- spookyttws, on 10/26/2007, -8/+187What a find! And only 4 years after everyone already did it.
- numsix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+68Wow welcome to 2005! :)
Seriously, an XBOX with XBMC is a mighty thing. You can play virtually any video format, only choking on HD due to processor limitations. There's also emulators out for everything meaning you can play virtually any game up until say the PSX/N64 era (once again due to processor limitations). It's like taking the media extender from the 360 and the virtual console from the Wii and multiply that by about 5 million on the usefullness scale.
You can also upgrade the hard drive pretty easily on your xbox once you softmod it if you google for a tutorial.
Nice stuff! - CrossfireCurt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+67I did this over the summer... one of the best things I've ever done.
- Gamester17, on 10/10/2007, -0/+43Cool, but don't get the now old 2.0.1 (FINAL) point-release version. Instead download the latest SVN build of XBMC instead. New SVN binary builds by T3CH comes out about once a week, just google "T3CH XBMC" and it's the first hit you get (so you can go ahead and use the 'I feel lucky' search in google). T3CH build are also the only supported builds on xboxmediacenter.com community forums.

XBMC is not Unix-based (or Linux based or *BSD based). There are efforts to port XBMC to run on Linux and free it of its Xbox constraints, but XBMC on Xbox has nothing to do with *nix (other than using some opensource applications and libraries in its code base). - chupaCabra, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35As a father of a 3 1/2 year old that loves to watch movies and cartoons. this is a must! gone are the days of scratched DVD's. just rip them into Xvid and play them (100 times) locally or from the network.
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31i modded mine back in '03 but jesus, look at all you people coming back in here to throw this in everyone's faces who had never heard of this before. i think some help and support goes a lot longer way than a 'pfft, old news'
- whorelock, on 10/26/2007, -0/+25XBMC is hands down the best piece of XBOX software period! It plays just about everything.
- hark659, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21ooh it's soo old, well I didn't see it before and so is some other people. Shut up geeks :P
Just about to sell my xbox for garage sale tomorrow, now I changed my mind because I'm going to try this out. - mweels, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18As old as this is, My XBMC still sits in my cabinet and nothing can touch it right now.
- kippjon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17amen to that
- m00gg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20Sweetness... time for another modding project!
What a fantastic How-To from LifeHacker!!! - heathuff23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12amen to that my friend!!!! My daughter just turned 3 and this is a life saver...this is pretty old news though but xbmc is a parents best friend
- veriix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Wait, is this article implying that there are still xboxs that don't have XBMC?
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I've been using XBMC for about 3 years now and I can't recommend it enough. I use a linux file server that I download any video files to and have XBMC configured to read a samba share on it to play the files. Only problem I ever have is when trying to play h.246 files, I just don't think the xbox is powerful enough because no matter what options I select it always comes out a bit jumpy.
- joel2600, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11the hard drive in your xbox is just the same as any ide hard drive attached to the pc making the cost the same. sometimes it's nice to have that extra space on the box itself so you can give it to other friends, or if you want to keep a catalog of games at your fingertips rather than searching for discs. also, vista box? you could run any windows operating system or linux or mac and still share the files to be easily streamed to XBMC.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Should've, eh? A co-worker of mine just found out about this through this article on digg. The internet is not a competition.
- SadBeef, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9xbmc changed the way i watch movies. it's 4 years old and still better than any similar product on the market, and that is absolutely ridiculous.
- Nerfdude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12welcome to 2003, guys. hope you enjoy your stay.
- theworldisflat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9XBMC didn't even exist until late 02. Xbox released in Nov of 2001
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7In addition if you like the Xbox 360's interface you may want to check out MC360 to go along with those T3CH releases:
http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/ - joel2600, on 10/16/2007, -1/+8if the xbox is only playing the video, it's not acting as a DVR in any sense of the acronym. it's acting as the video player, playing a video file, which could be anything. the PC is acting as the DVR
- berfmurret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i bought an xbox just to have xbmc a month or so ago. best $150 i ever spent (i just put in an 80gb for emus and backups). the mc360 skin is THE skin to use. not just because it looks like the 360 dashboard but because it was the most logical to me... and has the most features right on the surface. some of the homebrew scripts ( www.xbmcscripts.com ) don't always work 100%... but when they do it is a beautiful beautiful thing.
- Gerz1219, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You mean the one they only announced like a month ago?
It takes more than a month to move a complex piece of software to an entirely different platform. - hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"Transform Your Classic Xbox into a Killer Media Center"
Can't you just use the all-spark? - bilton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I did this about 2 years ago and all I tell you that it's pretty awesome. You can also download scripts which allow you to do stuff like watch youtube videos, check sports scores and watch diggnation with the revision3 script all on your TV
http://www.xbmcscripts.com/ - AlanOrozco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No way! Really! I can't believe it!
- berfmurret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6upgrading the HD was definitely harder for me than installing xbmc. it took me 10 minutes to get xbmc loaded.. it literally took me a weekend (off and on through each day to ease frustrations) to get the hard drive to work.
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The svn builds are the latest and greatest that is out they are not to terribly diffrent from the 2.0.1 as of know but the don't do stable builds often enough and you end up getting really out of date software that doen't work as good as it should if you stay with the stable instead of getting the latest. http://t3ch.yi.se/ releases the semiofficial weakly builds and they are what most people use also you cant use the xtv skin on the stable build http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-V2_wWdwDk
- gdog05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If no one hasn't posted it yet, I believe this is an excellent how-to: http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html
and Eric and crew do a great job answering install questions. Great for the noob especially. - louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Agreed. I never even touched a soldering iron before I bought a $5 one from Radioshack and $25 modchip (about 3 years ago). It was extremely simple and cheaper than the game exploit solution. I also upgraded the hard drive while I was in there. I'm glad I did, because the dvd drive on the box now only works about 5% of the time.
- heathuff23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5well thats great advice!...if this topic was about a 360...but ummmm...its not...and plus with a modded xbox you can rip the movies right to the hdd...I have a 250gig HDD I use for movies and game iso's
- hoowahman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah definitely find the latest T3CH builds. I believe they are on the web now and can be found at xbox-scene.com. The dev effort that goes into XBMC is crazy tons of great stuff..i especially like the apple movie streaming script that comes with T3CH over 1600 trailers to choose from with show time integration in your area built in.
- rinks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5There's been a softmod way to do it since 2003? I don't think so, which is the crux of the article you didn't bother to read.
- nonsequitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I just wish it had more horse power. The CPU isn't fast enough to keep up with 720P quality video files, though the original XBOX is capable of outputing at 720P and 1080i.
- carl689, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wow, nothing is wrong with modchips you just have to buy a decent one that can be disabled. Mod Chips, such as Xecuter 3, even prevent you from signing on to Xbox live accidental. Mod Chips such as these are IMPOSSIBLE for Microsoft to detect due to the fact when they are disabled your Xbox is functioning %100 as a normal Xbox. Also the ability to FTP directly into a modchip has helped me fix quite a few FRAGing Xbox's.
P.S. Mod Chips and their Harddrive capabilities are also a godsend - screwzluse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What's the difference between the two? Just opinion or is there a large improvement between the 2.0.1 release and the T3CH builds? Just curious
- dephrye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Forgot to mention it, there IS an opensource version of it for XP (using .NET UGH!) http://www.team-mediaportal.com/download.html . Not quite the same but it's a start. I agree with the earlier poster, I've never used any program as good as XBMC for media, and that's just ***** insane, nothing else has even really come close for me.
- gateway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't forget these guys are porting XBMC to Linux right now so anyone that doesn't have a old xbox or wants more power to play 720p 1080p shows that are being encoded you might want to start looking at that direction... of course its still in dev but a lot of things are working.
- shibbyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Soft modding is, no joke, one million times easier than that.
- akiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't forget that XBMC will also up-scale to 720p/1080i and output audio through an optical cable - you just need the advanced AV pack for £10. It makes my recorded TV shows look just as good as DVDs, and DVDs much better :).
- jeepnut24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Nothing is stopping you from using a larger HDD in the Xbox using XBMC.
- gta95, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I just used the exploit and installed it that way. I think XboxHDM has a way to softmod it by pulling the drive, but you would have to do it on the stock drive first, so you could pull the HDD Key.
- xtlosx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I hate to repeat what every single poster said, but ya old, and I did this back in '04... But it is awesome... Using SMB you can have access to terabytes of media, and never have to leave your couch... it's a beautiful thing.... XBMC is a lovely piece of software too, simple enough to use so when people come over, they can navigate around as well.... just keep them out of the pr0n section!
- nonsequitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The CPU is not powerful enough. I'm waiting for PS3MC after the linux port of XBMC is completed.
- nonsequitor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yup, its built on the XDK, which is one of those legal grey areas. You have to look in some pretty interesting places to find that to do a build from source. And it's not in the usual places like xbins.
- djAnakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've added Xecuter mod chip and XBMC, and bigger hard drives to 7 xbox's in the past two years. I use it to view movies and listen to music i've got stored on my PC. Nothing else compares.
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The latest builds support automatic downloading of TV show information (including banner graphics, DVD cover art, show information, show screenshots, etc). They also support the "new" style of user interface (including xTV, the Apple iTV lookalike). There's several new view modes for most stuff, including "coverflow" like views of most everything. Most user scripts from xbmcscripts only work on SVN releases as well, now. Oh, and the SVN releases are a whole heck of a lot faster.
Really, there's no reason to run the old 2.01. The latest SVN releases are better in every way. Google for "T3CH" to find them, no need to resort to #xbins for that. - cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3While joel2600 is correct, this is the exact setup I have aat home. I have a PC running Snapstream Beyond TV recording my shows and stream them to XBMC over wireless and it works flawlessly. My XBMC is running the bladed 360 theme and looks very nice and plays anything.
- rinks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because this involves strictly software, no hardware modding necessary.
