- kzos, on 10/12/2007, -8/+127OpenWRT is new news since when?
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -5/+122$60 Router + $0 Firmware = $600 Router ???
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+83Seriously... how many times can this firmware make it to the front page?
- Filter, on 10/13/2007, -12/+66I think it's nice when we are reminded of things like this. Also, there are people that still don't know about it.
I'll digg it! - msnnbc123, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45i kinda like it when old stuff makes it up to the front page again.. gives a chance for people who haven't seen it to see it..
- chrismm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Firmware isn't the only thing that seperates a 6 dollar "Router" from a 600 dollar router. Marked as lame for hype.
- spr33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32I think he runs the site off his own hardware.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Yes...or remind people of something they may have seen earlier, but forgot about. Dupes aren't the end of the world - it's so easy for someone to ignore them if they aren't of interest.
- mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20@inflatable
you're also a skilled douche bag - tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21this is a pretty old dupe. great nonetheless.
- inflatable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16If by gay you mean feature packed and stable, then yes, DD-WRT is so gay.
HyperWRT is pretty lame cuz it's not really much of an upgrade over the stock Linksys firmware. Power boost, wow. Great feature. DD-WRT has that too. And it can run on many more routers than HyperWRT. Plus you can use DD-WRT it on v4 and v5 routers. Can't say that for HyperWRT. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Does it get any better?"
When someone finds out and puts a brick through your window. - hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19And its not even good
Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c is _ALOT_ more stable that this one - kris33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15He runs it on his modified router. :)
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -1/+11@bdpf
You could always disable wireless networking, and make it a wired-only router.
If you want to use a wired-only router, see if it's on this list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ddwrt
(didn't want to abuse the comment system with an long list...) - DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Some people READ the article before mindlessly mashing the digg button.
- macguy815, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Tomato firmware is the best... http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
It's based off of HyperWRT, but is actually still in development. The author also completely re-mastered the GUI of the router- very nice. - chrisvdmerwe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I've been running DD-WRT for more than a year and I highly recommend it. Rock solid and packed with features.
- Thinker2501, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17I ran this firmware for 3 months. It proved to be unstable and had a detrimental effect on the speed of my LAN as well as network connection. I wouldn't use this stuff.
- simplisticton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Ahh Digg... like Groundhog Day, only less funny.
- thinairbikes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have a WRT54G with DD-WRT running on it. I don't see how it can compare to a $600 router. Software is nothing without proper hardware to run it. The hardware in the WRT54G isn't really all that fast, especially once you start using it for high throughput VPN and QoS. For people at home with a couple computers connected the internet, it's more then enough, but even in a small office with maybe 5-10 computers (where a $600 router would be used) you'll definitely start to see issues with bandwidth and such.
I personally use pfSense at home on an $80 PC (1GHz, 256MB ram, 1GB HDD), I can compare that to a $600+ router. - B-o-K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7DD-WRT? Used it 2 weeks... Today I prefer Tomato, about which I posted over 2 months ago here on Digg...
http://digg.com/software/Tomato_Yet_another_firmware_for_WRT54G_but_so_different - webbsk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Oh for heaven's sake! Everybody with half a brain knows that gay has more than one meaning. Take your PC BS somewhere else.
And anyways, I'm pretty sure my router is bi. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7try running a hotspot with it..
then it crashed on me all the time. - notanumber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7With the factory firmware and QoS enabled, my VOIP was choppy as hell when running Bittorrent. The WRT54G would also randomly drop my net connection which pissed me off to no end.
After I installed this firmware, not only has VOIP been crystal clear, I haven't lost my net connection once.
Plus, it has a lot more features then the standard firmware does and allows you to fine-tune your QoS.
You can't beat the price. Heck, I'd even recommend donating since it's well worth it, I think. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A sledgehammer? Worked for mine...
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11http://www.duggmirror.com already?
Only 28 diggs... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6looks cool but still pretty buggy
i like just about any other firmware besides for dd-wrt
once they filter out the bugs it will b excellent.
but otherwise i would rather have the stock firmware than dd-wrt
at least that didnt kill my lan at inconvenient times throughout the day. - lobsang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Tons.
You have full control over the router. You can VLAN your ports, you can bridge them. You can have the router as a bridge, as an AP or a router. You can run openvpn on it, creating tunnels on-the-fly. You can create a VLAN and have your own DMZ. The possibilities are endless. - kdubbz6688, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7yes this works, but the hardware is limiting the performance of your router
- ray023, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I realize this is old news, but what kind of features does it offer for the occasional surfer, gamer player, and bit torrent downloader (linux distros of course)?
- chongli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The options for configuring QoS in dd-wrt are pretty amazing. I've had bittorrents saturating my connection and was able to play War3 with pings of < 30ms.
- dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More accurately, it allows you assign static ip addresses to specific mac addresses on your DHCP network. Reason enough to use it over a stock Linksys firmware.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like dd-wrt but I hate to see anyone else around me with a WPA wireless network with the SSID name of "dd-wrt".. I get a little paranoid, I prefer to see open networks with SSIDs like "Linksys", "netgear".
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You mean like Linux and FTP and....oh wait....these already do that. Reading is good.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Isn't the processor on there a little slow to be using it as a full fledged router? I mean for one or two computers I would imagine it's fine.
I only ask because I had a wifi router that didn't have as much throughput as I thought it should have had and discovered the processor in it was really pokey. - markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's funny, I thought you had to spend $540 to make a $60 router a $600 router. Oh well.
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What functionality does it add?
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> This firmware disables the reset button
Brilliant. [shaking head] - Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I prefer HyperWRT myself
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not the same concept. some people out there have a cap on their broadband, you assmonkey
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for sponsoring jerkoffs...
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The WRT54G has a colorful history. It's a great example of what happens when the GPL is enforced and manufacturers open their platform. Everybody wins. This is a good read:
http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3562391 - popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Been using it for a while. All I have to say is "Fifty dollar VPN router."
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$6 router? That's pretty cheap!
- pengas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4cmon man, nothing personal against you here...
just a figure of speach...
for example - your comment is gay - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or http://duggmirror.com//mods/Turn_your_60_router_into_a_600_router_FOR_FREE/plain.html if referrer is blocked/disabled.
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've also been told around the block that Henry Ford has made a motor carriage of sorts!
- doxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Zebra and Quagga are great, but I was hoping to see some of those features included in this release. A $600 router should support OSPF, I understand that this firmware update is _free_ however by no means would it be worth $600 without more advanced features, that was my point.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ive been running OpenWRT on my D-Link G604T for a few months now. Its been running fine, no bugs for me. Maby the 2.4 AR7 port is more stable, unfortunately wireless on this model isn't supported yet and its not an easy install (main problem was the MDT partitioning information was changed in a more recent firmware so the script etc wouldn't run), theres supposedly a 2.6 kernel being developed for AR7 and wireless but its been in development for a while.
D-Link had some major problems (Webmin wouldn't work in Firefox fully and it would start dropping packets when Bittorrent was running for a few days) with its firmware so OpenWRT was a useful replacement. D-Link have apparently fixed the Bittorrent problem in newer firmware though (At least the Australian version). -
