- ShannonGB, on 03/27/2009, -2/+23Great digg! I'd rather have Ayrton Senna at 1 though.
- PauliJ, on 03/27/2009, -2/+14Hamilton #20? Really?!?! Two seasons and the first he tossed away by being a dumb ass.
- AmbyR00, on 03/27/2009, -2/+13Why are Finnish names always written without umlauts? It's Häkkinen.
- unknown32, on 03/27/2009, -0/+10What a second Jenson Button is No 41? Winning one race = a top 50 ?? again Really ??
Or a British bias? - WillFight4Beer, on 03/27/2009, -0/+10Buried, awful list, horribly biased in favor of Brits and modern drivers.
- gloth, on 03/27/2009, -0/+9I disagree with the rankings. One can argue who'd deserve it most. The obvious candidates would be:
Michael Schumacher: won the most championships of any driver, and must be credited for bringing Ferrari from near-mediocracy back to dominance.
Ayrton Senna: possible the most talented driver ever. Unfortunately he died much too young.
Maunel Fangio: won a total of 5 championship with 4 different teams, marking him obviously as an outstanding driver.
But Clark? Certainly he has talent, but what is it that even puts him above guys like Prost or Piquet Sr? Other than being British, of course ;-) - ethon, on 03/27/2009, -3/+11Senna should be #1, Schumacher 2, Fangio 3
- lelio98, on 03/27/2009, -0/+8I would say that it is extremely demanding. There are only around 20 seats available, so the demand on talent and success exceeds anything else in the world. I think that it is a valid statement to say that F1 places more demands upon it's athletes than any other sport. Now if you look at physical demands only, then marathons or some other endurance race, but if you include all aspects of a sport, I would say that F1 is probably more demanding than anything else.
WRC is not more demanding, nowhere in WRC do you have to pilot an F1 car around a challenging circuit at suicidal speeds for 2 hours. WRC races are compilations of short stints and much more forgiving of mistakes. Now as for excitement, WRC is definitely a rival. - JackGrinnan, on 03/27/2009, -4/+11Schumacher all the way...
- aerospacemonkey, on 03/27/2009, -1/+8Jim Clark number #1? Who wrote this nonsensical rubbish? Jeremy Clarkson?
- goosefrikin, on 03/27/2009, -2/+9Jim Clark as number 1 while fangio is only number 6? typical english bias
- matt.rubin, on 03/27/2009, -4/+10Michael Schumacher should be #1
he has 5 more world championships and 66 more wins then the first in a more difficult modern sport - MaLLiii, on 03/27/2009, -1/+6jenson is a real talent waiting for the right car, he has always had inadequate machinery and i think this season he will do great things with Brawn.
- hove, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4How is is not a world championship any more? drivers from all around the world race on circuits all around the world in cars built all around the world.
- carlingford, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4Jim Clarke was was a Scot.why would the English be biased?
- rlcanon, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4Try 5 Gs or more for an hour and a half. In 3 layer quilted coveralls and long under wear in a cockpit with temps reaching 122 F. A driver loses 4 pounds during a race. And all while going 200mph on a road course with 19 other cars. An argument can be made for other sports being equally or more demanding, but it definitely ain't tiddley winks.
<a class="user" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula ... rel="nofollow">http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula ...</a> - mastersmite, on 03/28/2009, -0/+4uhhh, Senna.
- Awwzm, on 03/27/2009, -2/+6Alonso above Hakkinen? Ridiculous!
- mface, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Alot goes into winning in F1. The claim can be made that is atleast extremely demanding.
- bblades, on 03/27/2009, -0/+31. Senna 2. Schumacher 3. Clark 4. Fangio 5. Prost. Decent list though
- paulieman, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3***** list... Buried
- aoctavio, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3The only competition where being the best doesn't count.
- Ramza32, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3"world's most demanding" depends on how you understand it. Throughout the 50's to the late 90's F1 was one of the most dangerous sports in the world. Especially in the 1950's. Demanding could be the perfect word for it.
- alwaysnomadic, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3I think Niki Lauda should be in the top 10
- JakeBC, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3There are only three sports: bullfighting, mountain climbing, and auto-racing. Everything else is just a game. -Ernest Hemingway
- scarwars, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I think you're talking about the wrong sport..
- Patori, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Schumi!
- korhojoa, on 03/27/2009, -1/+3Who cares? You people have your "world championship" things aswell in some sports, which noone else plays.
It's not the rest of the world's fault that your number one racing league uses a oval track. Not very challenging to drive around.
"So, let's see how he takes this next corner, OH HE TURNED LEFT WOW WHAT A SURPRISING MOVE"
To be fair, they did try having a NA track once. - FritoPendejo, on 03/27/2009, -6/+8Because no one cares.
- mleh, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2I am so psyched for Sunday.
- ShannonGB, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Aside from the high possibility of instant death from crashing, an F1 driver can suffer brain injury akin to that a boxer, due to the constant vibration and Gs experienced for almost 2 hours.
- 3BePb, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Senna
Prost
Schumacher
back in a day Schumacher had nothing on Senna and Prost
after Senna went into the wall and Prost retired F1 lost its spirit, imo - SugeKnight, on 03/27/2009, -2/+3I think even Jeremy would be smarter than that...Hell he would know to put Schumacher at number 1!
- tecunx, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2USAF1 is coming next year, and the team promises.
- macinit1138, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1A-Ayrton Senna was the best!
- rlcanon, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1My wife and I have gone to six F1 races in Indy, two in Montreal, and one at Monza and nobody is more pissed at Bernie than we are. Between no North American races this year and the "let's let schizophrenic monkeys with hand grenades loose in the pits just to shake things up" management style I'd like to see him replaced, but come on! It's still the best racing on 4 wheels!
- StolenLamp, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2RIP Senna.... and the NSX
- Hellahulla, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1This is a ***** list though, typical Murdoch *****.
I would still put Senna and Prost above Schumacher though. - Hellahulla, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1The writer has no idea how to use character map software?
- doktorrocket, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1For the record, Hemingway never said that.
http://www.timelesshemingway.com/faq/faq5.shtml - mastersmite, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1yeah, but he would have Hamilton a lot higher than he deserves to be, which he already is on the list.
- makemoneynotart, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Senna, the cousin I was named after, FTW. FOREVER.
- Ramza32, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Well it's the risk coupled with the driving. Not just the risk, I should have explained that with a little more depth.
- Vendol, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1hmmmm very interesting digg
- EpicSelekta, on 03/27/2009, -2/+2Bonus points to them for including David Coulthard... probably one of the most consistent racers ever.
- sandip434, on 04/17/2009, -0/+0related to KIMI ...?? !!
a lot ... awesome driver .... - EMsean, on 04/16/2009, -0/+0Are you related to Kimi?
- Hercules, on 03/27/2009, -3/+3I was about to say, but you beat me to it.
WRC is MUCH more challenging. And more entertaining. - seankopelke, on 04/24/2009, -0/+0Yeap, Schumacher should be no.1, but a good digg.
- FearlessFreep, on 03/27/2009, -2/+2Unless you're talking about the budget needed?
