- Smwbigboss, on 08/20/2008, -8/+97Someone always asks this in every story, so let me just say this now:
You can't use the homebrew channel to pirate games
You also cant play GBA games with a slot 1 flashcard.
You can't transmit information through quantum entanglement.
Mew isn't under that truck.
There is no cow level. - SmilingJess, on 08/19/2008, -2/+54I have been waiting for someone to do this =)
- kinseyincanada, on 08/20/2008, -3/+51hurray now i have 5 things in my room that play DVDs
- gambl0r, on 08/19/2008, -1/+32I was waiting until someone put together a simple walkthrough to try this... thanks Lifehacker :)
- Acglaphotis, on 08/20/2008, -2/+27Also, the cake is a lie.
- digitalarcanum, on 08/20/2008, -3/+27additionally, at dawn, look to the east*
*: I wont be there. - gilbes, on 08/20/2008, -11/+35"Despite the fact that it ships with a DVD drive, for whatever godforsaken reason, the Nintendo Wii doesn't support DVD playback"
Could it be that every device that plays DVD video needs to have a license fee to the DVD Consortium (of which Nintendo is not even a member) addinf to the cost of each device.
Could it be that the reason the PS2 and XBox did is because those companies are in the relm of making home entertainment devices for video (Sony makes DVD players and MS makes Win Media Center and Extenders etc.), and those functioned poorly as DVD players. Could it be that Nintendo does not make home entertainment devices that play videos?
Could it be that since a cheap standalone DVD player is cheap and have been for years and function perfectly well as DVD players already?
Could it be that Panasonic made a DVD video playing Gamecube in Japan that sold poorly realative to regualr Gamecube sales.
There must be some "god forsaken reason" and it could never be that Nintendo didn't want to add to the cost of their platform by implementing a feature that they have no expertise in and has been shown to be a feature that consumers are not demanding on their platform.
No that couldn't the a reason at all.
[The 360/PS3 situation is a bit different as the 360's DVD player adds to its Media Center Extender capabilities and the PS3 needed to pimp Blu-Ray] - Vazel, on 08/20/2008, -0/+22" for whatever godforsaken reason, the Nintendo Wii doesn't support DVD playback"
That's because DVD playback requires royalties be paid to the DVD Forum. - oveedrx, on 08/20/2008, -0/+19how is that possibly NSFW??? that is outright NSFW
- Black6x, on 08/20/2008, -1/+18Most of us HAVE to resort to this. If Nintendo won't give us Earthbound, we're going to do it ourselves.
- ineedunderscore, on 08/19/2008, -1/+19soon to come: interactive pr0n!
- badassninja, on 08/20/2008, -2/+18Ok. If you do this can you play files off of a usb hard drive? (.avi .mkv and so on) For old school emulation can you read the files off of the USB hard drive as well?
I already have a 500GB usb drive, I don't want to swap files onto the card all of the time.
BTW: DVD play back killed a hell of a lot of first gen play station drives. I doubt it's a good idea to put the wii's drive thru the stress of non stop streaming. Oh and quite bitching that the wii didn't come with dvd play back out of the box, it saved them a lot of money (saving the buying money as well). You already had 5 dvd players. - Guspaz, on 08/20/2008, -0/+16Nobody seems to have mentioned that DVD playback on the Wii doesn't actually WORK properly yet. It drops frames all over the place and randomly crashes with read errors. This is a more like a proof of concept, not production-ready code.
Don't go throwing away your DVD player just yet. This will take some time to stabilize into something you can use every day. - InuX, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14If you download tv shows/movies, you can use a portable hard drive or thumb drive with geexbox (if it's recognized of course).
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_apps/GeeXboX - kontraire, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14I'm running the Homebrew Channel on mine. It's awesome. I can dump emulators and ROMs on an SD card and play the entire backcatalog of games for the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Saturn, and more....and that's just scratching the surface of the homebrew apps. I had to wait almost a year for homebrew to come to the Wii, but it was worth the wait.
- CarnivalOfDust, on 08/20/2008, -1/+12Lol. Homebrew gets there first!
http://vmotegirls.com/howtoplay.htm
Possibly NSFW. - Klowner, on 08/20/2008, -0/+11That is most definitely not safe for work, unless you work at a carnival or something.
er.. - Touchdown, on 08/19/2008, -3/+11Nice!
- newsboys, on 08/20/2008, -5/+15than*
Than is a comparison,
Then refers to order of time.
One of the most common English errors...please all, take heed. - moocow1452, on 08/20/2008, -0/+101. Rumors are bunk until proven otherwise.
2. Why would Nintendo redesign a DVD player for even LESS performance than an off the shelf.
3. The only reason DVD's do not come standard is the fact that it costs money to licence use of the DVD Library. - iofthestorm, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9GeeXboX is awesome, it plays videos at a pretty good speed off my portable hard drive. Couldn't tell if it was dropping frames (probably was) but it looked fine. GeeXboX is different from most homebrew in that it's actually a Linux app, and runs through Wii Linux which is somehow packaged in. Currently Whiite Linux (the name for the Wii Linux distro it uses) doesn't support WiFi but once it does GeeXbox will be even more awesome.
- johnnyboy239, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10I'm more exited about the homebrew apps then the dvd playback. I really want to try out doom on there and see if it actually works.
- z00k, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9Sometimes Third graders need to learn too.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8I found the problem, apparently it won't work if you have Gamecube memory cards plugged in.
- stoanhart, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7I hope you were trying to be funny, and that's not really your best attempt at English.
- CarnivalOfDust, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Ah. Whoops. (Found it a few weeks back and should maybe have checked it!)
Sorry...! - chokeaduck, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7I could have sworn there was a Leisure Suit Larry game announced that would have you waggling around the Wiimote in a banana hammock type holder.
- Koushiro, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9Yeah, I don't really need my Wii to be a DVD player. I've kind of already got 1 in my PC and 1 stand alone, and that's not counting the other 5 in the house.
- Smwbigboss, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7It was first done almost a year ago.
http://dev-scene.com/WiiNews:2007-08-20_-_Wii_Medi ...
Of course, there was no homebrew channel back then, so you had to jump through hoops to install it. - robertnealan, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9How many people actually need another DVD player in their house?
- quamb, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Exactly.
The fee is minor though Nintendo aren't stupid.
20,000,000 units x $2 Royalty Fee = Nintendo out of pocket $40mil. - Thundercat1971, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Thank god for this!!! Up until now I haven't had any way to play my collection of DVDs!
- ZackScott, on 08/20/2008, -6/+12Listen, the Wii is awesome (I own one), but I'm not so sure I would like to use my Wii to play DVDs. I don't doubt the spirit of the machine itself, but how long will the drive last? Nintendo does make good hardware, but if it were as simple as a software update, then why are there rumors of Nintendo making a new Wii that plays DVDs? Maybe the current drives can't be forced to live it up?
- z00k, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Wow.
I literally forgot that you could rent games... - iofthestorm, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6Answer is no. Team Twiizers is 100% against piracy and they are probably the most capable group of hackers, although this might lead to piracy later on right now I don't think it's going to come any time soon. Also, I hate people calling ROMs "backups" now, as if they actually backed them up themselves or something.
- theclaw1, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Correct. The real truth is licensing.
Nintendo decided not to have Wii or its game discs certified by the DVD Forum. This let them avoid paying fees, but also means it won't offically play DVDs until or unless Nintendo submits the console for certification. - oveedrx, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5couldnt they just made the wii 271.99 ? ( 269 regularly here) who is going to miss out on 2 dollars
besides the people that bussed to get the wii - ElectricDoodie, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Are there any setbacks to doing this?
- STKD, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth. Myth.
Keep reading until it sinks in.
And just for future idiotproofing: No, discs do not spin backwards either. - yunus, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Why not setup a DVD playback download channel and charge $5 and make money on it.
- z00k, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5... Sigh.
- Darkangel754, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Buy it, it's an awesome game.
- NeonGod, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6Rent it.
- theragu40, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6More uses besides not paying for games? Actually, Wii homebrew currently cannot be used for pirating purposes at all, so every use is for something besides not paying for games. Pay for your ***** games, it's people like you that drive game prices up and spawn long whiny statements from publishers about how much money they're losing. Assclown.
- orangefly, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4whoosh is not a strong enough word....
- TangentThought, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5If you're trying to save space by having two things in one, why not?
- removesstains, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Man you must not be able to follow directions very good, cause wiibrew.org had easy instructions that anyone over 4th grade could figure out.
- ldkronos, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5Perhaps you missed the fact that this was a hack for the Wii, not the PS3, and that every Wii does not come with a free PS3 (despite what you may have seen on ebay when the Wii first came out)
- ZackScott, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Another reason to get my Wii back out!
