- yokozuka, on 12/28/2007, -0/+9From Wikipedia: "3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology, after 2G. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Typically, they provide service at 5-10 Mb per second."
In other words, high-speed cell-based wireless connectivity. Slower than Wi-Fi, but covering a very large area (thought cell towers). - RedHerringHack, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7The video was almost completely information free. Notice that he is selling them, so he probably doesn't want just anyone to be able to do it.
- superyounan1, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6and if you had those, then you'll be asking for a smaller lighter laptop with a faster hard drive and longer battery life.
its a first step in a new direction, the kind of laptop you're looking for has been on the market forever - creep303, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6...except not.
- bossm4n, on 12/28/2007, -2/+8This is a nice mod, but an absolutely horrible, unwatchable video. It's more like 12 minutes of mumbling about using the card to connect than it is about the actual mod. In fact he doesn't start talking about the mod itself until about 6:50 in. Even so, he never shows the card being installed into the laptop, only removing the card from it's original case and taking off the unnecessary parts.
- Flamekebab, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5GPRS, you mean?
(or is there another standard again?) - kazamx, on 12/28/2007, -2/+7I don't think 3G is around much in the US. In the UK pretty much the whole country is covered now. Some small villages and mountain tops might not be. Back in 2000 our mobile companies spent about $50 Billion to buy the rights to use the spectrum for their 3G networks.
I believe in the US you use 'The edge' like the Apple iPhone. In the UK we refer to this as 2.5G as its about alf way between the old school GPS and the 3G tech. - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4wonderful, fabulous, terrific (i really can't express how useful i would find this) mod.
yes, the video is terrible though. Here are direct links to the modder's blog (with a text+pictures walkthough); much easier to follow:

i'm having trouble finding somwhere to buy the sadacom modem though, anybody have some links to a shop that sells them? - DDDavinnn, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Has anyone discovered how to connect a Windows Mobile PDA phone (such as a Treo) to use it as a modem on the Linux OS of the Eee PC? It would work just as well as this without all of the soldering.
- Genma, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3it's not like you can expect a youtube video to have the res for some tiny ass solder ponts on a pcb, I don't know why people keep making tech howtos on youtube it's so pointless. anyways it was just to show a clean install and explain his experience testing it out, follow the link to see the pics. the mod is basically taking the pcb out of an external usb 3g modem and soldering the leads directly to the mainboard of the asus. the whole idea is that he figured out there is enough extra room in the chassis for the guts of the modem, and he took the time to test it out with heat, reception, battery life and such. so you don't really have to mod anything besides cutting a few mm of plastic away, just use the usb+- from a port and ground it, and take the 5v from pcie bus, sharing the same antenna with wifi.
- dingletec, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4Depends on which wireless platform the carrier uses. While I use Sprint's 3G CDMA, I don't have to go very far off the beaten path in the Midwest to get greatly reduced speeds or total loss of service. It's great on major highways and in cities, though.
- superyounan1, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2oh this guy installed a touch screen into his laptop... thats brilliant
http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-add-t ...
I was thinking about getting an EeePC, if i do, i will definitely do this - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2wonderful fabulous idea
terrible video (please, for tech howtos, stop making videos. 9 times out of 10 text with pictures (and screenshots! not a camera pic of the screen...) is easier to follow) - sny1120, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1he probably only has one card and doesnt want to undo what he already did just to have it on video....the same way when he did the touchscreen.
- s1mph0ny, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1Laptops have been bottlenecked by their hard drives for some time. Whenever flash drives come down in price it might be worth upgrading from my p3 notebook.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -2/+3The Rick Roll video spam is getting old.
/adds it to the pile:
In Soviet Russia, Rick Rolls you!
Will it blend? - kaptk2, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1I use a program called USBModem and a PPP connection. I just connect my Treo 650 to usb port and run a PPP script. All very easy. I am using Ubuntu on the Eee PC. I am sure that it would work with a Window Mobile version as well.
- Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1"doable by any amateur with a solder iron" somehow that doesn't reassure me...
- s1mph0ny, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1Just don't heat that point too high, hold the iron on it too long, let the iron slip and cut all the traces on the pcb. Piece of cake.
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Then maybe he could have recorded it as he originally did it and edited it? Heaven forbid.
Ok, sure. He is under no obligation to provide us with the info. Any info he provides that he discovered himself is a courtesy, but why bother if you aren't going to do it right? - MWeather, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1The Midwest IS off the beaten path. Off the beaten path in the Midwest is what we call the middle of nowhere.
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1digg this and the parent down.
I thought i had closed the page before hitting submit on this one.... - yokozuka, on 12/28/2007, -3/+4There's plenty of 3G in the US. EDGE is 2.5G.
- s1mph0ny, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1Do not want!
- sethpr, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Liar!
Now a real video of XP and Ubuntu on eee pc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XqRo-4EFzc - neodorian, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1I dunno, I have 3G EVDO on Sprint and somehow I even had it when I was visiting my girlfriend's family in the mountains of Pennsylvania this weekend. It wasn't as fast as it was at home in the city but it was faster than dialup and allowed me to get online on my laptop where there was no internet.

(he's not trying to be obscure with this information; he want to show you how to do it yourself...)
also, where is he selling them? I'm having trouble finding somewhere to buy the zadacom unit... - JudgeMonkey, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Pictures are nice because they are generally sharper, however a nice video of it all happening is a good accompaniment. No reason you can't have both. Especially if you are bad at explaining things, like I am (Now if i only had anything worth explaining besides making macaroni pictures)
- SlvrEagle23, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1In AT&T's case, many metropolitan areas support 3G now: http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3 ...
Around everywhere I've been, GPRS and EDGE closely resemble a sluggish dialup connection, while 3G performs more like snappy broadband.
If you add to that the fact that AT&T's definition of "unlimited" really is, as far as I can tell in my own experiences, truly unlimited, then it's very lucrative to slap a 3G card in your computer, or to tether your machine to a PDA or Smartphone capable of it. When the iPhone gets it, it will make it that much more attractive. - specialK16, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1a la puta!
- superyounan1, on 12/28/2007, -2/+2EeePC has a touch screen???!?! How didn't i know that
- taosk8r, on 12/28/2007, -3/+1Now, if someone will just tell me how to install a decent sized hard drive, decent rez screen, and a halfway decent 3d card, I'd totally buy me an Eee PC and run games under Wine on it.
- HOMEsplice, on 12/28/2007, -14/+9Could someone explain 3G for me. I don't understand.
