- scabbers, on 09/26/2008, -0/+13This article makes up for everything gizmodo has ever done to annoy me.
- Giggy, on 09/26/2008, -0/+10That's sad, the BBC doc on the second disk and the commentary by HST are worth it.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8If you won't shell out $40 for the Criterion edition of F&L in LV, you don't deserve it. The extras alone are worth the price of admission.
However I'm patiently awaiting the Blu-ray release. - samanathon, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7What an amazingly insightful article! I'm so impressed that the restoration process isn't automated and that they they go through each frame!
- KaiUno, on 09/26/2008, -1/+7By stalking him in real life. Have at it!
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6Yes, I'm sure you're much smarter and know what you're doing moreso than these people.
- Andyschism, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Excellent submission and article. Thank you for sharing.
Big Criterion fan, just wish I had the money to buy them all! - Coffeedemon, on 09/26/2008, -0/+564.99 CDN when I picked it up on release. Worth every penny.
- schizogony, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5This is quite an eye-opening article that has gotten me more interested than ever in Criterion Collection movies. I had no idea they did anything to the video.
- LogicBomB, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Bluemotion - probably.
Criterion has been extremely well known to movie buffs for a long while now. Your average "I like movies" bloke probably wouldn't know of them but anyone who actually cares about movies as a hobby would know the name. - t3hmyth, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3It's quite a shame that so many people still haven't come to appreciate the Criterion Collection.
- santaliqueur, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Criterion ***** rocks.
- tdogg241, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2The Seven Samurai
The Killer
Hard Boiled
This is Spinal Tap
Silence of the Lambs
Sid & Nancy
Robocop
Brazil
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
Life of Brian
Rushmore
Chasing Amy
Do the Right Thing
Gimme Shelter
That's 15 films in just the first 100 spine numbers. If you think any of those are lame or boring, I feel really sorry for you. - BossKey, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2After clicking on YouTube videos all week it's always a revelation to see and hear a Criterion Collection disc on the flatscreen. Now when are they gonna do Diva?
- jbmcb, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Criterion does their homework and tries to get the best print available to transfer. If it's an older film they'll even have a new print made from the negatives if they have to. On newer films they'll commission special on-the-set documentaries while the film is shooting. Their DVDs are usually error-free, as well (no wrong format/squeeze bits, cadence correct, etc...)
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I don't regret my Robocop or Thing Criteron editions.
- ptheroux, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Did you read the actual article?
"What about films they've already restored for DVD? Can they just be released on Blu-ray without much extra effort? Unfortunately, not usually. The good news is that once they've done their tape master, they have a high-def copy of it on hand and don't need to re-transfer the original print. The bad news is that once they've got those masters, half of the process needs to be done again because the original restorations were just done in standard definition. Making a quick rerelease of all of Criterion's films to Blu-ray something that just isn't going to happen." - t3hmyth, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2My personal favorite Criterion film is Le Samourai.
- santaliqueur, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2You make it sound like you have no choice in the matter. Go away.
- ibeetle, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2They are discounted stonebone4.
Amazon currently has the Criterion edition of Fear and Loathing for $25.00 new and from the market place $15.00 used. - kbull, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3I picked it up on sale at Best Buy for around $20. A quick search of Google shows it for $25 from Overstock.com
$40? No...you just need to know where to look. - Andyschism, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Yeah cuz any collection that includes Robocop, Hardboiled, The Killer, Fear and Loathing, etc . . is ***** boring. Shut the ***** up Hannah Montana.
- pedepy, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1thats so cool... i hope the studios dont waste any time on porting movies from reel to high def digital format.
problem is you know that in the years to come bluray will get superceded by something else. before another dumb dumb formats war begins again and cripples the remastering efforts, the industry should get togheter sooner rather than later and all agree on an open & extensible media storage format.
i mean, think of the children ! .. - mrthebunny, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1I know they're usually great, but I still can't understands why, Oh Why, they added Armageddon to their collection...
- Bluemotion, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2lol
i am an average 'i like movies' blocke.
you the the nail on the head. :)
to they do only old movies? or new ones too? - krakelohm, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1I doubt that most directors take 'grain' into account. The good ones do, the other 99% don't even notice/care.
- DarkShroud, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1You're just the opposable digits to properly operate an entertainment center.
- BossKey, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1There's a point of diminishing returns though, and we might be approaching it for some types of movies. Scanning at 2K for 1080p may already be overkill for some indie films shot in Super 16 and blown up to 35mm, or even 35mm films shot on grainy high ISO film, and certainly for some very grainy classic films. These won't benefit from being scanned or displayed on any higher resolutions than we have now, so you could just get a Blu-Ray of them today and hang on to those discs for a few decades knowing that there isn't gonna be a better version. Oh sure, the disc format might change or you might end up buying an HD digital download in a few years, but it may have already gotten as good of a scan it's going to get.
- WiretapStudios, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Criterion should come through at least the first 10 comments and restore them to near-funny condition.
- DarkShroud, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2This is why my brother and I stopped buy DVDs 4 years ago. Because we knew Blu-ray was coming, especially for the Criterion collection.
- DarkShroud, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1You are an idiot. They make a digital master in "HD" that is 2x or 4x, both of which are beyond 1080p at this point in time. Then the make they remaster it for the current format which until recently was 480i. It's always better to go from a master because the techniques are always getting better.
- drexl, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1I really dig the 5 or 6 Criterion movies I have and after watching one of the DVDs they have restored I can see the dedication they put in to their work. It makes me mad that other DVD releases can't take a cue from Criterion and at least offer a thoughtful approach to their releases. On second thought, that might be a bad idea because we would end up with horrible transfers with quickly thrown together commentaries and extras....aw ***** it....Gonna go home and watch Life Aquatic with commentary.
- gothicform, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Great, now they can sell us the DVDs again we had already bought once before.
- MrJagil, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Great article. Well written and informative.
Though i must say, the 'Masters of Cinema' series is often just as good as Criterion. - freehunter, on 09/26/2008, -1/+1I don't know if it's the same Criterion, but they made a middleware engine that powers some games called Renderware. They also made Burnout, and I believe they made Black, as well. They're owned by EA.
- nutmac, on 09/26/2008, -0/+0OK, shoot all your photos with ISO set to 1600 then. Although some directors intentionally shoot with grains intact, vast majority are artifacts of having to shoot with limited lighting and/or capturing high speed action.
That said, I do admire Criterion for preservation efforts. I want to see the film exactly as it was shown originally (or director's cut if it doesn't suck), with all the flaws intact. - FallenTurtles, on 09/26/2008, -3/+4I'm so sad: my Criterion Collection version of Armageddon isn't anamorphic, so it looks awful on my HDTV. How can I fully enjoy Bruce Willis in his native format??? How???
- alexanEmpire, on 09/26/2008, -3/+3You made me touch your hands for stoooopid reasons.
- LogicBomB, on 09/26/2008, -3/+3Grain is something I've been interested in recently. It really is true that people look at a high def signal, see grain and think "that's *****". Physical film, as the article describes, has grain and is part of the film.
When you remove grain you actually remove how the director intended that movie to be viewed. - xtothepowerofx, on 09/26/2008, -2/+1you saw something advertised @ 50$.. you bought it.. you don't regret it... ok cool... i also wish everything on earth was cheaper than it actually is. consider yourself lucky that you can afford to throw away 50 bucks on a single DVD
- FatherG, on 09/26/2008, -2/+1I wish some of their DVDs didn't cost so much. I paid $50 for the (now out of print) Criterion Robocop. Not that I regret the purchase but damn, $50 for Xrated Robocop is a bit high. I'd still buy it for a dollar!
- ptheroux, on 09/26/2008, -4/+1I am disappointed to hear that they don't do any physical cleanup of the print before transferring it to a digital form. They just transfer the print which may be dirty, warped, scratched and dusty, and try to do all the restoration on a computer?
Also, WTF have they been smoking to only save their restored versions in standard definition??? They'll have to do the restorations all over again to create HD versions!!! Asshats. - codyman, on 09/26/2008, -7/+2I digg my Criterion Collection Dazed and Confused.... worth every penny cause the best thing about high school girls is that I get older, they stay the same age.... :-)
- stonebone4, on 09/26/2008, -9/+3I admire and appreciate the work they do on these films, but really, $40 for a DVD? That's why I don't own Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. A lot of the Criterion DVD's don't exist as other versions.
- Bluemotion, on 09/26/2008, -9/+1Huh,
am i the only one who thought criterion was a games developer? :s - spry981, on 09/25/2008, -16/+0dupe
- deviationer, on 09/26/2008, -19/+2yawn 99% of Criterion collection movies are lame and boring.
