- dstart, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Their server probably runs on an ipod with linux :P
- dougallj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Someday, yes. Today, I'm just happy with the Apple OS... And with it all working.
I almost totaly screwed up my nano trying something like this... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10wow. that is by far the dumbest coment i have ever seen.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9dude, what are you doing here? Diggers are stupid but they are predominantly geeks. Geeks are predominantly earl adopters.
why run Doom? Because YOU ***** can. That's why. - jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7podzilla 1 is perfectly usable
it works, it reads your music, it plays its own games, its perfectly stable, and idoom works
i doom is limited in that you can't back up or change weapons or reload.
podzilla2 is prettier and will be better but right now it is pretty much unusable
i have linux on my 4g ipod just so i can show people that when i restart holding the rewind button a bunch of red linuxy text goes on my screen. I can then play a short video clip... do the matrix screen thing, rotating cube, a couple other random games, space invaders, etc and of course the finale iDoom running the Half Life WAD - cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6and then go blind in 5 min playing it
- CrumbleBeeHaHa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I want to try it but I'm scared of ruining my new ipod...bookmarking the page just incase i grow some balls.
- Robstah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, it's good because it is open source, plays various formats like OGG, FLAC, and so on, and supports different themes as well. Good luck trying to get Apple to release themes like the inverted theme that is provided right now via iPodLinux.
I have used iPL for a while now. I think it will turn into something amazing, once "HotDog" is fully implemented. - mlvassallo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If a Linux user could run their microwave on Linux they would.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You cannot screw up your ipod using software!
You can always connect it to your computer in disk mode and repartition it manually, or reformat using the apple software. If it can't be fixed that way then it's a hardware problem and it's Apple's responsibility to fix it (under warranty). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5that is one uber scratched ipod
- skater2968, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm going to get bashed for saying it, but why do this? Currently the software is too buggy, and for the most part a waste of time to all but developers. Certainly not ready for the big time yet, so why all the commotion? isn't the most common reason for buying an ipod it's simple easy to use layout? Anyone can pick one up and immediately use it's features. Give the project another year of development and then I'll give it a try.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3It is impossible for iPL to "screw up" or "brick" your iPod. I talked to my local Apple center and they reassured me that anything done to the software side of the iPod that ruins it is warrantied. I even asked him about iPod Linux, and he said it would still be covered by warranty.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7is it really worth the effort of installing linux to show "cool matrixy text"?
- WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hey guys, you don't put linux on your ipod for the functionality of linux on an ipod. You do it because it's awesome that it can be done, especially since Apple so closely guards how their products work. Same reason people have ported linux to gameboy, cell phones, digital cameras, etc. Also, there's not much danger in trying it out, should you decide to do so. I've installed it a couple times on 3 and 4 gen iPods. Even if you do manage to mess it up (which I did, once), you can just run the iPod restore program (which is only available for Windows and Mac, though), and it'll be good as new. There are also ways to do an iPod restore without messing with the music on your iPod. Just a few thoughs. : )
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For audio lovers, Rockbox is a lot better. And its a heck of a lot easier to install too.
Gapless playback, 5-band EQ, background/wallpaper support, completely customizable themes, color changer, and yes, it has games too. (Via its ultra-extensible plugin system.)

Josh - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ipod Key - iDoom Action
----------------------------
Menu = Move forward
Back = Turn left
Forward = Turn right
Play/pause = Fire
Select = open door
Hold switch = menu
Yes, you cannot change weapons manually, but the game is VERY playable, I'm halfway through the doom 1 demo. - WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, I didn't know that. I do know it's a snap for gens 1-4, though.
- halter73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2C'mon you can start up the apple firmware or linux with a bootloader(almost like LILO or GRUB), you do not replace the apple firmware "just to play doom."
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Same reason a dog licks himself: because he can. It's kind of a cool thing to try. Yes, there are better ways to play handheld games, and there is a chance you brick your iPod, but some folks like to try.
I like the above. Liunx on a microwave, hehe. I'd make a joke about Linux on a toaster, but I think somebody has already done that. - l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You could simply reformat the unit from Disk Utility or via the Format command in Windows Explorer, then rerun the Updater to reinstall the OS.
- mattkelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried to run the Wikipedia on it, but overwriting with the Wiki version of Linux seems to get the load-up stuck in command line mode. Maybe the guy who made the automated Windows installer of the "Encyclopodia" will update it with the new video chip drivers.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Linux runs dual-boot on 5g's with Apple OS. It's fun to show to friends, or play Tetris on. Plus OGG support doesn't hurt.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 5th gen and playing doom is such a dumb reason to install Linux!
I would install it if more codec were supported or better performance, or maybe some way to have better performance. I'm not scared just sad this is the only advantage. - tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why ?
Its called hacking
There is no why. - 1337d00d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I fried mine doing something like this (3rd gen), and no reformatting didnt help,, had to send it back,, but the nice folks at Apple replaced it
- spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1any1 have a link to a nano linux install tutorial?
- NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i tried it out a while back with the autoinstaller they have and it screwed it up (i didnt read that the 5G iPod wasnt working yet). all i had to do was follow some simple instructions on how to reformat it and it was back to normal. so theres no real risk other than wasting a couple of mins because it didnt work.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1My mistake. With digg's new comment system it can make it harder to see things (my viewing threshold might have buried it). Sorry :)
- wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wait till we have wine for iPL
- linuxpunk81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone got it running on a 4G 60gig ipod photo? I just cant get the linux kernel to boot on it.
- Carv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The UCLinux confuses me. Also, the first file under "downloads" is gone.
- whiteV6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So dose my 5Gen iPod. It crashes about ever 40 min's
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bare in mind that it won't even work on all 5th Gens. There is a known issue that causes the kernel to hang on the boot process due to a certain chipset from what I know. So its not as easy as this guy leads you to blieve.
In other words, pain in the ass for some and not worth it. - duckedtapedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also its impossible to brick the ipod, apparently there is some form of diskmode firmware in ROM, so with with reformatting utilities and the ipod updater you can restore.
- l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You scroll right or left to rotate, click the wheel in a direction to move, and click the select button to shoot. Very nice, actually :)
- mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because it'll let you play video (who needs a video ipod anyways?).
- linnerd40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsome! And really not that difficult. Some may ask: But how well does it work? Is it worth it? I say HELL yeah. There is nothing cooler than running Linux on something. Ya know, soon they'll have linux hacks for every tech device out there! Super cool digg++
- Steerpike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I didn't see a link to anything about Doom on that page, so I assume it can run iDoom (http://idoom.hyarion.com/). Is it really functional, I mean how do move around with just a scroll wheel? In any case it seems pretty cool.
- jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2there is a super simple installer for 4g ipods. I'm not sure exactly where it is. Its somewhere on the ipod linux site... and yes doom does work on it. Then just look for the iDoom half life wad file. Half Life on your ipod.... cool to show to friends.
- acidburn85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Personally I think that one of the main reasons you buy the ipod is for the elegant interface the it has why would you want to replace it just to play doom?
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What the bloody hell? Why has this been buried?
- 1337d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same thing happened to me
- marshall030394, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Just a question dudes...1. is there a version for 5.5g apart from podzilla2 which is unusable atm, and 2 . is there an instuctive tutorial anyone knows of? the one on ipodlinux.com isn't very expansive for noobs at linux. I'v run knoppix off an iso disc. thats it..
- marshall030394, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0what are these cheaper ways? tell us all.
- nickisme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did this a few days ago on my 30Gb 3G ipod... after I'd installed the ipod wikipedia... bad idea. Nothing loads afterwards, and the only way to get back into the Apple ipod os is to change the sysinfo file to think that it needs an upgrade, and then reinstall the Apple ipod os again... sigh...
Tried it twice too... still couldn't get the thing to work... think i'll stick with the novelty of having Wikipedia on there instead. - tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah, I think the only reason that I would do this is to install the Wiki.
I'm all for iDoom, but I don't think I'd play it on my iPod. I already have a PSP if I want to play a game, and the screen is much bigger, and "better" (although that's probably debatable) controls for playing a game.
@mlvassallo
For the record:

- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I can get this working on my 5G iPod without much of a hassle, I'll try to write up a GUI for the installation.
- asraniel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works great here. i used the installer for 4g that is somewhere in the wiki. the installer is for windows
