- frankietears, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"(this happened after appr. 30 minutes of cranking and several attempts of my ipod to boot in between but not succeeding in that)"
Umm.... - eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow the usb battery thing is very simple, im really going to have to give that a try (especially since ill just have to replace a dead 9v instead of my 40$ cell phone battery, woohoo!!!!)
can you say ultraportable thinkpad powered by 22 D cell batteries, HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!!!! - mistermark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>If the link worked, I would probably digg it.
I changed DNS-servers a few weeks ago, but I heard some more people having trouble accessing my page... Anyways, in that case the IP-number works too...

I wouldn't mess around with that personally. Especially on an investment like the ipod. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though I don't own nor like Ipods, this sounds like a very cool article. If the link worked, I would probably digg it.
- SpookyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im Sorry...Are We Actually Moving Down The Technology Chain? WTF!!! What Is This, How To Survive A Nuclear War With Your Ipod 101? Jesus Christ!
- brosner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what an excellent idea. that really does make it perfect for road trips. listen to music while working out. haha
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now we just need a solar powered iPod charger and everything will be perfect.
- Thebigman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. Now take it to the next step and construct a larger generator! v:P
- schwieb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm too lazy. Guess I'll just wait for the solar charger.
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THIS IS GOLD
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't a generator just a motor? You could probably buy a suitable motor for cheaper than that flashlight and attach a handle.
- xVern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ Lay off the shift button, dude.
Anyway, this is sweet. +Dig - DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For some reason I imagined the 'hand cranked flashlight' was one of those that have a clear tube as a case, and you can see the electronics inside, and to charge it, you have to shake it up and down, causing a metal weight with magnets inside to move up and down near coils of wire to induce a current, charging the small battery. Works good, but looks like you are playing with yourself. Doing that for 30 minutes to charge an iPod would be tough to do.... wait... no it wouldn't. I forgot most people with iPod's do that several times a day anyway, they are probably pretty adept at it. Hell, get a half dozen geeks in a room with generators shaped like that flashlight, and they could light a small city.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, theres a (vaugly) similar thing someone developed for charging a phone, that uses a wire-coil in a ring, and has a magnetic ball, when the ball moves about (when your walking) it's charging the phone up.. Pretty cool idea I thought (Since phones are mostly moving about, or if not, theres a plug near by most times), sure, it'll take several weeks of running to get the battery fully charged, but for an little longer battery life from walking, seems an okay idea, and all you need is a plastic hoop (Small thing), a metal ball and a feck load of thin wire..
Hmm, maybe a similar thing could be done with those wind up radios? But I'm sure they use lower voltages
- Ben - Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I like it, but cranking away for 30 minutes? I would hire a
homeless person to crank it for me WHILE I listen to some
tunes! Shoot, say $5 for 30 minutes of cranking? That's more
then the minimum wage! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, sounds like a good thing....for someone else to try....
- ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got one of those hand crank cell phone chargers, you gotta crank the thing furiusly for 2 minutes just to get 30 minutes of standby, let alone making a call. Considering how long my ipod takes to charge, sheesh.
I digg, but because of the effort this guy went to, not because of its practicality - dig-dug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! now you can listen to your prince albums after the Apocalypse hits.
- thodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice idea, and Death from above 1979 RULES!
- Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe the spining of a yo-yo? Solar baseball cap?
- SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, they sell solar chargers at the Apple store... It looks pretty sweet. :P
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=TC272LL/A - cjurczak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats an aweful lot of work just to listen to some music...maybe this would be better suited for use with a less current demanding device, like a solid state player...but its cool that it works period, and will all usb devices...
- modbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im suprised cell phones and iPods dont contain the same technology as kinetic watches, charging itself up as you move around, sure its not gonna replace the battery, but im sure it would make it last longer before a full charge.
- ieatnoobs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Ure a noob gamer.
