- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48This isn't steampunk. This is steam powered. Steampunk means, built using only materials they had around the golden age of steam locomotives.
As in, an R2D2 made of wood, with coal lamp lights and steam powered wheels. None of this white fancy plastic. - gormenghast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Someone has found a way to power droids without midgets!
This is a giant step in humanity's endeavor to attain Star Wars-level technology. - KeefTM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Maybe the server is running off a steam boiler as well...
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I agree with with most of you, this isn't the droid we're looking for.
- SigmaDraconis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You mean these?
http://ericpoulton.blogspot.com/search/label/steampunk%20star%20wars - andritchie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Now I know why R2 makes that crazy steam whistle noise when being tossed about in the films.
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Agreed, not steampunk
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you're interested in building a full sized R2-D2, visit http://www.astromech.net/
Thought I should post some info considering my username is r2builder. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'd pay to see that movie.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is not stupid. Steampunk shows us a different world in the golden age of human invention, where adventure, scientific exploration and technological achievement were more important and thrilling than petty industrial purposes. You have humans exploring the available technology in fantastic, inspiring ways.
It's fun, awesome and inspiring. It's a tribute to human creativity and control over the laws of physics. It's ***** beautiful! - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Somebody link to the starwars steampunk pics.
- troublemaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5s/steampunk/steam powered/;
- catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Also, many would take issue with the description, "fully functional." The real R2-D2 had rockets and frickin' laser beams, as well as a moble emitting holographic projector, a blow torch, an adaptive digital link that could interface with non-proprietary as well as proprietary hardware, and a little circular saw.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Who says its proprietary hardware? The empire might have been using approved Open Source standards on the death start and moon base.
- GSVNoFixedAbode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In space, no one can hear you steam
[ducks] - loquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah I can see your point, but as the Romans used to say, "there is no disputing tastes" (De gustibus non est disputandum). The reason I like Steampunk, Clockworkpunk, and Sandalpunk is that they reflect a past that might have been but wasn't and imply a future that might be but isn't. I really digg how ingenious people were back in history regardless of whether or not it was "punk." Give a look at the show "Engineering and Empire" and the show about old Chinese technology and automation and tell me that some of the stuff in "steampunk" and "clockwork punk" was that impossible. The Victorians had a communication system that could take a telegraph from New York directly to the desks all over London using pneumatic brass tubing. You could literally send a message to England and receive an answer back in minutes. If that doesn't cause you to start imagining "what if..." I don't know what will.
What if Universities world-wide back then had been connected via telegraph and piping, and people could ask questions and get answers from the greatest minds in second? How long would it have taken to develop nuclear energy? How long for a bomb? How long for technology to leap forward to today's standards? What kind of style would it be?
Sorry for going on and on about this, but wow, what would today's world look like? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But can it pop out hidden jet packs and fly around... oh wait that was totally lame.
Original R2 for the win. This R2 is pretty slick too. - loquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I agree, I'd love to see a brass and wood robot body to call this steampunk. However, it is really impressive. I digg clockwork stuff and could really see this being a cool project. I always pictured R2D2 steampunk as looking like a brass still on wheels. In fact if this little R2 unit were brass and were able to pee moonshine, I'd have to get it.
- lothar250, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this thing is gonna burn someones crotch real bad sometime
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the midget union might not like that.
- crabfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey guys, Crabfu here, the maker of this R2S2
This is by far the geekiest thing that I have ever done! but I think you guys are taking it a bit further into geekdom by having such a big discussion over the whole steampunk thing around it :) It's a silly project, you can love it or hate it, but to debate over it, lol!
I make steam powered stuff for a hobby, and I get a lot of people arguing over if these can be called robots, or steampunk etc. I personally don't care if you call them either or, I'm just an artist..... But hardcore steampunk and robotics guys are usually the ones who first coined them - Brass Goggles, RoboGames etc. But who really cares? the whole reason for doing any of these steam contraptions is to do something a bit different, and absolutely absurd :)
And yeah.... stupid idea of the "steam too" name eh? Well after you've made a bunch of steam "bots", it's sort of an inside joke, that R2 is steam too. The name may have taken it too far, but then again, the whole idea of making a steam powered R/C R2D2 is just down right stupid in the first place :) I dunno, It fits with the corny world of starwars anyway.
By the way, My girlfriend and I are huge diggnation fans! Just wanted to say that in case Kevin & Alex are reading this :)
-Crabfu - crabfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks, and no.... YES it would be awesome, and I would LOVE to do it... if I could!
I don't have the skills that you think that I have, or else I'd made R2 completely made out of brass with wood inlays, bigger and more powerful boiler/engines, and with all the bells and whistles - literally :)
I hack stuff together, I don't make much of anything, I only make use of what I can get a hold of and convert them to steam, as you can see with the rest of my steam contraptions: www.crabfu.com/steamtoys/
-Crabfu - musicmanryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesnt go very fast
- dxprog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's awesome and all, but can it move forward or does it just turn?
- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn you! You made me think that Eric Poulton had put a new picture on his blog.
http://ericpoulton.blogspot.com/search/label/steampunk%20star%20wars - garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1giant black rod sticking out of its head. Good choice to film at night :-P
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your mind powers will not work on me boy.
- crabfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess I just had mostly turns in the original video since watching it go slowly forward is pretty painful. But I made a new video anyway, just to prove that it "can"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n9Y4cs5jM0
(I think I can I think I can......)
-Crabfu - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I happen to like the name, and awesome work.
But I do have to ask: any chance of redo-ing the body in wood and brass? it would look insane... - andritchie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with catmistake, it's not fully functional until it can sprout rockets and take out two super battle droids.
- Spacetop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The COOLEST useless thing I've ever seen!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yes you are, because it's awesome. Why do I know nothing of this art?
- wssharp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1and how much does he want for it?
- Destroytoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This needs more wood panels.
- ikrit2006, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1If this wasn't f*cking awesome, I would have buried it for messing up the name... "R2-S2 (R2 Steam Too)"...
- d3vmax, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Are you planning to sell it?
My friend could interview you at http://liveandbeyond.com if you like..
Great project! keep it up... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Actually, thats a hacksaw blade being dragged across dry-ice.
Also, since when the hell did R2 have faux wood paneling?? - TheMoB666, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Nice article and images wer can I bye one of them?
I think is a really good work.
Cheers The MoB
http://www.kiwicollection.com - n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Man, R2 is such a l33t h4xor.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2I'm going to get Dugg down, but I just have to get this out there.
Steampunk is stupid. It's ugly, tasteless, and not appealing in any way.
