- DoodleMaster, on 05/28/2009, -1/+366A wired article actually about wires.
- FrozenPie, on 05/28/2009, -11/+294ffs no it can't play crysis
- vsaint, on 05/28/2009, -12/+245I just recently completed a homemade gpu:

That guy is going places! - Krissam, on 05/28/2009, -1/+69Yo dawg....
- MrInfallible, on 05/28/2009, -0/+67Even on low settings?
- SniperZero, on 05/28/2009, -0/+62Pre-rendered text mode.... thats pushing it.
- Obsidian743, on 05/28/2009, -0/+59Thank you! THIS is what Digg is for!
- s73v3r, on 05/28/2009, -0/+51You are on an island. It looks beautifully rendered.
You are likely to be eaten by a Grue. - densetsu23, on 05/28/2009, -0/+50Hell, it can't even give you a correct answer to 255 + 1.
- Warom, on 05/28/2009, -3/+51I always wondered, since there is open source software, how about opensource hardware? maybe a new project could be started with the aim of creating an opensource processor - then all you would need is a fabrication plant to make it. Ofcourse its not going to rival an Intel CPU but it would be pretty cool to something so important in life as opensource.
- linksus, on 05/28/2009, -2/+48Simply, AWESOME!
- alpha88, on 05/28/2009, -0/+42Read the article. He used wire wrapping.
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -5/+46and it's still cheaper than a mac!
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -4/+45Where are all the lamers who say "too much time on your hands"
yes he could have been watching sports or american idol! - ultrafez, on 05/28/2009, -2/+40Yo dawg, I heard you like wires so we put wires in your Wired so you can re-wire while you read Wired.
- abadjay, on 05/28/2009, -1/+38His blog has more pics
http://www.stevechamberlin.com/cpu/category/bmow1/ - inactive, on 05/28/2009, -1/+37Oh wow, you made one with 64 independent texture nodes?
- mmm_linux, on 05/28/2009, -1/+36if you guys like this, you should check out http://www.homebrewcpu.com/
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -6/+41your brain cells are just dumb amoebas by themselves.
- mixeao, on 05/28/2009, -0/+31but can it play pong?
- ethana2, on 05/28/2009, -0/+29Neurons aren't Amoebas..
- killaspike, on 05/28/2009, -2/+30This is really amazing.
- asgardshill, on 05/28/2009, -7/+34I'm not impressed. Now if he had mined the bauxite himself for the aluminum ore for the case maybe ...
- JQP123, on 05/28/2009, -11/+36 “When I was finally able to mentally connect the dots all the way from the physics of a transistor up to a functioning computer, it was an incredible thrill.”
Those who express their "faith" that a computer as we know it will someday become "conscious" or "self aware" are obviously lacking this sort of insight. Putting more wires and transistors into a box doesn't make the box any "smarter". Regardless of how small, dense or fast the wires and transistors are built, it's still just a dumb inanimate box. - inactive, on 05/28/2009, -1/+26My friend just finished a 4 bit cpu for one of his classes yesterday. It took him about 2 weeks, he was real excited it was like 4.3 mhz
- lAmoebal, on 05/28/2009, -0/+24I take offense to that statement.
- scuba7183, on 05/28/2009, -0/+24build it yourself
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -3/+27You had no faith in humanity and now because some loner built an out-dated process you believe in humanity again?
I think you just made me lose mine. - brodimus, on 05/28/2009, -3/+27http://cache4.asset-cache.net/xc/10077956.jpg?v=1& ...
? - BMcClure937, on 05/28/2009, -2/+25Come back and say this same thing after you accomplish building a CPU...
- cyssero, on 05/28/2009, -0/+23http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_hardware#CPU
- Krissam, on 05/28/2009, -0/+22http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkPoSMClV1U
- Shady77, on 05/28/2009, -1/+22Hey, I have one of those too! Normal framerate when coupled to my 3 year old cpu is about .01, but with overclocking (smarties), I've seen it go as high as .5 fps.
- Bleue, on 05/28/2009, -2/+22Hate to say it but ALL cpus are just a collection of gates anyway, which are transistors. The tour de force is not the build but the design.
But by all means, don't let the world keep you awake, go to bed! - inertiadriftsc, on 05/28/2009, -0/+18no you don't you synthesize this on a FPGA or simulate it in C. This is a whole different realm. Wiring this by hand is way more than a semester project.
- Bainemo, on 05/28/2009, -0/+17everyone loves pedantic nerds
everyone - sinkinglife, on 05/28/2009, -1/+17How many crayons did you eat to form that sentence?
- lilrabbit129, on 05/28/2009, -0/+16They're more like jelly beans.
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -1/+16It's limit is your imagination
- bigsteve, on 05/28/2009, -1/+16Because the whole thing just seems like a two-bit operation.
/realize it's 8 shut up - s73v3r, on 05/28/2009, -2/+17And running a better OS than Windows.
- atomicwedgie, on 05/28/2009, -0/+15+1 for dedication and focus to the love of an idea.
