- jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -10/+76I like the reverse lookup of who owns a cell phone much better. Had a guy steal my cell at the beach. He called me from his cell to try and get a reward. $20 wasn't enough. He said he was going to call every contact in my phone and harass them. I used reverse lookup and got his address. Then set my computer to send 1,000 faxes to his cell phone and also to his poor neighbors. The whole neighborhood was calling me from alternate phones and asking why them. I said go make him return it. He did. It was a small victory in my otherwise loser life.
- Gryffydd, on 10/11/2007, -16/+50I thought this was going to be a link to http://www.phonetrace.org for a minute
Warning: Very, very NSFW - strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29This doesn't seem to know anything about the new area codes the Minneapolis area got 7 years ago. That's really hampered my stalking ability.
If the website operator is curious:

- staser9er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19My home phone worked, but most people use cell phones these days, and that's a different story.
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I located your IP and did some social engineering. I'll call you in a few after I take my meds.
- Nupeper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13now was that really necessary?
- meista, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16What did the neighbors have to do with your phone theft? I'd have reverse looked you up - and I wouldn't be sending faxes, my friend.
- zeromancer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10it was a good try. A for effort.
- DevinOlsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Good god no...
My eyes - jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I just so much did not need to see that gay sex. I feel assaulted.
- deacont23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Its database is OLD!
It did not know about my area code that changed in 1999. - quaff, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8where did you go to reverse lookup someone's cell phone number?
- escheppa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You've seen it you can't unsee it!
- fpcyber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Good one. To bad most of it sounds like bs.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It's much easier to stalk people here in Sweden. If I have someone's phone # I can just enter it into one of many online phone directories and find out their name and adress, for free.
It's taken screening to a whole new level for me. - skippyatuw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Now that's funny, albeit ***** gross as hell.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You can do that in the US too unless you choose to have your number unlisted.
- RasterBurn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5But did you fax goatse?
- Jade10145, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Went to Phonetrace.org...completly got pwned, at work...I wish the comment that said phonetrace.org was NSFW had been up a little higher in the comment posts...I blame digg for this (jk)..damn it
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It seems to just locate the central office for the number. Dslreports has done this forever. http://www.dslreports.com/coinfo
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4*burns eyes*
- TheSabre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not even close. That's why I picked my own number with Vonage....
- zeromancer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You got me this time gryff. but it will never happen again!
- TheKricket, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6i was just browsing digg today - but i decided to log in just to digg that one down
- billmccartney, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6parent is VERY NSFW

- Gryffydd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Another fun one to get your friends with is http://www.mugseek.com
That one just shows a video of a guy sucking himself off, so it's a bit less scarring. - Elias1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's a weird feeling when a webpage gets dugg to death while you're using it.
I feel like looking up to the sky and yelling "WHYYYYYYYYYY!" like they do in the movies when someone dies in the arms of another. - seattle98104, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2too bad most people use cellphones now where location pretty much doesn't apply.
/still hanging on to his 360 number even thought been living in 206 for 2 years and have no plans on giving it up. - tlgjames, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Not even close on 3 home lines.
- drbadass, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3yeah not so good, tracked an austin number to corpus christi.
but other than that, CUTTING EDGE! - melenko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why did I let it keep going even after the map was clearly wrong??!?!??!?!
- jdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Cool? Sort of...
Accurate? not rly...
Point? I dunno - iseth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Okay, this one is safe: http://fonefinder.net/
I've been using it for a long time. It doesn't plot it on a map, but it tells you which carrier owns the prefix, plus if it was originally for land lines or cellular lines. Of course, due to number portability, you can take a land line prefix and move it to cellular and vice versa, but still, it's quite useful. - rauz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Huh? Wtf are you on about?
- psyjoniz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2too bad the area code my phone has came from thousands of miles away. thank you, number portability.
- srosebush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Pretty close for all the numbers I tried, both in Canada and the US. Neat.
- doubleblack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ya, this site is slow as *****...
Some people are saying it's a couple of miles off, maybe up to even 30. You are most likely in a more rural area - the more urban of an area you live in - the more accurate it will be. It displays your CO (Central Office) of the prefix you are giving it, the more rural the area is - the less CO's there are to cover an even wider area. You can do better with http://www.anywho.com or any other site providing a reverse lookup function ;) - javascriptdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well I live in the area and it worked for me.
- LANjackal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The fact that a lot of people nowadays use cellphones with nationwide plans and live WAAAY out of their home area code, as well as the rise of VoIP, limit the use of this tool. At least you can see where the number was registered. But you're not likely to be anywhere near the actual origin of the call.
- hayden.evans, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1not even close
- trunkster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The iPhone does this automatically, no need to look it up.
- bakednstoned, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ummm.... Useful feature. Been done already. Anyone want to make their own?
check it: http://www.nanpa.com/reports/reports_cocodes_assign.html
This gives you the company, ratecenter, and switch for the phone number in question. Some pay for lists will mark which are cellphone carriers vs land line and who the is the managing telco for that ratecenter. As well as lat and long for where the switch is located. The ratecenter name is usually the major city in that ratecenter and on top of that, the switch name breaks down to the city the switch is in.
Granted, Cellphone and voip are going to render this tool less accurate, especially with phone number porting.
other sites that may be of interest if you want to make something similar:
http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/downloads
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLLI_code
http://www.qwest.com/wholesale/systems/WebHelp/Circuit_ID_Format_Tutorial.htm
Now, if you have lat and long and know of a mapping program that takes that info you can get a nice map, but what is more important is the ratecenter the phone number is in and their local calling area (as local is not always just the ratecenter and the numbers in it)
This and a few other tools / databases and you can do a decent job of tracking things. No, I am not a stalker, but identifying what numbers are local for what areas has been a hobby of mine. Sure you can pay for a tool that does it, but the info is out there if you want to look.
Also another thing you will want is a map showing ratecenter boundries and the telcos that operate the ratecenter. these are also generally free. if you can get it to work as an overlay on your map that has the counties, major cities, and major roads, I envy you because I am not to that point yet.
Any questions? - JeremyCouch, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1Must be using really old data.
- kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just google "NPA/NXX lookup". Unfortunately an exchange (NXX part) can serve more than one geological area. For example, 401-72x can serve Pawtucket, North Providence, Lincoln, and Central Falls, RI.
Zip codes, especially Zip+4 are much more granular. - petereality, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1h8 u
