First Look: The Smurf’s Movie
slashfilm.com — With Hollywood running short on ideas, Paramount greenlit a computer animated movie based on the classic trippy 80 ’s cartoon series The Smurfs (Truth is that the Smurfs are actually 50 years old, having first appeared in comic strips).

- neko6, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Actually, the common conspiracy theory is that the Smurfs are communist (I believe papa Smurf once even quoted Marx), and Gargamel is the evil Capitalist Jew. in the original story he wanted turn the Smurfs into gold.
http://roiword.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/the-smurfs ...
When Nazi Germany wanted to set people against the Jews, they said they brought Communism on the world. When Stalin wanted to set people against the Jews, he said they are Capitalist gold-mongers. Ain't it fun that there's always a minority somewhere to blame for your problems?

"Stephen Sommers will direct (here's hoping he reigns in the CG), from a script by Stuart Beattie. The story is set at Brussels-based GIJOE, an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, and revolves around an international co-ed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil org headed by a Scottish arms dealer." --Real Movie News 11/20/07 - carpespasm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2no, when one bombs they just keep making them. - SilverBlade2k, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9Why do they think that an updated Smurfs movie will be a hit when Garfield was a disaster, plus "Alvin and the Chipmunks" was a failure too?
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Possibly because of creative accounting? They need to pay writers, actors etc a percentage of the profits. Cook the books so it looks like you are making a loss on the movie, and no need to pay anyone anything. I would not have thought that stinkers like Garfield and the chipmunks would have made any money, but if they keep making stinkers, they have to be making a profit out of it. They sure as hell are not doing it as an artistic statement!
- grabulsa, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=alvinandth ...
Alvin and the Chipmunks made $331million on a $60 million budget (not counting marketing).

Garfield made $198 million on a $50 million budget.

- linuxpenguin, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1!SPOILER WARNING!
The plot is this:
A bunch of little blue guys in white berets ogle the only female of the entire species. Then a creepy guy comes down from his castle and tries to kill them all and eat them, but is too dumb and does something to give himself away. Once the Smurfs figure out it was him, they proceed to reprimand him. Then they continue to ogle the only female of the entire species, who proceeds to react like a dumb blonds. There's more, but you fall asleep before you can see it - unfortunately at the movie theater, there's no remote for you to flip to a different channel, as is standard procedure whenever Smurfs are seen.

I suppose there is some nostalgia for the Smurfs. I picture these as young girls who had pictures of Michael Jackson on their wall -- because they truly feared real men. And perhaps boys who truly feared becoming real men. Is that even a big enough group to start a movie? Who knows.
I also hated Garfield, Family Circus, and ,.. well most of the Funny Pages. Do we need to dredge up all the "single-concept that beats a dead horse" cartoons and make movies of them?

- Azymn, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2That is smurfed up.
- koopertrooper, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3maybe we'll get lucky, zombies could rule the planet by then... If this becomes a hit then I will smurfily smurf myself to death
- phantom_mullet, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Guys, I need your help. Do any of you remember that movie with a bunch of cartoon characters like the Smurfs, Ninja Turtles, etc...it was also live action and I remember seeing it as a kid but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the movie...maybe it doesn't even exist but I'm a little baked right now so who knows...
- joot2112, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2"Who framed Roger Rabbit"?

The real story of the Smurfs:
http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/redriver/415 ... - jho78, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, "Alvin and the Chipmunks" wasn't a failure. It made more than $200 million. With that kind of cash, you're bound to see "The Shirt T-t-t-ales Movie" and a "Jabberjaw" flick any day now. However, if they made a "STAR BLAZERS" movie - I'd be there.
- keymanjim2, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0With CGI the way it is now, they can easily make a live action Starblazers movie. Except that most of the plot didn't make any sense. I mean, why did the Gamalons feel the need to destroy the Earth in the process of finding a new home when they had a perfectly good uninhabited planet right next door?
- RobotBuddha, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I'm crossing my fingers for "Funky Phantom".
- MsGo, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Johann and Pee-wee, will I'm sure, be an integral part of the CGI cast.
- AmandaQ, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0One word: meh.
- drewfer, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2-Right when we got in the parking-lot, she started smurfin me.
-No way, shut the smurf up. That is freakin smurf. - apextek, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2hopefully its not like when they butchered the teenage mutant ninja turtles last year.
the CG in that couldn't hold a candle to the live action movies that came out in the early 90's. I hate when the studios slaughter a classic for a cheaply reproduced classic- bjs3171, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1s that a ***** joke?
are people in big rubber costumes what you'd call "live action?"
say what you will about the story, but that was some fine animation.
- bjs3171, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1s that a ***** joke?

I'm Giggle Smurf. Yes, I know what a nerd I am. - mrSimon, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2I was genuinely looking forward to this one.
Judging from the current models, this already looks more than mediocre. - smurf22, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Holy ***** a movie about me!
