empireonline.com — How does the teaser compare to the comic book?

- Darkpyr0, on 07/20/2008, -2/+37awesome...I'm gonna go read watchmen again
- ikrit2006, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1According to the slideshow, wouldn't that spoil the movie?
- Final, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1AS someone who has never been exposed to Watchmen, I'll say this. It looks like Batman is going to be fighting with the silver surfer in some sort of Isaac Asimov world. I can't remember all of the trailer, but I do remember that.
It's sad when good movies are tainted only for the fact other lesser movies did something first =(
I hope this is good though. - JettaMan, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Aww, they didn't modulate Rorschach's voice. I always thought it should be synthesized and robotic.
- Raz4Life, on 07/20/2008, -21/+4I loved Watchmen, and now I can't wait for this movie. If you want the song from the trailer, it's $.89 at Amazon MP3 http://bit.ly/24MEq6
- Darkpyr0, on 07/21/2008, -11/+2lame, but decent way:

even moreso:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/19/2010564/02- ... - t3hmyth, on 07/21/2008, -0/+77This is one of the few times that a slideshow is completely appropriate and preferred.
- seantubridy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I agree, and it actually fit on my laptop screen without scrolling and it didn't jump to the top of the page after every slide.
- jdmcadam, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2And it doesn't do a page refresh each time to crank up ad views.
- seantubridy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I agree, and it actually fit on my laptop screen without scrolling and it didn't jump to the top of the page after every slide.
- coltrane68, on 07/21/2008, -0/+19Fantastic analysis. I agree with t3hmyth - slideshow works perfectly here.
BTW, I am a bit disappointed by Nite Owl's overly fit appearance. On the other hand, Silk Spectre looks smokin'.- Lou3000, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3He looks fit, but I read somewhere that he actually gained some weight for the role. Maybe not enough.
Could also be a flashback shot?- matriculated, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5No. When they get Rorshach out of prison he's look pretty slim to me.
- DelayedEraser, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I agree about Nite Owl... in some ways it seems like they are taking the original very seriously and matching it faithfully, but I also get the impression that they have drained some of the mid-life-crisis/reclaiming-youth feel from Nite Owl & Silk Spectre.
- Lou3000, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3He looks fit, but I read somewhere that he actually gained some weight for the role. Maybe not enough.
- HOTM, on 07/21/2008, -1/+18Go to iTunes, search Watchmen, and download the motion comic.
It is the whole first issue in this flash-like animation, it is really neat, and free!
Only problem is there is only one voice actor, and its a dude, so for Laurie the voice sounds really ***** weird. - btschul, on 07/21/2008, -0/+59Apparently there was some controversy surrounding the trailer. Snyder said that he was forced to pull a Speilberg and replace a gun with a walkie talkie, because the MPAA said that you cannot show a character pointing a gun straight at the camera in a trailer. Well, I just watched the ***** awesome new James Bond Quantum of Solace trailer and look at what the ***** I saw: http://picasaweb.google.com/btschul.digg/UntitledA ...
While it is a bit out of focus, that is clearly a gun pointed at the screen. I almost had a ***** heart attack. Where was the MPAA on this one? They are there to protect me, and because of this disturbing frame in this movie trailer, I LITERALLY ***** bricks.
/sarcasm- Kev585, on 07/21/2008, -5/+1that's how they get away with it, it's off angle and not aimed at us, the audience.
- JonTheGoose, on 07/21/2008, -1/+9That's not a gun. That's a bratwurst.
- undeadbydawn, on 07/21/2008, -7/+0It's a British film
- sobe86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+27Anyone else think Ozymandias looks a bit weedy in the trailer?
- DelayedEraser, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2agreed... so far I'm not too psyched about Ozymandias (visually, anyway). I expected him to be a bit more radiant and statuesque - and I can't believe his costume isn't purple and gold anymore.
- goblindegook, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Also, despite what the article says, Ozymandias was never a Roman god.
- Splutterbug, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5I always thought Ozymandias was a bit weedy in the comic too, the trailer looked great up until that graphic that said from the director of 300, hopefully it'll be as good as it looks
- oneoverzero, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5300 wasn't a great movie, but it captured the feel of the comic quite well. I hope that this does the same.
- punkcat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4i went to 300 for some action scenes and CGI skies, wasn't disappointed.
- FutureisDubious, on 07/21/2008, -1/+19Dugg for CG Weiner
- Lou3000, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7I'm actually feeling good about the look of the film from the trailer.
- LimeParrot, on 07/21/2008, -0/+40They did Dr. Manhattan PERFECTLY. Seriously, good job.
- robodork, on 07/21/2008, -2/+12this movie looks awesome
- hydroplane, on 07/21/2008, -19/+1MEH
- HorseloverFat8, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1There's always one.
- 0tis, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2MEH
- HorseloverFat8, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1There's always one.
- ConceptualTrap, on 07/21/2008, -0/+23I don't really get the fanboys crying out against this one. Snyder is definitely suspect, but everything we've seen so far has been remarkably spot on. The few changes that I've seen so far seem alright so far, especially Spectre. Nite Owl being a lil more athletic seems minor to me, especially considering that we've only really seen him in the suit. From what I've read so far the actor actually put on quite a bit of weight for the part so I'll hold my judgement on that until I see more. Ozy still looks too young, but eh, again, I'll wait and see how the actor does. I still remember people were up in arms at hearing about Ledger being cast as the Joker. Fast forward a few months and he's been crowned the best comicbook movie villian of all time.
- Asvetic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1So far, huh.
- Falstaph, on 07/21/2008, -3/+6As a great fan of the book, I recognized all these similarities right away. To that, I give credit to the illustrator, Dave Gibbons, who did such a good job that they had no choice but to rip him off.
I was a little disappointed by the slim Nite Owl, myself, and the slicker Silk Spectre. But I'm trying to keep an open mind.- magiclava, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18If by 'rip him off' you meant 'hire him as the visual consultant to make the film as accurate as possible', then yes i agree with you.
- k4n0s, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18Maybe Alan Moore might not totally despise the so-called "bastardization" off his work this time around....
- lordtyros, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5He will. He actually has no plans to see it. And you won't see his name in the credits either.
- matriculated, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4He probably won't even see it. He hated 300 too.
- jacobj, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7He must have been annoyed for Frank Miller.
- boombye, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3You mean V for Vendetta, as 300 wasn't Alan Moore's work. That was Frank Miller's.
- matriculated, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2He can't hate other peoples work?
- ghindo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Alan Moore doesn't think that his comics can translate into another medium, no matter how well-done it is. That's just how Alan Moore rolls.
- insomniac8400, on 07/21/2008, -2/+22What's with the Robert Downey Junior look alike?
- nearlygod, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3It's the dad from Supernatural!!!
- ConceptualTrap, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6The similarity is striking. It's as if they took Downey from Tropic Thunder, washed off his black face makeup and said, "Alright, now you're the Comedian."
- noots, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5yeah i had to look on IMDB because i was so sure it was him, admittedly i watched the lower quality version, but still.
- cthulhukb, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3He looks more like Javier Bardem to me.
- venir, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1He was in Weeds and Greys Anatomy, both minor roles, but he seems like a pretty good actor.
- Dopeness, on 07/21/2008, -2/+12the Actor playing The Comedian looks exactly like Robert Downey Jr.
- yohnstoppable, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Ya, I had to look it up on imdb to make sure it wasn't really him
- 0tis, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5This comment looks exactly like the one above.
- 3drage, on 07/21/2008, -3/+6You guys hyper-analyze too much. Enjoy it for what it is and realize it's not going to replace your graphic novel, but give you another avenue to enjoy it.
- kmc127, on 07/21/2008, -7/+1This came on before the dark knight and for the first time in 3 hours the theater was dead quiet. One guy said "Whhhhat?" after about 5 seconds and everyone had a good laugh. I was thinking to myself, what the heck is this movie, if everyone else knows what it is at least then I am not a super dork... but even the super dorks didn't know what it was... I guess you had to be there ;-)
- dalittle, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Glad I don't live where you do.
- Osiriscky3, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Glad I don't have to wake up every morning and be you.
- hagfish70, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I experienced the same thing at the theater I was at, but being familiar with the comic book and pumped for the movie, I cried out "hell yeah" as soon as the trailer ended, embarrassing my girlfriend in the process.
- DelayedEraser, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I don't really see why the trailer would be so confounding to people who hadn't heard of the comic... wouldn't they just think "Oh, some sort of super hero movie"?
And uh, why were people in the theatre for 3 hours before the trailers started? - boombye, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I know plenty of people who got very excited when The Watchmen, The Spirit, and T4 trailers popped up on the screen.
- InsaneOni, on 07/21/2008, -14/+3Digg me down, but this movie looks terrible.
- killerknives, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2The shot of the comedian was matched with the wrong panel. It's supposed to be Dr. Manhattan's memory of him in the war.
- pinkcherry, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9That's latex my friend, not PVC ;)
- Number23, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Love the comic and I've very excited for the move, but I didn't like the fabric look of Rorschach mask, it should be more like latex. In fact, the fabric from which the mask was made is describe as latex in the book.
- luke16, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5Im waiting to see what the giant tentacle monster looks like...
- djHBRD, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2As someone who had never heard of Watchmen before going to see the Dark Knight... I can't ***** wait.
- tawong, on 07/21/2008, -7/+2Am I the only one who's not interested in this movie? It looks cool, then again 300 looks cool and falls short. His movies look too pretentious and no substance.
- inkswamp, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2There's a whole lot of substance in Watchmen. It would take an intentional effort to diminish that in film, but I'm just hoping the stylistic touches don't overwhelm it. I thought 300 was a good flick but the over-stylized crap got really tiresome about 15 minutes in.
- inkswamp, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7It looks fantastic. I'm just concerned that it's going to go over-the-top with the trendy, slo-mo action shots that started to get ridiculous looking in 300. I mean, I can handle one or two of those, but when it's every other shot, it starts to look like a music video.
- dse78759, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Alan Moore, as far as I can see, has got nothing to complain about so far. I think they'll have to cut the corpse raft symbolism read by the kid at the news stand, but quite frankly, that didn't add that much for me, being the illiterate retard that I am. But that would seem to be that snake worshipping Alan would get a bug up his butt about.
And it's going to be rated 'R', no doubt: Dogs split with cleavers, CGI weiners, Silk Spectre getting down with multiple glowing pervs , who are actually a front for the Dr while he does work in the other room.
It'll be awesome. - rookworm, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Executive summary:
The film is faithful to the comic. The nerd fans have been appeased.
also lol at the chode ("Urbangypsy") who was nitpicking in the comments at the TFA - Ratteler, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I was really against this film. I still say there is no way in hell to fit all 12 issues into a single film. Not even if it's 3 hours long.
But as for as the visuals go.... A++++++!
I would say this is being done as good as Hollywood can do it without going to a 12 Hour mini-series format. - vichussmith, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Love it!
- thirteenthcor, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Man Dean Morgan looks so much like Robert Downey Jr.
- albotropolis, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1This has been so much better done at other, smaller websites.
- solid12345, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Trailer breakdown:
A ***** of CGI
End of movie - JesseJack, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0Visually, this movie looks amazing and fairly true to the Graphic Novel. What I worry about though is that it won't appeal to people who haven't read the novel, its very niche and may be a bit complicated for people who don't know the back story.
I don't know, I think the film will be great for fans who have been waiting a long time for someone to take a crack at Watchmen. Still, it seems like a daunting task to take on. I hope for the best and am excited, though perhaps it would have been better as more than one film.
