- cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+229Not necessarily. Who do you think will be changing the locks when people decide to buy new ones that protect against this?
PS. I'm glad people like this come forward. Security through obscurity is no security at all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_through_obscurity - dubbin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+141@phenolholic: on the down side, anyone that lives like that is almost certainly a deeply unpleasant person with a personality disorder.

291 days ago - phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -22/+120ahh screw it. my house is usually unlocked. if your car can jump over a 6 foot concrete wall (my gate), not get eaten by my pitbulls, not trigger the monitorered security system, and not end up dead when i introduce you to my "little friend" in a drawer next to my bed, then you deserve to steal my stuff. it's ok, i have insurance.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+81Does anybody know of an affordable electronic locking system with keycards for home use?
- Royal0rleans, on 10/12/2007, -5/+79One more thing--Before all the 1337 lock pickers out there call me on this--This isn't brand new, lock pickers have known about this for a while, this is essentially the same principle behind a snap gun. But it is news in the sense that many don't know about this.
Time to ditch your cheap kwikset locks. - Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69salsaman, i'm flagging you as a retard.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+55Glad I don't have anything worth stealing.
Except this MacBook. - mrnonrespondo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50I think you mean Z Netherlanders?
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44"You can make a bump key (also known as a '0000 key', or just '0 key', because all it's protrusions are at their lowest possible preset level) by filing down a normal key"
You mean '9999' or just '9' as the level is not the height but the depth, 9 being the deepest or 'shortest'.
"Note: I am not a locksmith."
No, you obviously aren't. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -12/+48works out well that you dont have anything worth stealing then
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42If the insurance company wont pay it, lock urself out of the house and kick the door in. Or, break a back window with a brick, smash out a pane and climb into your house before they get there.
- trieste, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37People will go to him to buy mortice locks. Cunning!
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38"Glad I have a Glock." - no problem, they'll be glad to steal that too.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36or maybe even Z Dutch.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35We have a security system, we live in the middle of nowhere, even mapquest throws up its hands and goes "where the ***** is that?" Then again, if you asked mapquest where the white house is it would give the same answer...
- Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Disc tumblers (the most common lock type where I live) can't be opened with this method. However with some (or lot) practise and correct tools they can be opened too.

Buy your own set, a little expensive tho - KampfGherkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30It's so easy, you can try this yourself. So before flagging it as innacurate, perhaps you should try it out before commenting?
- redwire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Bumping has been around for a long time.
You need a set of 999 keys (which is simply a key that will fit into the lock cut down to its maximum in a key-cutter) and the end filed down a touch to allow wiggle room and a mallet preferably rubber to do it but it is a very simple trick that works on any pin tumbler lock which is most house and business locks.
The speed you do it with is exaggerated in this clip even the best usually take 30+ seconds to do it because what you are doing is using the shock of hitting the key to move the pins all the way up for a fraction of a second and while they are up turning the key and they rarely go all at once at the right level, its luck and it takes a little bit of time but not alot.
The only mass market locks I know of it that is not susceptible to it is from a company called abloy as they use disc tumblers instead of pins and hold a patent on DT's. And of course locks that don't employ keys. All of which can be beaten anyway which is why locks and safes are NEVER called unbeatable and in fact the rating system used for locks and safes is based on how long it takes on average to crack.
Long comment short nothing is completely safe in the real world anymore then in the online world, deal with it. - gooddoggytreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26That old guy is like a mechanical White-hat, way to go! :)
- scrubadub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26@cody50
Yeah I'm sure you still use skeleton keys because you never updated your locks. Security improves and I'm sure that locksmith has a few locks that a bump key will not work on.
@fletchowns
check this out for making your own RFID system, you can do something similar with mag readers if you're worried about RFID

- ceris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Bump Keys are rad and this is a solid Dig...
One problem is it makes out like you can walk around with a bump key and open any lock out there. The blank used to make the bump key does have to be from the same type of lock you're going to open..
(that said, there are some really common locks out there.. ) - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Locks are just to keep the “honest” people out. Only a man with a gun will do for thieves. Seriously; just ask any Russian.
- gothelder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22A picture of my ex wife hung on the door wearing only a thong should do it, of course your gonna have to get used to opening the door with your eyes closed, but the added bonus of witness and morman prevention should more than make up for the inconvenience.
And of course your only gonna be able to order delivery from any particular resturant only once, hopefully word wont get around. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20As a locksmith, I can tell you that this has been known for well over a year. It was even posted on HackADay on August 25th. Those of us "in the business" knew about it a long time ago.
Phil246 - Amateurs will commonly leave a mark on the locks, because they just grind down the key and do not pad it. If you look right above the keyhole, you can frequently see a small vertical line from bumping. - kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"...and not end up dead when i introduce you to my little friend in a drawer next to my bed..."
In Europe people would associate that to some kind of sex toy. Only in America you guys sleep with a gun next to your bed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+43Glad I have a Glock.
- Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27dubbin: Par for the course for Digg. :)
- MasterChi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I'm just curious but does this "bumping" also work on car locks ?? They dont mention it in the PDF or the videos so i'm curious because car door locks are like door locks, right ? Atleast in the basic concept they are, right ??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30Zed Germans?
Oh, you're saying "zee". I need to start reading Digg with an American accent. - kLacK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Its Up - Down - Up - Down - Left - Right - Left - Right - B - A - SELECT - START
- doctabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This is all covered within the video and PDF linked to at the end.
The idea is that many people have the same models, and if you have something like 10 bumpkeys, you're going to have a good chance of finding one out of a few you try. - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You can make them yourself if you have a key that fits in the keyway (doesn't need to be the proper cut). A few minutes with a dremel is all you need.

eBay: BUMP KEYS SET OF 5 POPULAR (item 130014349222 end time Aug-15-06 19:29:42 PDT) - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16martinus is wrong, why he is getting the thumbs up is beyond me. this is all irrelevant to the discussion anyway.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13My mistake. It is 9 for the lowest position, not 0. But it IS the lowest position, NOT the highest.
- dubbin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15this is making homeowners aware of the problem so they can do something about it, dumbass
- psyon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14A few months back, the toilet in the apartment above mine broke, and water was coming in through my ceiling. They people did not wake up when I was pounding on their door, and finally I decided to break it down. I was shocked at how easily I went through. The frame where the bolt lock holds just splintered out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18glad that you read the comments on youtube.
- JoeMenthol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If you get robbed and you're really concerned that your insurance won't cover it because there isn't any obvious sign of a break in, just take a second to bust out a window before you call the cops.
If someone wants to get into your house bad enough, given enough time, they're going to get in. Most locks are really only there to discourage entry, not prevent entry; 80% of the time you can bypass a locked door with nothing more than a solid kick. - PostaBoi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Wow.......
I think you'll have some time, the burgular will have to get over your mote first... - Sixxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Indeed old news (old tv broadcast even), and for some reason it never really got any followup in the media/politics/justice departments.
- goggleBOX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11you could always show all of your neighbours how easy it is to break into any of their apartments. I'm sure a whole building of people screaming at him will make him at least think about it... Or... you could just rob all of your neighbours
- w00d77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12One way to combat this attack may be to magnetize the top and bottom pins together. That way, simply bumping wouldn't be enough force to separate the pins. Using the correct key would align the pins in the tumbler allowing you to open the lock, albeit with a bit more turning effort to overcome the magnetism. I don't know. I'm not a lock expert by any stretch of the imagination.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"That guy's going to get rich off this."
Given his price will be set by demand, he'd have to have a lot of people eager to commit burglary for him to get "rich" off it. I don't think there are *that* many people browsing eBay thinking "this is a great place to get me some new burglary tools".
Edit: Heh, maybe I'm wrong huh. 100 sets of keys per day at $10 per set? And he can't make them fast enough? Guess there are a lot of would-be crooks out there. -
