Laser-etched Laptop Ads
chuddup.com — Leah C. strives to own the first laptop paid for by advertisements laser-etched on its surface. Each square inch is $150, but for $30 she'll buy you a drink.

- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Wow she's hot. I wonder what she'll do if you just buy her the laptop? =0
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -23/+20DO NOT GIVE THIS GIRL YOUR MONEY (sorry for posting twice, I wanted this at the top so people would see it)
Macbook Pro dimensions:
Height: 1.0 inch (2.59 cm), Width: 14.1 inches (35.7 cm), Depth: 9.6 inches (24.3 cm)
14.1in x 9.6in = 134.36 sq in
134.36 sq in * $150/sq in = $20,304. That's how much she makes if the entire laptop is covered in laser etching.
Are MacBook Pro's really that expensive? Or is she just trying to profit.. well lets see here. I vote the latter.
I'm not much of a math person, but I'm pretty sure my figures are correct. Buried as spam. - GNiMeLF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11100quid if i can feel your left breast
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10Stop digging my post down please. Her mission is to buy a laptop with the proceeds from this deal. But with the money she could make off it, she could buy a nice car.
I want people to see this.. she's just taking advantage of guys that think she's pretty.
If she wants money, she should have to work for it like everyone else. This is just a scam.. open your eyes. I thought it was a cool idea too until I did the math. - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"she's just taking advantage of guys that think she's pretty"
You're observation is correct, but if you are surprised by this, then I've got two theories about you:
1. You've just had your heart torn out by a woman.
2. You've never spent any time with a woman. - lava, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@adamsucks
I don't understand. What do you get by telling people not to give her money? You don't know this chick, and her laptop is in no way going to affect you. You need to get out more. - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Anyone remember the Million Dollar Homepage? You paid a dollar per pixel!!! One million pixels = one million dollars! There was no other content at ALL!!!
This is not a scam! There is NOTHING wrong with Proffit!!! She purchases the laptop when she has enough advertising to pay for it. Then if more advertisers want to, they can contribute to it, and she can proffit! There is NOTHIGN wrong with that! I hope that her plan works. This is a WHOLE lot better than the looser that had an advert tattooed to his forhead, or the woman had an advert tattooed in her cleavage! - adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6There's nothing wrong with profit, you're right. But there IS something wrong with telling people she's just wanting help paying for a new laptop, then indirectly asking a cumulative total of $20,000+. And that pretty picture at the bottom is her key to getting the money. It's manipulative, it's dishonest, and it's down-right dirty. If you think I'm wrong for trying to persuade people from giving her their hard earned money, then so be it. You're the one that has to live with being a piece of *****, not me.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"You're the one that has to live with being a piece of *****, not me."
Exactly. So let the hot chick earn her money already!
- Rummey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Nice idea, good luck, word to Chipmark.
- Asbradley21, on 10/12/2007, -38/+5You are rediculous, this is such spam, atleast admit it is you. Marked as spam, I hope this never gets to the front page.

marked as spam - thecrystalship, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5I marked as spam also, these internet bums are getting annoying. She needs money, he needs money, we all need more ***** money.
Here is an idea, do what the rest of us do and quit spending so much on food. Really, you don't need it, or am I thinking about clothes? Either way, ***** off bitch. It doesn't look like you need to ask strangers for money, but if you do I suggest you turn to the streets or the pole. You wouldn't get a dime from me any other way. - Asbradley21, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Wow. What I meant and guess should've have said she should have said something like "I would like to buy a macbook and will laser etch an ad on it for money, please help" Rather than trying to identify the person doing this as someone else.
- kentk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8No faith in people who say they are girls on the Internet huh? Had a few disappointments, did we? =P
- ldandersen, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16I know the girl. It's not spam.
- MiddleGirth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Just because you know the person who is spamming doesn't mean it isn't spam. Of course it is. What is the difference between this and blog spam?
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ldandersen

- ryansking, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I vouch for her. She's a cool girl and she's going to be buying me some PBR (if you know what I mean!!).
- andyatkinson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Sure why not. Although you could accomplish the same thing of AdSense revenue (might take a while to earn the 1k you'd need for a MacBook though). have you seen Kevin Rose's etched black MacBook? seems like a good idea in theory, but the results clash with MacBook style in my opinion.
- PaiTrakt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Is it just me, or does Kevins laptop look like crap after he etched it?

- Stompp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Dugg simply for this comment at the bottom:
"My old computer will be donated to Cameron's mom. Don't worry, your laser-etched ad will probably be around longer than your internet company!"
edit: and yeah, cause she's hot. - Irimi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I'll take her out for a fun night if she flys me down to where ever she is at, and if she pays me 150$ I will even wear a shirt that promotes her idea! We can go to some place that sells Pabsts, and I'll even buy the Pabst (because that is what she seems to like). Please help get the word out to her, thanks, diggers. I really want to do something nice for her, she seems like a really sweet girl.
- ripe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2If she thinks she is going to seduce me into sending her money, she is wrong, there's no way I'm going to.... damn, hit the donate button already.

- foolio314, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I actually know the girl. I've seen her boobs. They're not very good. The rest of her isn't bad though. She's got an enormous chin, but the rest of her is pretty good. Pretty slutty though. You might have a chance if you donate, but please, don't do it for that reason (or any reason).

- BarryG, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5isnt the etching going to be really expensive? Like more than the computer itself? I really have no idea, just guessing...
- DeusMachinae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7RTFA she says she has access to the etching machine at work.
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Read the article.
"Instructables is located at Squid Labs and I have access to their laser etching/cutting machine. Click here to see other laser etched laptops."
- killdashnine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5To make it better, I'd suggest that she demonstrate her respect to her potential sponsors by hanging out at Panera Bread, Starbucks, or other public WiFi spots for a certain amount of time each week (particularly during rush hours). The cost of coffee and bagels may have an impact on things, but such is the cost of sponsorship!

- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5She is super cute, but I'm in the same position she is in. Also a CS student, I live about one and a half hours from Emeryville (in Chico). I'm also a broke ass college student who can't afford the much wanted MBP. I'm thinkin about ways to get it but i need to work for it. Ilbet she a decent paycheck but we all know all of that goes to paying back loans for the next decade. She will for sure get a lot of guys wanting to go out with her. PS, i also have that same iMac Graphite at home so i know her pain. Creative was to get it nonetheless.

I'm not much of a math person, but I'm pretty sure my figures are correct.- DeusMachinae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And what if she never collects enough money to buy a Macbook Pro? Will the people who expected to have their ad etched in get their money back?
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yea she will etch their ad on her stomach ,take a picture and they should be happy they even get that if she doesnt get enough dough
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's their own fault for donating their money simply because she's cute.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3whoops, I think she made a decimal error; $2030 is very close to the $1999 the MBP actually costs (well, if you disregard taxes, which might run you over that).
- DeusMachinae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And what if she never collects enough money to buy a Macbook Pro? Will the people who expected to have their ad etched in get their money back?

With all due respect but look sweetie, you're not in college anymore - you're an adult... go into a credit union and take out a low interest computer loan.
You can also deduct parts of the cost from your taxes so there's really no excuse for this *****!

Lot of smart mofo's working there. She could probably get her laptop just by giving one of those rich geeks a BJ. - johnlark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's interesting how everyone here knows this person. I guess it explains why this digg made it to the front page. Best of luck on your sale.

- euth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Would this have made it to the front page if there was a picture of a goofy looking guy on the site rather than a cute girl?
Sigh, that's digg for you.
If the site could somehow incorporate some PS3 bashing and photos of outer space, it could make it to the front page every week. - adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I just sent her a MySpace message if anyone cares to read.
"Just wanted to let you know I'm doing everything I can to get your article off Digg. You want $150 per square inch for laser-etched ad space? That's fine, but your mission is to buy a laptop with the money you earn. At over 136 square inches, your laptop's front cover is worth $20,000 minus the Apple logo. Enough to buy a laptop? Plenty. And don't tell me you have to pay for the etching as well, you already said you have access to the machine. It's a scam, and it disgusts me that you use a picture of yourself as bait to lure in donations. Smart? Sure. Dishonest? Very.
Welcome to the only guy on the planet that doesn't bow down to a pretty face.
Have a nice day.
-Adam"
Bury this article as spam! - ryansac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5$30 for a beer! That's more than a stripper's drink.
- iFrank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You've got to hand it to her, she's generated quite the buzz. She'll definitely make enough to buy it. And if it's a hoax, I applaud the person(s) behind it and laugh at those who were ***** on by it. She's definitely not getting any of my money.
- johntsien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can't believe the amount of cynicism and venom this has spawned. I personally think the idea is quite creative and funny. Would I give her $150 per square inch? No (though if I wasn't married, I might take her up on the $30 drink...), but this is no different than people who sell ad space on their cars to companies who pay for their gas.
Yes, she is an attractive woman, but so what? Are we so sexist that the only 'pure' or 'worthy' hokey Internet success stories we are willing to conscience are ones from men? (I'm thinking of One Red Paperclip's Kyle MacDonald here). We all have different talents and attributes - and the fact that she's an attractive young woman makes the story more marketable but doesn't make me think this is any more or less funny as a concept.
I think it's great that she's kept her old computer for six years (seems fairly thrifty to me) and can certainly understand about being broke. My friends all left grad school with over $60,000 (one has close to 90K) in debt from our 2 year MBAs alone. Even earning post MBA salaries, our student loan payments are non-trivial expenses.
I dug this because it was amusing and funny and commented because I think there is an undercurrent here that is about more than people being upset about her potentially making more money off the ad than the computer is worth - which, in any case, I don't begrudge her because you DO get what you pay for here. She's not trying to defraud anyone.
Rock on... - Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wtf. My G3 500mhz snow dual usb iBook is about 7 years old. And what did I do? I just went out and bought a new macbook pro. I'm tired of seeing these sites. Just go out and buy a laptop. Also, she should just run Linux on that old system. The support is there.
PS: I'd hit it. - adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@johntsien (i hit reply but it didn't reply for some reason)
You missed the problem. She tells everyone she wants help buying a laptop. The ad space on her laptop totals to more than $20,000. A laptop doesn't cost $20,000... this is her way of trying to make money in an extremely dishonest way.
See the problem now?- johntsien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2adamsucks,
I suppose I simply understand the issue differently than you do. I agree that there is potential for her to abuse this campaign of hers and make more money than the laptop is worth. The fact is that selling four 2x3 inch ads (the minimum that I would imagine could be effective to an advertiser) would pay for the computer, software and accessories and leave most of the computer's lid as yet uncovered - or open for pure profit depending on how you look at it.
If she did sell all 20K worth of engraveable area (though realistically, I think the Apple logo should be removed from the calculations) and earn close to 17K on the campaign, I agree that it would be at the very least borderline unethical. However, the fact is that she doesn't expressly state that she'd stop soliciting funds once the computer was paid for. As long as she honors her commitments to display purchased ads, I think that any argument of fraud or dishonesty is a matter of opinion.
At the same time, we just don't know that she's going to cover every square inch, either. It is possible that she'd be willing to stop engraving the lid with new ads as soon as she had enough money to pay for the system but just hasn't put it on her site.
Though she hasn't laid out a policy that says otherwise, to assume that she will sell all 20K worth of engraveable area is, I believe, a jump to conclusions and something of an assumption of guilt with little to no evidence of it.
Anyways, my two cents. I applaud your publicly minded spirit in trying to potentially save people from being defrauded, and I personally am not willing to give money to this endeavor. However, I don't believe as you do that there is evidence of any wrongdoing here, and in the absence of that, it remains a funny, clever and amusing little campaign to me and I remain unwilling to speak against it. If we had evidence, I would readily reconsider, but at least for now, for me, it remains dugg.
