- physicx, on 10/14/2007, -0/+19Adobe is updating the Flash player and will be incorporating the H.264 codec in the next few months, so the quality of web video is going to get much improved.
- pimpinaintez, on 10/14/2007, -0/+10Does the program increase the resolution of the video? its pretty huge but its not as grainy as blowing up a you tube video. Thats pretty sweet!
- Brutus013, on 10/14/2007, -1/+8Uh...you might want to mention the fact that there is pornotube on that...
- slack31337, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4woo hoo :) now that's tv
- Corrosionx, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4Miro is stupid because it downloads Youtube videos instead of streaming them.
- doom2quake, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4Joost looks like a technically solid platform ... hope the mashups keep coming ...
Though i do feel their SOAP web service will make it difficult for developer adoption when REST has truly reduced the entry barrier for mashups - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2"That's not going to do anything for video quality."
Sure it will. It will make it even ***** by recompressing it. - fuckingusername, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I just see a poor flash video, with a purple filter = lame
flash video = blocky low res crap if your targeting dail up users go for it.... - inactive, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3Um, MPEG-4 is a file wrapper, like QuickTime. You could put H.264-encoded video in an MPEG-4 file.
- moocow1452, on 10/14/2007, -1/+3I Get It!!!
HAhahahahahahaahaha!!!1111!!!11! 2! - actual, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2This has a lot of potential.
- str3ama, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2I have to say the first time I saw this I thought wow that's pretty much better then Joost - since no software to install and ergo no memory issues with their software (asides from Flash's usage memory issues in Firefox). But the only thing is that Joost videos are legal and ensured to be working since it's p2p, this could be rigged up with something like tv-links to show actual shows...sure it wouldn't be legal, but who cares?
- Archon810, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2H.264 is miles above anything On2 will ever be able to produce. Go look at M4V/MP4 videos, then go look at Flash.
- Aitese, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1It's a web video player...it'll work on any platform...try clicking the link before making crazy rash decisions next time...oh, I'm on Gutsy
- hausome, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2haha PornoTube http://www.paulyanez.com/labs/joostbeta1/explore.j ... (right picture)
- WhiteHamster, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1that was actually kinda funny
- moocow1452, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I just open the site in Edgy, man.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't load on Gutsy for me (with gnash.) If they ported the main app to Linux I wouldn't have to worry about it.

- TheZorch, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2I was a beta tester of Joost during the closed beta. I love the program. I have an older machine, a 1.6GHz Athlon XP, but it runs pretty good and I've got a 1mbps DSL link. In my honest opinion this is the future of cable TV where every network is Video-On-Demand and instead of watching your favorite shows on "their" schedule you watch them on "yours". This will also increase the number of channels most cable services will carry in the near future. I'd also like to see something like a JoostBox, a set top device that taps into the Joost network for your TV or HDTV. Now that would be cool!
- anshuman, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1humm..so is this how they will support Linux ? no native client dispite using Opensource software like mozilla's XUL etc?
- chime, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Addendum: Upon reviewing this site I'm not sure if it's officially Joost-funded or not. If not, serious props to Paul Y for the Flash dev. It's a tough job making UI in Flash. Keep it up :)
- chime, on 10/14/2007, -2/+2I launched a site ( http://chime.tv ) with a buddy 4 months ago that does YouTube streaming and a lot more. We won the Mashup Camp this year in Silicon Valley. Here's my favorite YouTube channel:
http://chime.tv/c/yt/user/infinitesolutions (replace infinitesolutions with your own username, replace /user/ with /favorites/ to watch favorites)
In addition to non-stop playing of your YouTube videos, it also works with your Veoh (/c/ve/username) and Vimeo (/c/vi/username) accounts. There is also video search across 10 different video sites (YouTube, Myspace, Google, MetaCafe, DailyMotion etc.). And you can put an embedded player on your site with your YouTube channel, favorites, or playlist. Play a video on that page above and you can get embed code for it ( details: http://blog.chime.tv/post/13802517 )
Wish I had Joost's advertising budget to show off our features. Like here's all the videos from Fark, playing non-stop: http://chime.tv/fark.com/video - put any url after chime.tv/ and it'll play the videos embedded or links from that page.
Big-ass DISCLAIMER: I realize this is a plug for my site but then I just wanted to show features we've already had on our little site for months now. There's a lot more clever features (bookmarkable search, your own channels with videos from any of top 10 videos sites, collaborative channel creation, video mail, 20+ channels with tons of videos from across the Internet - organized as best as we could) but you're better off click on the help button on my site than me yapping about it. Thanks for listening :) - jackhatedance, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0i do not think this player has the same image quality and p2p advantage with the genuine JOOST.
It just 'like' Joost. - Mexrocker, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1I have not used Joost in a very long time, it's a shame really... I might check this out...
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -4/+3Joost needs to realize that if they had a web based player, then they wouldn't have to port the joost program to several different os's (ppc, intel mac, windows, linux, etc)
- moocow1452, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1Ok, is this some web version of Joost that works for Youtube or something?
- kidcodea, on 10/14/2007, -6/+5joost is crap.
and about playing youtube channels or searches, even democracy player aka miro does that.
to take the worse in joost (its retarded ui) and skin a website with it, is even more retarded. - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -3/+2Buried till they support Linux.
- kwilliam, on 10/13/2007, -1/+0Mirror
http://duggmirror.com - TVarmy, on 10/14/2007, -3/+1I agree. Also, you wouldn't need to deal with ports. I love joost, and I hear it's getting better and better, but it will not work on TCNJ's Res.Net. I understand why they'd block ports for viruses and file sharing, as those are liabilities. But Joost is a legitimate and legal program!
Oh, but how would the P2P part work over HTTP? Could it work? Or is it more trouble than it should be? - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -4/+1Yay, more Joost spam!
Pathetic shills and their gullible audience. Congrats. - HerrEisenheim, on 10/14/2007, -8/+0No, it isn't. H.264 is great, don't get me wrong, but video quality isn't going to get much improved. In fact, the benefits of H.264 over VP6 are arguable. There's a good chance no one will be able to tell the difference. In fact, in some limited cases VP6 might be considered the "superior" format because of its smaller steamable filesize.
Now it's true that YouTube actually uses VP3, and so the move from VP3 to H.264 is going to be significant—for new material. Old material is simply going to be transcoded from the VP3 master. That's not going to do anything for video quality.
