I work at one and in the home theater department. The THX Monster cables we sell are usually marked up 200%-400%. Employees can get a $150 cable for $30 or $40.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dear God, you people are such whiners!
Getting to the topic, I very much enjoyed this episode of Systm. I had no idea about the steps involved in the making of A/V cables, and I found this interesting.
This episode, IMO, is an improvement over the previous two. It's longer, with more in depth instructions, and it explains a few things about cables that you may not have known. I think even a total novice could go out and make his own cables by following this episode's instructions.
It has the added benefit of potentially saving people a lot of money. Why spend over $100 on high grade cables when you can custom make your own at a fraction of the cost?
Excellent episode. - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the systm website:
"Although, it might seem that there is not much that can be said about cable organization, you would be missing the real reasons for making your own cables. Length is one of the best reasons. Most pre-made cables don't come in lengths shorter than 3-4 feet and the average connection for most people range from 1 to 3 feet in length. If you add up all of the extra wire behind your entertainment center you might be looking at 30+ feet of wire total. What happens when you coil copper wire together into a large bundle? You make an antenna which might be nice if you want to listen to the smooth sounds of the 1920's but not practical in our application. This interference is what causes most of the problems with your audio and video signals. So it seems clear now that your goal in organization is to minimize the times that any cable crosses any other cable. Running all of your cables at 90-degree angles and making them to length to prevent coils can accomplish this." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Honestly, i didn't think it was all that great...
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Like my open letter to Kevin suggested, even if he's tryijng to be mainstream about it, he still needs to try to be a little more underground or gritty -- or atleast add that extra touch to it."
I prefer practical over KeWl and l33t haXor stuff. - kfstickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Systm Episode 3 the episode Radio Shack doesn't want you to see.
- timeshifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't play the Quicktime file I downloaded. The error says "You may experience problems playing a video track "systm--oo3--avcabling--large.h264.mov because the required compressor could not be found.". Looks like h.264 is part of Quicktime 7, which isn't released yet, except in beta.
Any ideas? Do I need Quicktime 7, or can I just install a codec? - drewmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this is just a lull and systm hasn't jumped the shark yet. I actually found myself sifting through the episode after about 15 min. Eventually I just shut it off...bummer. Better luck next time.
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's on the second day downloading and not finished yet! :-(
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Timeshifter I believe you have to download Quicktime 7 for Windows, I believe it's just a preview version, it's not really beta.
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Note on the price of cables at Best Buy: Best Buy marks up some items, like cables, an insane amount. I bought a $15 S-VIDEO cable with the employee discount (10% above cost I believe) for $2! That's easily a 700% markup! How do they get away with it? People make uneducated decisions and purchase those items.
I think the info in this episode (assuming it is correct) is awesome! Monster cable is ridiculously expensive and only seems to get more over priced as time goes on. Hopefully as people start making their own cables Monster will be forced to lower their prices. (Or Best Buy which marks them up an insane amount) - doofus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@niptacular
The episode is only 46 minutes. - jrsl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm stuck. At 99.9%. I still need .2 Mb, and it's downloading like crazy, but to no avail. Anyone with the same problem/with a solution?
- timeshifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, Quicktime 7 has been downloaded and installed. Seems to be working fine. Haven't been through the episode all the way yet.
What I'd really like to see is the same kind of detail for how to make nice CATV cables with compression fittings. - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will someone who has it fully downloaded host an http mirror? I'd be more than willing to seed the file. I'm downloading right now, but according to BT, the download wont be done for a day and a half.
- cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm currently uploading the Xvid Large to Usenet. It should be done uploading in about an hour and a half. When it's complete you can get the NZB for the file at http://www.technzbs.tk/ or browser to alt.binaries.multimedia in Usenet.
By the way, when I'm done uploading to Usenet I'll be back to seeding on BitTorrent. :-) - piptech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To anyone needing http mirrors, I've got one which serves LARGE Xvid files of all 3 episodes
http://dragon-jade.com/systm - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" I like to make it nice and pretty!" Seriously though, the "Cable Guy" used those words wayyy too much. Great video though... Learned a few things...
- searse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great detail. awesome episode.

- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Systm is always Great i cant find any TECHTV Shows quiet like Systm/thebroken
- OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES! Got to love Systm! Ill Seed this for sure, already my up speed is 30Kb/s Cant wait till my download is done. Thanks for the episode guys!
- LeegleechN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the in-depth coverage. I learned a lot, and this will save me money in the future. Great episode.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those complaining about speed - consider this - there are about 1200 leechers and only 200 seeds (From what I can see). Be patient, as more people finish, the speeds will increase.
By the way, for those who have finished, how long is this? 660 megs is massive for systm... - Dennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm seeding. I kind of walked off for a little bit during the show, but it was still good.
- sharedferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, 1500 people with the file, 40 of them connected to me, and I'm still getting low speeds. Stop being leechers and let people download from you, people!
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want More!
- jfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, it's a great video. The way that guy used cable management to hook up Dan Huard's entertainment system was inspiring. What a beautiful setup.
- Quickstrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an awesome video! The man they got to do the work seemed very knowledgeable on the subject and was easy to understand. This will definitely help me out in the future!
Thanks Systm team! Another great release :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesnt seem that exciting :S.
- niptacular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how long is this episode?
- wvstephens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you for the direct link.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy forking schick - 1060 diggs when i clicked on the link and it jumped to 1064 by the time this page loaded!!!!!
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0Oh and I just finished the small h.264 and now i want to go out and make me self some, and sell some as well.
- jarva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woo, so it finally finished downloading and i've finished watching it. i'd just like to say for the people that just assume they aren't going to like it based solely on the fact that it's about DIY cables, i thought the same as well, but it was really well done. it was much more interesting than i thought it would be. good job systm.
p.s. i still would like to see alternative downloading options other than bit torrent - OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow I'ma dumbass, I clicked into the torrent in Azureus and noticed you could set individual d/l up speeds, so I messed around with my upload slots and accidentally put it at 40000 b/c it was lagging. I put it back down, but from that point on I had 40kb/s steady upload and my d/l went down to 10b/s. Thank god azureus has that "restart" thjing where it remembers your seeders now I'm gettin like 120kb/s on the H.264. Will seed all week! unlimited up
- Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I have set my upload speed to max, and will seed for probably 5 days or so. I hope everybody does the same. Yea, I wish people would seed, it's not like you can get in trouble for it. Systm is free to do what ever you want with, unlike if you were seeding Starwars Ep#III. :)
"I said good day!" - markbaltes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the direct link zoneman.
- captainsniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the majority vote on this one. This episode was not nearly as good as the second and could not have taken long to put together. Example: Approx 2 months ago I made an entire collection of cables for my home theater system. Started with very little knowledge on the topic and learned everything episode 3 covered with about 1 hour worth of reading & research on some quality A/V sites.
I guess the entire operation of revision 3 was relocating over the coarse of the past month, so well have to be patient and hope the content gets better. - bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0People, start seedinging it, even if you have to re-download. Im personally downloading the h.264 in both small and large as well as the wmv of the large. Im still seeding episodes 1 & 2 and they still get a bunch of activity. Im even seeding diggnation 4 & 5. Even when a new episode comes out continue seeding, thats the only way this works, people need to seed. SEED DAMNIT!
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0close to 4 hours downloading.... and it goes from 4hrs left down to 2hrs and up to 8+ hrs left.... wtf people?? could like 900 of you people please stop to please me?? lol... oh man... it better be worth it
- kmanb182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I liked this episode espically since a month ago my pops bought the complete Monster Cable colletion for his new toy. I am going to try this
- LioConvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Once more people finish the file and start seeding the speeds will increase.
- sandyobrien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seeding
also, best episode ever imo. very informative. -
