.
- GanjaGirl, on 05/01/2009, -0/+4Bonnaroo, here I come!!!
- jocampbe, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3NOLA Jazz Fest is the best!
- BloodnThunder, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Ozzfest is DEAD.
- bnl771, on 05/01/2009, -2/+5Yeah, many Austinites do have a complex. But it's because of what you hinted at... We're in the middle of Texas. A state many that love Austin don't really care too much for. Another reason- a big part of the population is made up of UT students that never left... they probably haven't experienced other cities. Coming from DC myself, I enjoyed the laid back attitude (sometimes... not when I'm ordering lunch or driving...) and mild winters. Haha. And of course I love the music. It's leaps and bounds better than DC and many other cities in the US I've been too. I guess we can be most proud of our size to live music ratio. For a small city, we do get a ***** of great music coming through constantly.
- bdxphoenix, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Additionally, Summerfest typically sees between 750,000 to 1,000,000 guests come and go. Much more than the others in the list.
- GoingPostal, on 05/01/2009, -0/+311 days of bands, beer and brats. I go there every year. You gotta love Milwaukee.
- bnl771, on 05/01/2009, -1/+4I love Austin. I love ACL fest. But I don't think it belongs a list of the best. While the music is very good, sometimes great, I feel like it's the most uncomfortable festival going experience. The heat, the crowds, the dust (hopefully fixed once they finish remodeling Zilker)... I have to tell my friends coming to be prepared to be miserable but it's also worth it in a strange way. Plus this years lineup is 'meh'.
All Points West - THAT'S my top festival this year. Have you seen the lineup??? - crysiss, on 05/01/2009, -1/+4I was expecting that Wacken Open Air wouldn't be on the list.
- CarStan, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3Agreed. The Graspop lineup is slick this year:
Friday : Mötley Crüe, Soulfly, DragonForce, Heaven and Hell, Papa Roach, Dream Theater, Blind Guardian, W.A.S.P.,
Saturday : Slipknot, Korn, Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed Lacuna Coil, Journey(!!!!!) , Monster Magnet, Duff Mc Kagan's Loaded, No Use for a Name,
Sunday : Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Trivium, Anthrax, August Burns Red, Nightwish, Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Sick of It All, Suicidal Tendencies, All That Remain
There's something for virtually everyone who loves heavy rock - booklikeabook, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2It sure felt like a festival...minus feeling like herded cattle.
- bnl771, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3Seeing 50 bands at 20 different venues in 4 days does, though.
- borez, on 05/01/2009, -2/+4An industry expo does not a festival make.
- MrDoug, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3No SXSW????
- smacksaw, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2As someone that used to collect "rare live performances" before the advent of the interwebs, I have to say that Glastonbury and Roskilde were awfully popular.
There's something to it...musicians get amped up to play those. Never been to either, but I'm sure I would not be disappointed. Exit seems pretty cool and you can't beat "free" with Roque al Park. - SweetAmmonia66, on 05/02/2009, -0/+2What about Sziget? They have an awesome line-up every year.
Here's what they have so far and it's three months away:
http://www.sziget.hu/festival_english/programs - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -1/+3It would depend on what was written on the arrow. They are pretty good investigators like that.
- pihl, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Roskilde, it truly is one of the better festivals.
- j0hnk377y, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2FloydFest - Floyd Virginia
- stickyman, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Exit is absolutely crazy...
4 days and nights of total hedonism. - elizabethbrady, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2I wanted to go to All Points West last year, but it was too expensive. Afterwards, I heard the security was sooo tight - they even limited the # of drinks you could buy. did anyone go?
- utdfan7, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Unbelievable, for those who don't know here is a list of some of the big concerts at Summerfest this year:
Rise Against, Bon Jovi, The Offspring, Dropkick Murphy's, Kieth Urban, Talib Kweli, Barenaked Ladies, Lupe Fiasco, Bob Dylan w/ Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Matisyahu, Guster, Kenny Chesney, Gavin DeGraw, Shinedown, The Fray w/ Jack's Mannequin, Flogging Molly, Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Kevin Rudolph.
Add the fact that you could get to all ten days of the festival for under $100. There is no reason this should not be on the list. - fsufanizzle, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Looking forward to my 2nd straight trip to Bonnaroo. It'll be tough to beat the fun had and lineup from Miami in March at Ultra Music Festival.
- WiretapStudios, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2I don't know about Coachella, but on the East Coast; Bonnaroo, Virgin Fest, WMC, etc...they are cool and have some great acts...but I feel like I get more value seeing the acts individually. I've had fun at Bonnaroo, but it's just too much, too many people, too much money spent, and too much time running between stages because all your favorites are always on at the same time.
- seventhc, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2The. Wanee festival is really good too, I was there last year and it was great.
http://www.waneefestival.com/ - borez, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Fair enough.
- BootsElectric, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2You forgot
Getting wasted on free booze given everywhere and street slutting around town: priceless.
SXSW is so much more than an industry expo. I'd say very little of it has to do with the selling of actual "music industry" bands. I saw 65 bands for free over 4 days this last March, last time I checked the entire city doesn't become a giant venue for everything music for any of those other festivals. Neither do they have "protest" festivals that rival aspects of the main event in many cases. - slvrbullet87, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Alright, you convinced me, i am going
- TheNik, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2Bonnaroo is supreme. I live less than 45 minutes away from Manchester so it's much closer than any other festival for me, plus the lineup is pretty good this year if you like a very odd mixture of music. Juice Springstein, Phish, Snoop Dogg, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and Elvis Costello... Yeah, weird.
- zaii7, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1God i miss WMC. even though i did get stung by a jellyfish this year
- itsbob, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Because there is no Ozzfest anymore
- Salstar, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1The BIG DAY OUT in Sydney, Australia is a X and Y Gen Heaven. Its a fantastic event - very well organised with a great line-up of artists. Tickets can be expensive but worth it! Here is a link:

Also, if you have a love of country music, you can't go passed the famous Tamworth Country Music Festival which is held in January (for 2 weeks) every year. The Tamworth Country Music Festival is ranked in the top 10 best country music festivals in the world. It is an extremely popular event where people fly in from all over the world. It mostly features well-known country musicians from Australia (sometimes with guests from overseas). You need to book early - REAL early (like 12 months ahead) - for accommodation unless you want to commute from nearby country towns, like Armidale or the gorgeous coastal town of Port Macquarie. Tamworth is a great little town in northern NSW in a fantastic part of the world. Here is the official link:

My favourites are the Music Festivals held (on a regular basis) "On-the-Green" in the wine growing districts of The Hunter Valley just 2 hours north of Sydney. They have top artists from all over the world. Went there recently to see Simply Red and in the past have seen Santana and (my favourite) Jackson Browne. If you want something "special", the top ranking tickets include a gourmet four course meal, as much of the top Australian wines you can drink (from the Bimbadgen Winery Estate OR from whatever Winery the Day On the Green is being held) and private seats (with first class view of the stage) being served wine and appetisers for the rest of the night. Its the way to go but the cost can be a bit prohibitive at AUS $350 ph! You can get good A Grade seats for around $160.00 ph. For those people who want to drink, buses are organised to take you to and from your Hotel which is advisable considering the heavy fines imposed on drink drivers - in Australia, Random Drink Driving Tests are conducted regularly and, especially, outside big music festivals where police know a lot of people will be drinking. - mandraque, on 05/01/2009, -1/+2no ULTRA, buried.
- TheRascalKing, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1Wait, Journey? As in Don't stop believin'??
I guess they are pretty... brutal? Is that the right word? - realchemist, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Wannee FTW
- Eupatorus, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Yes. Obviously none of these posters have been to Bonnaroo. It is the king of music festivals.
- BSeffrood, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1JJO Band Camp?
http://www.jjobandcamp.com/VI/ - malaak, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Agreed - Summerfest should be on the list otherwsie the list is a p.o.s.
