- svidrod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14neat idea, but ugly execution.
- fr0z3nph03n1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I love the fact that its Ethernet controlled, there is so many possibilities with that. I wish there was more network controlled devices.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Server dieing already...

I sort of like the idea, however, would be awesome if the lights would turn colors according to the traffic over the network, such as, lots of traffic, darker colors, and fades to lighter as the traffic goes away, sort of thing :D - bobonot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Pretty cool, till you take a look at the total cost! $3,857.46
Almost 4 Grand for a desk lamp!?! What were they smokin' when they started that project?
Still, very cool lamp... I'll take two please! :-D

- complex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I hope the Lazyweb (read: Make and/or hackaday) puts together plans to build something similar for a lot cheaper.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yea, it looks like a prop from a bad sci-fi movie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Awesome, awesome Industrial Design. This is the bedside lamp that V-Dub- the guy from the VW commercials- would have beside his sleeping chamber, or over his drafting table.
ROCK ON.
Oh, and nice job not mentioning hackaday, tard. - pimpybra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sadly, this was one of the first things I noticed, and one of the major things I cared about.
It could be nicer looking, but it's not a horrible design. I'm not down with the design on that touch pad thinger on the base. - omegadan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What are you talking about it looks great! I would order one in a heartbeat if it were avaliable.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed. That's terrible industrial design.
- zigid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3don't feel too bad, I've seen like -70 on some posts already
- goat-san, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yeah, since i go to hackaday, its getting a little annoying that so many hack a day posts are posted here 2 days later, without any mention of where they got it from.
- TheAce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually I think we're going to see more of LED-based lamps. And that's a good thing: They hold out much longer without the need to switch the bulb and they draw much less power.
- darkmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what's so good about an ethernet LED lamp? 1000PCs Ultra Bright LEDs are only $60 now. An Ethernet control LED lamp is $3xxx?
and why not a Wi-Fi LED lamp? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um...is that price including the laptop? I can't believe anyone would seriously be stupid enough to offer a lamp at that price. Or developing one that would cost that much.
- WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2vernsan:
I believe he's saying he hasn't actually looked into how cheaply the supplies could be bought. He's obviously looked at the article, since he knows how much the guy spent on metal.
I was going to make a similar comment: over $1000 for LEDs?? When was this made? I could be wrong, but if ordered in bulk from the right place, can't you get them for a few cents a piece now-a-days, can't you? - SakisRakis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, if you look to the cost page the project cost the guy like $3800
- CellZer0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this lamp could be built for significantly less... I mean look at the parts list, In just raw aluminum plating the guy spent like $750, which I guess MIGHT be understandable if he sent them off to get milled. If he did the milling himself and looked at the right places he could get all of his aluminum for probably $120-$200ish. Next up is $1022.22 he spent on leds. Seriously though, are you telling me he spent just under $2 for each led? Alot of the other parts he used could have probably been ordered out of an MSC catalog or online for a good deal cheaper. Haven't actually looked but I will if I have to. Regardless thought, it is a pretty sweet project.
- DanaG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something a little more practical.
"Make LED Colour Changing Lights" ( http://www.emanator.demon.co.uk/bigclive/rgb.htm ); with schematics, pcb layout and source code.
Or if you absolutely need a LED flood lamp, "Make LED Flood Lamps" ( http://www.emanator.demon.co.uk/bigclive/rgbflood.htm ). - briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you buy a $3000+ lamp, an $8 can of compressed air would be the least of your money problems.
- zigid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the concept and the technical end of it, but the design is rather strange (sort of Borg crossed with Terminator) I would rather see a simpler design with perhaps only one shade. There's just too much extraneous cords, screws, grooved channels, etc. . . The price problem could be dealt with, I think, just looking at the price list. I don't think there was much effort made to reduce costs in this initial lamp.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, if i could buy one, i woud, but id put it in my case.... and get it to synck with my music so it would be like a fricking awesome light show.....
- SavannahLion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's nice and all, but I really need something that's easy to clean. Sounds strange, I know.
And no, compressed air wouldn't do it. It costs too much to keep buying cans of air and it would be really difficult to have a nice looking place with a compressor in the corner ;) - TheKnitting, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nice idea but ugly as hell
- endlessoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if anyone has seen the video, but it sells itself well. This lamp looks so awesome.
- zepequeno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3if i mention hack a day people get mad if I don't people get mad you ned to get a life!

http://digg.com/mods/Laser_listening_device - bobonot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to the parts list that price is just for the parts, not including labor, to build the lamp (laptop not included).
- yayaouou, on 06/01/2009, -0/+0good quality led modles from china , http://www.ledmodulechina.com
- cantoral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I did not expect such violent reaction to my previous comment (-28 diggs, that must be a record) to a naive invitation to the site of the company I work for and my blog.
I apologize to all that felt betrayed. It won't happen again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The site is a 16 color abomination, the lamp is way clunky and gaytarded, and its amazingly ***** expensive. I ***** on his 1.99$ LEDs.
- pottsbgstv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A little expensive, but i will take 10.
They over paid on LED's, you can get cheap LED's from http://www.besthonkong.com - ledlampdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you all for your comments (positive and negative). It seems that most of you are concerned about cost and some of you point out ugly design. As for cost, do note that this lamp was built in 2002. The LEDs were purchased years ago (end of 2002) when the price of bright LEDs was considerably higher than what it is today. The aluminum was in fact an overkill, but was meant as an experimental design. If you have a look at the original design idea (page 9), it was intended to be much simpler. In the end, it depends on your taste. If you were to re-build the lamp shades today (without the massive aluminum body), I'm sure that the price would be significantly lower.
And yes, the site is dying because an hourly quota is imposed on outgoing data transfers. I am looking into a better solution in the next few days. I've already removed overly large images and some other large files.
Again, thanks for all the feedback! It's very thought provoking. - globalmarketing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Recommend two led lamp websites

- darkmoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0rather than an ethernet LED lamp, how about a Wi-Fi LED lamp? :)
