Make "Light" Graffiti With a Disposable Camera
hactivist.com — Here's how to make "light graffiti" out of disposable digital cameras - once the camera is modded it will display images/words automatically and run for about 2 days.

- diggthiscrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WOW! That was aweseom, you guys gotta watch the video! Its basically temporary grafitti using light. really cool! digg++
- vincejose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Neato.
- keng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2link to video.
http://www.hactivist.com/flashpoint/video.html- esotericguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you'd think they'd use the side of the truck huh?
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hahahaha, this is delightfully pointless
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Watch the video to see someone flashing messages by the roadside thereby attempting to cause a major pile up by distracting the motorists. You too can be a moran using a disposable camera and duct tape.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A refeshingly stupid waste of money and time.
- nydan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good idea but the video isnt too convincing
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always thought “light graffiti” meant doodling on a ***** napkin.
- omgitsmit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like the website is getting hammered. I didnt get a chance to view the video but looks like a good geeky 'arts-n-crafts' idea. Ive taken apart a disposable before and shocked the hell out of myself trying to flash my friends right in their faces.
- I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it says IO WAI sometimes on that video - he says on the guide that it's because the flash isn't positioned correctly. I like it. Make a penis shaped mask or one with a swear word and shoot it through a school window (may need a lens) or in a cinema or something.
- ironbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting idea, but the kludgy looking units look sort of like they could blow up at any time. Just try getting into a press conference with one.
- 6pintsofbitter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this rocks! One of these in the right spot could get alot of attention, plus no vandalism charges
- Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mirror?
- miami_swede, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1site down
- dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is a better way to do light graffiti, take one of those solar powered garden lights and hack on to it a high power LED, this setup will run forever assuming that it's not found or covered up.
- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dfunct
Yeah, that one seemed like a better idea (and also looked like the tripods from war of the worlds!).
Still neat. - lsrccrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure you can be arrested somehow. Disturbing the peace or some such nonsense. But this is hella cool.
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you imagine putting "I'll kill you" or something outside some girl's window and hooked up to a timer? Have it in a tree and have it flash into his room every night, just for a minute or two.
/not funny, but sort of - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Site is slow already, use the coral version:
http://www.hactivist.com.nyud.net:8080/flashpoint/ - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now this is a nice way to get the s*** shocked out of you. It's no fun to have a AA battery discharge on you. But this is a pretty neat (yet ultimately pointless) concept.
I like it. +digg - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even better, here's a printable instructions PDF: http://www.hactivist.com.nyud.net:8080/flashpoint/handout1.pdf
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have the link to the Disposable Camera to Shock Glove conversion?
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Server dead?
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess not, but it's hiccuping pretty bad.
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It's a stensil placed over a flashbulb. No digg. Lame.
- Mantarii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I looked at it until it died. I'd have to say that, while not technically complex, it is a very good idea... especially at a 'photographic' event where you could potentially get your message exposed in someone else's pictures!
- noclue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0moran?
- thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought it would be something like using the flash to excite the atoms in some paint to create a temporary glow in the dark effect. But this is kind of stupid.
- repomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Pointless horrendous heavy metal music soundtrack ... no digg :p
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Wai! :D
- Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That aint graff.
- ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Several marks for an original "no war" campaign, but minus several million for common sense.
I'm sure my local Armed Response Unit have better things to do than have an old dear calling them describing a large unshaven man with a kind of, "plastic bundle, secured with tape, with wires poking out, and batteries", last seen "positioning it it in a public place". - armcurl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool stuff, but I'd hate to imagine what might happen to you if this home-made battery-connected thingummyjig fell out of your rucksack on the tube...
- dink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This seems like a solution in search of a problem. There are a million lightsources you can tag stencils on. Why didn't anyone think to aim this at a large board and walla instant any time of the day protest poster, it could even marqee if the electronics were right.
hell, im surprised no one mentioned the idea of putting these stencils on billboard lights, so that the message super imposes a given billboard -- illegal, probably, but i didn't say I was endorsing these ideas either. infact, Im not endorsing any of this. - DeadlyHunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame you couldnt even read it
- asplodzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/06/subway-parasite-uses-a-mac-mini-to-project-art/
It's still a concept, granted... but it'd definately attract more attention than a couple words flashing in the same place every so often. - EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ya, doesn't seem smart to leave small homemade electronic devices laying around. And that subway parasite thing, just stupid.
- djs1117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://tartaros.zkm.de/~pipslab/print.php
^ I thought they were talking about this...
You just set a camera to a slow shutter speed, get a flashlight or lighter, and draw in the air. You can get some really cool 3d stuff - sqrlproductions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so that's what an IED looks like ;) at least, that's what I would tell the 911 operator: "yeah, some guy just dropped off a small, dark item with batteries and wires coming out of it next to the federal plaza/building ... wait, it's flashing now ... oh em gee"
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUGG a like to a hacktavist website on the front page of digg is pretty sweet. I saw creation is crusifxion once and they talked for about 3/4 of their set. True I went to see some fast grindy metal but I was more entertained by the tech activist stuff they had done. If you guys get the chance you should check that band out their ideas are more interesting than their music. They actually put out a CD that had like 6 songs on it but came with like a 100 page book explaining their project in which they would steal game boy games reprogram them and then put them back on the store shelves as a way of getting political propaganda to the youth. Some of the stuff is kinda lame but for the most part these dudes have some pretty inventive ways of getting their point across.
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did this a LONG time ago without destroying a disposable camera. Here's a few tips: you can use battery voltage to vary the flash frequency. That way the unit doesn't try to flash before the capacitor reaches full charge. Make sure you use the TLC555 instead of the standard 555; they use less energy.Using thin cardstock makes it easy to build a mask, but those flashes do put off alot of heat at times. It wouldn't go well for your graffiti if it lead to an arson charge. After you cut your template out, use white glue to attach a small piece of aluminum foil with the shiney side towards the flash. This will reflect some of the heat and most of the light back into the flash. The flash doesn't do well with heat either, and might prematurely fail, so it's a good idea to glue a small chunk of metal to the flash bulb or carrier. (I built my units with a standard $2.00 flash bulb from rat shack.) Take a hint from the LED throwies; attach a small magnet to the unit, then you can quickly attach it to a light pole out of reach of people. If you do attach it to a lamp post, you can steal their electricity by using a ferrite coil and a diode; stray magnetic fields from the ballast will trickle charge the battery when its not in use. Now obviously it won't trickle charge it as fast as it discharges unless you do this last mod: build a small trigger module that will only set off the unit after hearing a sound. A small mic tuned to voice frequencies can charge a tank circuit which triggers the unit for a minute or so, making it good for about a half dozen flashes (depending on battery charge). And if you get a kick out of doing this, make sure you sanitize your flashers. I got a $30 littering charge for placing these around Mesa, and thats only after they tried to charge me with stupid ***** ranging from terrorism to vandelism. I gave up on those humorless bastards, who apparently think dondescript statues of wasps and the annual passion play by the mormon church will be a draw.
- jenx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh. yeah it's delightfully pointless. i agree. still cool, but i dunno. at the end of the day, who else is gonna see it, right?
- blakemara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get it: Kid goes to all that trouble, yet never bothers to get a decent projection surface so you can read this inane message?
[shaking head] - pirateboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice site eather way.
- KevinSmokesPole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used to be for war. I thought it was a necessary evil that countries sometimes have to engage in, in order to beat back the forces of darkness in the world. You know, like Hitler and *****. But then, one night, I was walking down the street... I looked over at the back of a semi trailer and saw a flash... I stopped, and watched the back for a second, and saw another flash. I suddenly realized that the flash was made up of letters--it was a message. A message to me. And so I moved closer, in order to see what the message said. It took watching about fifty more flashes because it was projected onto the dirty, lumpy back of a trailer, but when I realized what it said, I was dumbstruck. It said, "No War". All of a sudden I realized that I had been a fool! No War! How ***** simple is that?!? It was brilliant in its childlike, retarded, sophomoric view. Hitler? ***** him. We have enough Jews... Who cares if he burns a few million? As long as we can stand up to him and say, "No War," why it won't matter how much of Europe he overran. The power of this message flowed through me like ***** through a goose. I immediately went out, bought a Prius, and installed a Mac Mini in the dash. Now I'm posting this while driving to give Hugo Chavez a nasty blumpkin. If only all of you could share in my utter joy!
