- Shootfast, on 06/03/2008, -0/+20I came in here expecting Theremins....
I was disappointed :( - chkdg8, on 06/03/2008, -1/+11Sea Organ FTW!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nISG7iBk-A
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5They left out pavement.
I can't remember exactly where it is, but somewhere around where I live they cut grooves into the pavement that creates tones when you drive over them. If the tones sound like music, you're going the right speed. If the tones sound distorted, you're probably going too fast. I'm just waiting for someone to cut a full concerto into the pavement... - jggube, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4The "Guitar Solos with Bite" entry simply looks spectacular. Probably the most ornate/creative guitar I've seen.
- doctechnical, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4Leave Scientology out of this!
;) - BlockedUser, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3If the lady in the water could play the Jaws theme, that would be awesome... du nuh. du nuh. du nu nu nu etc.
- alucinante, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3no hurdy gurdy?
- cvindustries, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3My favorite theremin youtube clip: (gnarls barkley's crazy)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW0B1sipLBI - MiddleOfNowhere, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4Yep. Most of these are simply oddly designed guitars and pianos ...
That's like dressing up cars and calling them "fascinating spaceships".
For really unusual instruments, how about ...
#1
The Hang (which has been featured on digg a few times before):

#2
Hans Reichel's Daxophone (be sure to listen to the MP3 samples - no computes involved!)

The Chapman Stick:

(More interesting instruments are at http://www.oddmusic.com/ )

And finally, how about the world of virtual instruments, aka soft synths, some of which can even be played from the browser:
- Dub Selector: http://www.channel4.com/sport/microsites/S/summers ...
- Infinite Wheel: http://www.infinitewheel.com/
- The Whitney Music Box: http://www.coverpop.com/whitney/ (more a demo than an instrument, but still fascinating)
Just saying: There are far more interesting things out there than a double-neck guitar - Yes + Co. had these forty years ago ... :) - NotOptium, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3The Ondes Martenot is better than a theremin because it's the same sound and a very similar style of playing, but you can play notes MUCH more quickly than you ever could on a theremin, making it a viable instrument and not just a cool little box used primarily for some added background effects. The problem is getting your hands on one takes years and tens of thousands of dollars... (yes, I looked into it once and was really disappointed).
- Jennefah, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Whereabouts is that? I'd love it if they'd do something like that around here. I wonder if buildings could be constructed in such a way that the wind makes sounds/chords as the wind breezes through them? (tuned to the same key as the pavement concerto, of course)
*annoyed at the current non-musical priorities of building/road planners* - AUniquePerson, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Jennefah, We are too busy spending money on wars... Sad, but true. =(
- wynja, on 06/03/2008, -2/+4Buried for only exposing the western world's weird instruments. Where's the didgeridoo for Christ's sake?
- rogueyak, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2The perspective on the first picture makes me cry.
- glinsvad, on 06/03/2008, -1/+3The water (h)armonica should definitely have been on the list too
http://digg.com/arts_culture/Banned_Musical_Instru ... - SHUUTOBI, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Want to see some actual weird instruments and not just some weird "looking" ones?
Go here:
http://www.oddmusic.com/ - TheKingInYellow, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2what's so unusual about pianos and guitars?
- upick, on 06/03/2008, -1/+3These are very weird instruments. They are mainly guitars and pianos / organs but they look strange maybe the title is not suitable as the instruments are not unusual but rather the what they look?
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Everybody has played THAT.
- jawagas, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Highly inappropriate comment... I'll e-mail you some picture later tonight.
- bag2p, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2where's the meat flute?
- xero69, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Skin flute? Rusty trombone?
- metaliq, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Yes. Your other post didn't make much sense.
Thank you. - metaliq, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1huh?
- sillymeganlee, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Often times when I'm under water I'm all "Hey, know what would be sweet? Playing the piano RIGHT NOW."
It's better down where it's wetter, you know. - PingoLingo, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1I think I saw one on Austin City Limits years ago... there was a short write about it in the paper, about how the musician had to keep a close eye out for lead poisoning... it was made of glass or something.
... or I could be totally wrong. - tcpip4lyfe, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2This is really all you need to know:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4hZt--0Yno - Ramble, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Post your own then.
- MonkCanatella, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1You're awesome.
- zonk3r, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1There was this one time in band camp a girl I knew played an unusual instrument... Well just in an unusual way.
- Durinthal, on 06/03/2008, -0/+11. I wouldn't call it impossible, just impractical.
2. That was made by Animusic ( http://www.animusic.com/ ), and there's more cool stuff along the same lines if you look around. - americaskate, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1I was expecting unusual instruments.
Most were regular instruments that look unusual. - burjzyntski, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Entering Town:
Beethoven's Fur Elise is playing for everyone's driving pleasure. - greenmason, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1No mention of Tesla Coils!???
http://oddstrument.com/2008/05/20/arcattacks-music ... - swrostmore, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Play the sound samples from the sea harp and the sea organ simultaneously - you will ***** brix
- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1lol fail
- acroyear2, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1For the average person, Max/MSP should be listed:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr04/images/autec ... - RufusMcCoot, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1"everything is bigger in texas, why not the ineternet bill" -my girlfriend
edit...that's not the right story.....i still love firefox tabs, even if i can't keep them straight....jesus, im burying my own comment - mraustin1337, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I think someone should have mentioned the spoonbox. Made by one of the members of the band "The Books"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB6Yh4a6XW0 - Shootfast, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1If your driving on the pavement i think it's more the pedestrians that are going to get cut into :S
- beermaker, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1bah!!!! it´s clear that you don't know nothing about the CONTINENT of AMERICA, you must look down to Argentina, search for "Les Luthiers" they make really rare instruments!!!!
- MaryCait, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Ahhh I want everything!!!
- doctechnical, on 06/03/2008, -1/+1The lack of the Optigan is also disappointing.
http://www.optigan.com/ - MusicalFeedback, on 06/03/2008, -1/+1Wow. That Sea Organ was truly amazing! I wish I could visit it one day. Maybe I will.
