- Toon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12We're nerds? Like, huge, huge nerds.
- Strimkind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11interesting list...although star wars ep III does NOT belong on there (it does not belong in the top 50 regardless).
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10star wars was an independent film?
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No. Episode 4 was created under 20th Century Fox so all but 1 are independant
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10what about City of God?
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+111. Pulp Fiction
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
3. The Usual Suspects
4. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
5. Psycho
6. Memento
7. The Silence of the Lambs
8. Apocalypse Now
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
10. To Kill a Mockingbird - H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Digg for Leon being pretty high up there.
- mchase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's how they calculate its place in the top 50, not how they calculate if it's an independent film or not.
- Kajico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5whoah i see a lot of omissions there...
where's Run Lola Run, Life is Beautiful, Clerks, Amelie, and Pi? - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Star Wars movies are independent of Hollywood
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm more excited by the bottom ten.
I need to see this one!

Hillbillys in a Haunted House:
Country singers on their way to Nashville have car trouble, forcing them to stop at an old haunted mansion
hell, the genre was enough to get me.
Crime / Musical / Horror / Comedy - prence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's because independent filmmakers tend to think they're funny when they're not..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3reservoir dogs is an indie film.
- krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting to see not many comedies on the list. Is this simply because they do not get high ratings on IMDB? or there are not many made independently? or both?
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seeing as no film studio funded the film and Lucas paid for it out of his own pocket, yes, it is independent.
- excalibrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Episode 3 was considered indepenedent?
- skaughtm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3believe it or not, but rupert murdoch funded fight club. 20th century fox.
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Too many good movies, I wouldn't be able to name a top 10.
- prence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, also because it's easier to get big budget backing (that sounded odd) for comedies.
- colemip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Where's Clerks?
- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the ones you just named are pretty much the top 10 best ever, in addition to being the best indies.
- rabbitracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no it doesn't since lucas funded it himself without a major studio hence the definition "independant"
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. I saw that was thought "wtf?"
- mchase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent film but I believe Miramax produced/distributed it. Not sure what the requirements would be for it to be an independant film but I think this counts it out.
- cma3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think that the word 'independent', considering its usage to describe a sector of the industry, should not have been used for this. Its very confusing.
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, that is a must see.
- BerenTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1er.. no they aren't. They are voted on by users of the site. Whoever visits votes.
- ekosystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is Mulholland Drive from David Lynch ??
- MonkeyLord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize that it was even and independent film!
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is "War and Peace" independent? They have it as #15.
It was a huge production funded entirely by the USSR government (as all other Soviet films). Suspicious list...
Btw, if you want good cinema, watch Three Colors by Krzysztof Kieslowski. - ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No offense to the K-Smith fans in here but Clerks, in my opinion, does not amount to any of these films. I know some of these were bigger and what Kevin did with Clerks given his budget was great and all, but on their scale, it just doesn't fit in.
Many people act like it was this amazing movie but I just don't get that. It had funny duologue, but most the credit given to 'Smith shouldn't be given for what his film was but for how he brought it about on such a small budget.
And just a comment: don't mod comments down just because you disagree with them... I don't mod down your 'where's Clerks' comments, I actually mod them up because they are relevant to the topic. This is my opinion and I gave it with relevant points and all so if you want to disagree than state your rebuttal and I'll be happy to listen. Many people are too quick with their thumbs down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know what their classification of "Indie" is, apparantly it's only a small budget.
because kill bill is most certainly NOT an indie film - candiru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2reservoir dogs?
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They must be using a really bad definition of independent because I know some of those movies had heavy studio involvement.
- thydzik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so true.
all great movies - ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know what you mean RabbitTracer but Lucas Films is a pretty major studio these days... it can really go either way.
- SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize so many of those were independent, I've seen almost 2/3 of them. Good list and interesting to see how it was calculated.
- rabbitracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1both were produced independantly without backing from major studios.
- mlazaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how the hell is revenge of the sith an indie film? it took a couple hundred million to make that film....does that not defy the pure definition of an INDEPENDENT film?
- demesisx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OK, so how are any of these independent? They were almost all funded by the major studios.
- rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
Where W, R, v, m and C are equal to what? - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Life is Beautiful should really be on every "best ____ movie" list as far as I'm concerned. Subtitles tend to run movies for me, but Life is Beautiful was so well made that it didn't matter.
- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like I have some more movies to watch. I have already seen 29 of the movies on this list.
- Zigerot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how are pulp fiction and episode III "independent" films.
- Shamonue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The highest-grossing independent film of all time (unless this has changed recently) is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- covertbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for Run Lola Run. Also, where are Show Me Love and Lilya 4 Ever? You can't have a top films list of any kind without something from Lucas Moodysson on there. And Pulp Fiction sucks.
- mwong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seemeed to me like it was an okay to good movie with a great ending.
I was really surprised with how much I agreed with this list. - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3But they aren't good.
- dsmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had some free time...It looks like Clerks may have just missed the list...
weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating) = 7.9
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes) = 50,601
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 50 (currently 200) C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.6)
WR = (50,601 / (50,601 + 200)) * 7.9 + (200 / (50,601+200)) * 6.6
WR = (50,601 / 50,801) * 7.9 + (200 / 50,801) * 6.6
WR = 0.99606306962461368870691521820437 * 7.9 + 0.0039369303753863112930847817956339 * 6.6
WR = 7.8688982500344481407846302238116 + 0.025983740477549654534359559851184
