- RogerStrong, on 10/12/2007, -28/+108Serenity is at the top only because it's recent. Yeah, it was very entertaining, but it's not in the same league as Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It reminded me of Rocket Robin Hood: The solar system is chock full of habitable planets and asteroids(!). No worries about how you'd get them all into orbits the proper distance from the sun to support life, because..... they're in fixed positions! The planet the preacher was on is always right next to the secret-experiment-gone-wrong planet, with the reaver space in between.... - gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50Apollo 13 wasn't sci fi. It really happened.
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -22/+61Buried as inaccurate.
Fifth Element is not on the list. - W00DR0W, on 10/12/2007, -6/+43Agreed.
This list feels completely random, like the guy just listed the first few movies that popped in his head. - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34:: The Top Ten:
1. Serenity (2005)
2. Star Wars (1977)
3. Blade Runner (1982)
4. Planet of the Apes (1968)
5. The Matrix (1999)
6. Alien (1979)
7. Forbidden Planet (1956)
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
9. The Terminator (1984)
10. Back to the Future (1985)

Also, Firefly did a better job of incorporating science into a science-fiction show/movie than most do - it presented a very realistic potential future, as opposed to the idealistic universes we see in Star Wars and Star Trek.
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30It's missing Spaceballs.
- drunkentoad, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33Serenity better than Stars Wars and Blade Runner! - BLASPHEMY !!!
Im against book burning, but this magazine could be an exception. - RogerStrong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Apollo 13?
That's not Sci Fi; that's history. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33#1 The planets in the 'Verse were already there, and were terraformed.
#2 Miranda was the farthest out, so, the Alliance used it as an experiment. All planets are closer to the sun than Miranda
#3 Wtf do you mean by fixed positions? They ORBIT... - CyPhiRevolution, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Serenity was a good movie, but I agree its wayyy to early to compare it to the likes of classics such as Star Wars. What were they think(drink)ing?
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23@robdickinson:
a) it's not twenty minutes of ship docking. it just feels that way to you.
and 2) even if it were twenty minutes, that's nothing for people with an attention span. the same event in the book might take 45 minutes to read. doesn't mean it's boring. there's a lot to take in, and the movie has a very unique pace. it's not an action movie like the majority of the movies in the list. it's an art film.
@anubis2051:
no, you're not the only one to find it hard to watch or understand. in fact, you're probably in the majority. but movie critics don't really represent the majority, they represent people that have studied hundreds of films, and those people tend to like 2001 because it stands out so dramatically from most fantastical sci-fi films. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I think they were going for the top ten best original and popular sci-fi movies.
Only way to explain the absence of Dark City, T2, Aliens, etc. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Come on. I like the Stargate movie too, but I'll admit it isn't 10 top list worthy.
(sorry, typo in last post) - dp1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15what about 12 monkeys, brazil, dune, city of lost children, children of men, x-files movie, 5th element, wrath of khan, time bandits, dark crystal, total recall, robocop, akira, stargate, minority report, pitch black, gattaca? can't you just fit 20 movies into a top 10 :p.
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Which could explain why "Star Wars" is only number 2. I'm am really surprised that Episode 4 (aka Star Wars) is on the list, but not Empire, which IMO is the best of the original trilogy.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23I used to be a hardcore Star Wars fan, but now that the prequel trilogy is finished, and you watch all 6 films, I've noticed that the only good film is Empire. All the others suck.
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Every time someone mentions Deus Ex, another 5 reinstall it.
- malfourmed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The first time I watched 2001 was on a 14" TV with dinky speakers. Unsurprisingly, I didn't get it. THIS was the best SF movie of all time?
The second time I watched it was on a big screen with surround sound. And now I understand. Yes, it's substantially plot-less with characters who are cyphers, but not all films have to be driven by plot or character. 2001 is all about the concept and the experience. It's a slow-burn mind trip and that, along with its verisimilitude and technical brilliance, means it deserves to be on the list. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Serenity is good, but come on...#1? A sure case of Fanboyitis if I ever saw one.
- Karma85, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Deus Ex! Oh wait... that isn't a movie =(
- alski707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Kubrick is wildly over-rated as a movie director"
Are you insane?
- Full Metal Jacket
- The Shining
- A Clockwork Orange
- 2001
- Dr. Strangelove
- Spartacus
nuff said. - gquaglia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Your right. Go into the street and mention Serenity I bet 1 in 10 will know what you are talking about. Do the same with Star Wars and it will be 10 out of 10. Sorry Serenity fans, but while the show may have been good, it will never be a classic like the others on that list.
- laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12this list says much more about the magazine and it's readers than anything about SF films.
- jellbell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This is screwed up...2001 @ # 8 unbelievable ....and for people who say 2001 is boring eternity ....guess what they did not get the movie anyway, so don't bother!
- scarz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19Am I the only geek that found Serenity a bore? In my mind it is not even in the same league as Star Wars.
- slothlovechunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Money?
Gone With the Wind and Titanic. Both movies I only need to see once, and the latter I wish I had never seen.
Money don't buy good art. - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I watched 2001 for the first time when I was 13, it is the kind of movie that you might not get right away, but you are amazed at the scale of it, the music, the feel of the movie, the mystery. You have to watch it a bunch of times, but it gets better every time. I neve found 2001 boring. Frankly stuff like stargate and serenity bores me, I don't find shows like that good at all.
This list feels completely, off-the-top-of-the-head random, worst list ever. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9> Am I the only one who finds it hard to watch 2001?
Sadly, looking over some of the other reactions posted here, probably not.
Do yourself a favor and watch it *and* read the book and think very carefully about what's happening, the overall arc of the story. Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick conceived the book and film as a single project and created them both simultaneously, working together, and they intended that the film and book would complement each other. You don't really get everything from just watching/reading one. (BTW, skip the sequels. They're awful.)
And yes, it requires some intellectual response from the viewer. It attempts to engage you philosophically. Don't be like the average short attention span jack-off on Digg who dismisses it because there aren't flashy effects and laser guns and things whizzing by at light-speed. 2001 is probably one of the most profound statements about humanity ever put on film/print. It wasn't meant to be easy. Give it a chance. The more you immerse yourself in it, the more you get from it. It's really that good. - glu0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8what about The Day the Earth Stood Still? that should definitely be in the top 10 list.
- Onebaseman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Dark City should be on the list, and its absence has nothing to do with originality, as the Matrix bites heavily from it.
I have no idea how Forbidden Planet is on that list either. It may have been groundbreaking for the time, but that doesn't make up for its other shortcomings.
In short, they should do their best to claim this list as an April Fool's joke. - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14No kidding, Fifth Element is one of my faves although Serenity does belong up near the top as well I think.
- Jowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10KHAAAN!
- camg188, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I always thought that Aliens was the only sequel that surpassed the original. Ever. In any genre.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8Yes because Jar Jar Binks is a good indication of how great a film will be.
- malfourmed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I know that the comment was a joke (or I would hope it was!) but to reply seriously:
Even as a die-hard Trek fan I'd say that only TWOK deserves to be on that list. It's not only a good Trek movie, not only a good SF movie, but a good movie, period. TMP had the aspiration, but failed in execution. All the others were substantially popcorn flicks, some good (eg FC), some execrable (TFF), some in-between. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Serenity is fast becoming the most overrated movie in the history of geek cinema.
My God, people, get a ***** grip on reality! - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8sorry, but back to the future is still better than serenity
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Read the book- that's top 10 material.
- IamZed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Not *****. Just far from the top ten. Very far.
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I literally LOL'ed at that list.
In all seriousness, I was a latecomer to the Firefly party, and I loved it, and I loved Serenity as a cap off to the prematurely ended series, but seriously, best scifi film ever? Ummm, no. I think I would put Children of Men or The Fountain on that list before Serenity if it had to be something recent, and Children is barely scifi, more like speculative fiction.
Buried as total *****. - bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Metropolis and Frankenstein, 2 oldies but goodies.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I might have liked 5th Element more if it could decide what kind of movie it was trying to be. One minute, it's campy, over-the-top and self-effacing and the next it's dark and sinister and serious. It's like the director was trying mash Rocky Horror Picture Show and Blade Runner together. It never gelled for me and I thought the story and characters weren't particularly well-developed and engaging. I've never understood the adoration people heap on it.
- Yurimanna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8For that comment - you have my eternal love.
NOTHING beats the original Deus Ex. - talktomikey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Terminator 2 was WAY better than the original. I would say that was the best sequel hands down.
And yes BTTF2 was better. You can't get anymore clever than that plot - Jobless06, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Quite agree, mac. Serenity is far below Class A movies in every way. I wasted my time watching it. Star Wars is #1, even only the last film to take.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Night of the Comet wasn't that great. Too many plot holes and bad acting.
I'm gonna assume "Battlefield Earth (2000)" was a giant typo. - Thex1138, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9...oh and why isn't 'Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure' on the list ? :-)
- Thex1138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What about THX1138? :-)
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You couldn't put Starship Troopers on the list without Robocop.
And neither are really top 10 worthy. -
