- spencewah, on 10/12/2007, -7/+214BUT THEN I'D HAVE TO HOLD DOWN SHIFT TO DO ***** LIKE THIS.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+82Because 2 is nice... but three??? You haven't tried anything until you've tried ctrl+ctrl+ctrl+alt+delete.
- vsujohn2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+74Um, why do i need a 3rd Control key?
- fatmike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40having a third ctrl key is like having a third testicle... in most situations it is useless, however, it is quite the conversation starter.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28except that the caps abusers wont do this and therefore wont be pissed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33fyi ctrl+shift+escape works the same as ctrl alt delete, so you can use the left strip of keyboard entirely.
- Sargos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Just implement this little piece of code into a clever worm and you have yourself a winner.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19whos up for writeing a virus to do this.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Only one click? I wish I had my registry editor hotkeyed.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Your obviosly not a game who wants that final kill in a match then BAM! What? Oh, right that was my game minimizing and my start menu opening.
- msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Well to be politcaly correct, two clicks are required because you must double click...
- bail0ut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Look for a program called Keytweak - it'll do the trick
- kjizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14But caps lock is cruise control for the ultra hip. Why wouldn't we want that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This should be mandatory for people playing online games
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13And you know what? We don't care :)
- humanaut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ever wish you could disable the numlock key with smashing your keyboard repeatedly into a fire hydrant? This registry hack turns your numlock key into another printscreen key with only one click!!!
- ledmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"* YOU CONTINUE TYPING FOR ABOUT 10-30 SECONDS BEFORE YOU REALISE IT’S ON."
How about stop looking at the ***** keys while your typing. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9As if those who abuse it will know about digg or how to apply a registry patch.
Now if IT managers deployed this accross their lan... :) - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So you mean you hit the caps lock key at least once a SENTENCE?
STRANGE, where did you grow up my friend? - Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11well, almost the same. On my machine, it brings up the task manager right away, while ctrl-alt-del brings up the Windows Security box where you can Lock, Shut Down, etc.
- Insert31990, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Funny thing is, I never learned to use the shift key.
I've gone by in the digital world using nothing but caps lock.
Call me strange, but it's how I grew up. - RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I dont know ask the guy who made it.But i like it because it turns off the caps lock key none the less
- RyanJohnston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I've read a few anti caps-lock articles lately. There are even some folks who want it removed from keyboards. I actually use mine, and would not like to see it go away. It doesn't get in the way when I'm not using it.
Some people say there is no reason to ever use caps-lock. They are not programmers. A lot of code by convention uses all caps to denote constants. It is nice to be able to use caps-lock for typing these sorts of things. - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Actually no, I never ever wanted to get rid of my caps lock key and change it to a control key...
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@spisska:
One would think that Linux users would wholly approve of recoding the Windows OS to meet your needs.
***** hypocrites. - paroxsitic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
From the Edit menu, choose "Add Value" to add a value named "Scancode Map"
with type REG_BINARY.
0000000000000000020000001d003a0000000000 - jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I did this style of registry edit to change my F9-F12 into media keys. It's a long process involving hexadecimal math to get the keys to change. Then a week later I found AutoHotKey. It lets you write scripts to change your keyboard and some other things.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ZaNkY: that's how it works with typewriters. I suppose Insert just never dropped the habit.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I switch l_ctrl and caps on all my computers.
In Linux, just throw this in the InputDevice > keyboard section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps" - filecabinet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6for Vim, I mapped my Caps Lock to my escape key.
- bekeleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Has nobody here heard of RJL software, the amazing computer joke program makers?
I keep one of their joke programs IN MY STARTUP FOLDER for this reason:
http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/entertainment/replacekeys/
Settings:
Turn: "Caps Lock"
Into: "Ignore"
I do the same with num lock. I hate to plug companies, but RJL rocks. - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This site is a total ripoff of John Hallers site... I recommend everyone bury this article and check out the original source:
http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/disable_caps_lock/ - DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wicked little app that KeyTweak, thanks for pointing it out.
- bionerual, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Anybody know how i could figure out how to change it to a different key? Not ctrl
Or change a different key to something else.. - JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42004-06-15 - v2.0 - fixed occasional freeze on reboot after enable_caps
How did this happen? It's a reg entry... - diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't want to lose my caps lock key, but I rarely use the "7" key. Can I make that a Ctrl? How about F11? The more the merrier!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm Keytweaked myself. It is a must when playing Counter Strike
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For me the goal isn't a third Ctrl. I don't touch the other 2 at all once I swap Caps to Ctrl, which I do on every machine I use. If you use emacs shortcuts in text boxes (Linux, Mac OS), or use Windows or Linux where Ctrl is the main shortcut key this is essential.
vi users without happy hacking keyboards: Ctrl-[ is the same as escape. Don't ever leave the home row. keyboard ftw. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seems to me that you could do even more harm by accidentally typing CTRL+something.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Archon's right. ctrl+shift+esc seems to be a shortcut to the task-manager no matter what, which is where ctrl-alt-delete takes most people, because most home users use that crappy Login Screen.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What a useful aPPLICATION. god damnit.
- jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys are looking at it all wrong. There's no need to swap key locations, because the problem could be solved by adding a little safety to the process.
Problem: Hitting the Caps Lock key accidentally while trying to hit Shift or Tab.
Solution: Turn your Caps Lock into a key combination that requires holding down the Ctrl key (Ctrl + Caps Lock). That way, you would never press Caps Lock accidentally, because nobody accidentally mashes down both those keys at the same time. This would effectively disable the Caps Lock key unless you're damn sure you want to use it, which is fairly rare (at least for polite people).
Problem solved. You're welcome. Now, back to work, slaves! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3caps lock get's turned off when you reboot. pay attention.
- conro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$man xmodmap
- djhifisi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4* You’ve accidently pushed the key at least a thousand times.
--- I don't remember ever hitting it accidentally. (on my Dell it's about 2/3 the size of my shift key)
* YOU CONTINUE TYPING FOR ABOUT 10-30 SECONDS BEFORE YOU REALISE IT’S ON.
--- I touch type looking at the screen so would see IT straight away.
* You have to retype the whole sentence (You don’t have a convert-to-lowercase macro).
---Usually I'm writing in Word so shift+F3 toggles caps anyway.
I don't understand why there is a need to change the caps lock key at all... - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know this is digg, but this is by far one of the most geekiest articles I've seen on here.
- kampfy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The presence of exclamation marks in the title of this article is absurd. As though anybody out there is going, "FINALLY! Now I can have 50% more Control key productivity!"
- scootinger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Dell really needs to apply this hack by default on all of its computers. Then maybe people wouldn't think that TYPING IN CAPS IS COOL......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3++Diggs for KeyTweak!!
- Necho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is there a way for this to turn it into a Backspace key? It seems like a good space for one.
