- GaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always ignore the 2-day rental and bring it back within 7 days. My brother-in-law uses Netflix and loves it. With Netflix you can return the video whenever you want to.
- scottso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The "late fees" never went away. They just extended the time you could have a movie out, and if you came back "late" with it, you'd be charged a "restocking" fee.
Is there any difference? Several state attorneys general (NJ, CA, NY, and many more) didn't think so and sued Blockbuster's ass for fraudulent advertising.

Been using them since they were brand new, and with *very* few problems which were always corrected. Every once in a blue moon they'll ship us the wrong disc or one will arrive in unplayable condition - but that has only happened once or twice now since the beginning.
Have you noticed the signage around blockbuster anymore? No longer are there glossy full-color posters for every ***** movie coming down the pipe. Just over-sized generic primary-colored block lettering announcing how terrific they are... The sounds they are now making are the final gasps and death-rattles, which is perfectly appropriate and makes me giggle. Good riddance, foul sirs! :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The blockbuster business model is history. On-demand video via torrents.
- thicke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll never pay a Blockbuster late fee again. I just pay a flat fee to Netflix instead.
- Wolfbeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hoping of course that Blockbuster will see the amount of people taking advantage, and revoke the whole idea.
- OttoReverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"50% of blockbusters revenue comes from late fees, just like credit cards companies."
Where do people come up with figures like that? I don't see what the big deal is. Blockbuster tried something different that benefits the customer and maybe boosts their sales. Some locations can't make a go of it so they are switching back. Big deal. I don't know of any other major chain that doesn't charge late fees. Like many people have said, if you don't like Blockbuster, try Netflix. - hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is why i dont rent and only steal movies to view once
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in canada they have always, since there "no more late fees" thing, stated that you will be charged $1.75 if you bring the movie back between 8-30 days.
no late fees if you bring it back within 7 days.
sometimes you gotta be a lawyer to read that ***** - woody94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a plug for BB, I'm from a small town and we don't have a blockbuster, I signed up for their online service similar to netflix because I had a free trial period offer, well I liked it so much I kept it, for a few months, then I decided that I was watching more movies than I should have been and it was taking away from my school work and social life so I canceled it. Well I recently moved to the big city, and restarted my online BB membership because I have more free time, so I get 3 movies at a time (I guess I could theoretically make this into 21 movies in a month (3 at a time, 4 days turnaround)) for 14.99, AND I get two free in-store rentals a month, great for picking up an impulse movie. AND I get a free previously view movie every three months, and a Buy one get on free every 3 months. And to the people who say "I didn't know people still used BB" I hope you're kidding, because that is an ignorant statement, do you think those things fund themselves? Yeah $4 a movie for 2 days sucks, but the rest of the deal is awesome, and every time I've had a problem, missing DVD and address issues when I first moved, they fixed the problem no questions asked.
- shadimirza, on 09/06/2009, -0/+1Why everyone hasn't switched over to Netflix is beyond me. The company actually LOWERED their fee for the 3 movies at a time plan.
- nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with Blockbuster here was that they would say you were late, even though you returned on time. Criminals.
- Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I mistrust Blockbuster. I was a customer for a few years. And ALWAYS had a problem with being charged late fees when the
movies were returned on time or before they were due. It got so
bad that I had the employee's sign and date the receipt when I
returned movies.. I then said screw it and moved over to Netflix. - NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*If you are still a Blockbuster customer, then you get what you deserve!*
You mean a monthly plan worth much more than the 20 I paid for it? I can go back whenever I want, as many times a day as I want, and only pay 20 dollars a month.
Let's see, bring 2 DVDs home, toss them into the computer, and then rip a copy, and then go back for 2 more.
I don't why you guys are still dicking around with paying for each rental when they have the monthly account option now. - Inthraller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Blockbuster in my hometown also sucks, on occasion they would tell you had a late fee, but have no idea for what movie. If you bitched about it enough, they wouldn't make you pay it. But they suck regardless. I tried Netflix for a while, but soon I ran into they're own version of suckness. When you are efficient at watching and returning movies quickly, you are moved down on the priority list for getting new movies and when a new release is put out you are on a "wait list." When you are on the trial period, you have the highest priority and always get the movies you want, but when you begin to rent movies quickly, they try to throttle you into waiting. After about a year and half, I canceled. Netflix is a hell of a lot better than Blockbuster, but I would just rather go to Hastings - they've never given me a phantom late charge in the five years I've been using them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's hard to rent movies from them anymore, and I'm part of the reason why... When you have no real urgent need to go out in the freezing cold to return a bunch of crappy movies you didn't really want - but rented anyway because everything else was out - you don't. This business model was a nice shot, but it just doesn't work. I swear I've had a few games for over a month just because I know when I take them back I'll only be charged an extra $1.25 to restock it, when I paid $7-8 for the week rental.
They just don't have enough copies of anything to make this work. There have been a few times when I could have gotten a rain-check on their "guaranteed new releases" because they were all out. I never saw that happen once before they implemented the No Late Fees program.
They should just go back to the way they were before. It's nice to keep rentals for as long as you want, but not if its something you didn't really want in the first place. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Late fees or not, I won't be renting from Ballbuster. I will be one happy camper the day that wretched company finally goes under. I haven't done business with them in years because of their overly aggressive tactics with late fees and the utter hostility I encountered when I called their corporate office to complain about said tactics. And I know others who have dealt with the same. I'm just surprised they are still around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Long Live Netflix!!!
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I stopped going to blockbuster when i realized that they edit the movies that they rent out. Thanks, i'll leave the editing to the people who actually made the movie, not some jackass in Cockbuster's headquarters. You're paying lots of money for a version of the movie that the director didn't even want.
zip.ca ... or even better... emule. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing I didn't know reading the article. I thought the "no late fees" was in every store. No so, grasshopper. Blockbuster has 1060 (+/-) franchises, only 550 adopted it (52%). With the current 150 that dropped it, only about 400 (38%) now participate.
Since a minority of the stores charging late fees (and, ironically, nearly half always did) I think they have to stop advertising nationally that they don't have late fees. They do. - steamynachos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It costs 7.50 to rent a game there. Blockbuster can suck my wang
- Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bye Blockbuster, don't let the turnstyle hit you on the way out!
- diggenerate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I posted this story about a month ago -- Old News, no digg

And the US government in conjunction with aliens from the planet Zorush are covertly implanting mind control on Blockbuster DVDs too!! - hardcoreUFO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you are still a Blockbuster customer, then you get what you deserve!
- Timsher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was just thinking about this the other day, how do movie rental places plan to stay in business when often you can buy the movie for cheaper on the Internet than they charge to rent it?
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bastages!
- dptechie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I hope Blockbuster stays I prefer renting from there then from Netflix. I haven't had a problem with Blockbuster for quite a while and I enjoy the convince of being able to drive to my local store and rent movies that I want then take then home to watch, burn, and return.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhh yeah $8 i never paid to them in "non late fee late fees" despite the giant "no late fees" banner out from.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im noticing a lot of morons commenting. The late fees arenow a reasonable 1.29 a day on everything, not that bad and cheaper than most every other place you can go to. They were losing more money when they had nothing in stock and customers were leaving for that reason then for the few people that leave because there is a 1.29 late fee. Big Deal. What are you gonna do? Go to another store where its 3 dollars? 4 or 5 dollars a day?
- Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey - I have an idea. Return your movies on time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+150% of blockbusters revenue comes from late fees, just like credit cards companies.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why are people still using down the blockbusters?? after all those years of late fees and attitude from those folks netflix is a g*d send. i wouldn't care if blockbuster was 90 per cent cheaper and spanked my bottom - we're sticking with Netflix!
- csopelario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... I never new people still used BBuster.
- winglian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news. My hometown blockbuster went back to "late fees" about 4 months ago. Of course they are calling it something different. There explanation is that they are a franchise and not a "corporate" store so they don't have to follow the no late fees rule. Apparently ALL corporately owned blockbusters are required not to charge late fees still. You might want to verify if this is the case.
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah its free. It just cost you more per disc. I had a friend that kept 3 out for like 3 months. No late fees. It just cost him about as much as it would to buy the three discs new to rent them. Great deal there."
Maybe if your idiot friend sent the movies back then he would have seen at least 45 movies (assuming he watched 3 movies / week for 3 months) for the cost of about $1.33/movie (a lot less than the $4 / movie from BB). NetFlix only works to your advantage if you keep watching movies and rotating them out. It is not for the occasional viewer. You should be renting at least 5 movies a month ($20 per month / $4 per movie) to benefit from Netflix. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My wife and I have different last names and Blockbuster has been the only place (in my professional career or my personal life) that has ever given me trouble over it. They wouldn't let me use her rental card because of it, even though her address and the one on my D.L. are the same and I wear a wedding band.
We've never been back and love using Netflix. Sure it can be more if you don't return the movies, but then why rent anything if you're not going to watch them? - modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never had problems with blockbuster, I guess that could be because I've never had late fees. If you cant return a movie on time that's your damn problem. If blockbuster wants to keep no late fees what they should push the subscription plan like netflix has, but on top of it make it so you can go into any BB and return and pick up movies there as well as online. Last time i looked they let you rent two from inside the store or something. They would have the best of both worlds i think that way, the people who want the movie delivered use the net and the people who hate computers but like to go browse. I would like both just because sometimes its nice to get out of the house and go kill time looking at a whole bunch of movie boxes. I use use movie gallery over BB just because they have porn ;)
- crythias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason I might go to Blockbuster is to figure out what I might want to put on my Netflix queue. And, if I'm hankerin' for some laffy taffy or some impulse buy. Once in a while, I'll buy a used VG or DVD, 'cause it's there.
We figured out about 6 movies out per month (on time) would pay for Netflix. When I'm in the mood for a series of DBZ or other anime (or even the latest TV show release, like 24), I can run through 6-10 in a 2 week period.
Yes, if you hold 3 movies for three months, it's costly. But, gee. Doesn't personal responsibility account for anything at all these days? - H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My Blockbuster has had late fees reinstated for months now...
Since the summer, even. - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me, or is Blockbuster getting expensive since this "no late fees" crap started? I payed over $7.00 for a 5 day game. So much for stopping for a bite to eat on the way home.
- decile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly why I switched to Netflix a few months ago.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just use Zip.ca and never have to worry about late fees. I think Netflix.com is the US version. Blockbuster in the UK has a subscription rental system as well I think...
Why can't Blockbuster just burn more copies when they run out? I mean the studios would get more money, people would get their movies, and Blockbuster would always have in-stock... the geezers are still in control I guess. - sebnukem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one word:

no late fees. no driving. no stupid-only movies. - rhsjr7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Netflix ... All The Way... Glad this story is building steam.
rhsjr7 - clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's a free country....if you don't like a product or company don't buy there product. I hate when people bitch about prices or companies. Don't bitch...don't spend your money there anymore...it's as simple as that."
Unfortunatly, it's not as simple as that. If I find a member program that will allowe me to use it for both games and movies I'll be all over it. I don't want to pay a fee to Gamefly along with a fee to Netflix and the mom and pop rental places here are even crapier than blockbuster. - charged2885, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not to long ago, they tried the "resocking fee" on me rught in front of a sign that says "Life after late fees". I walked out and have been with Netflix ever since. I hope they go bankrupt.
- mi2ca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I quit those bastards like a bad habit the minute I found out about Netflix. Never looked back. Blockbuster sucks ass. Always has; always will.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blockbuster's "No Late Fees" means you can rent a game with their free coupon and pay the $1.25 restocking fee and then play for over a month. I don't know what beats that.
