$40 + $15 + $12 = $67 ~= $200 ?

Unfortunately with the WGT634U discontinued, them are slim pickin's. Asus WL-500G/GD and the Asus WL-HDD may be your best bets. - studiophi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Granted, this could be done quicker with a wifi-pda/tablet/smartphone, an old pc, and WiFiTunes and the Firefly Media Server. Advantages: remote control over wifi, not having to solder things, and the probability that you already own all the pieces.
http://iconoclastech.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And by the way, Eagelfire, I, for one, think the image script you have there is VERY slick.
And from a design analytics standpoint, also very good GUI design -- allows users to see the full image without encumbering their interface at all. Once you're done with the picture, just shrink it back down, and continue the article. Noice. - Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I like all his ebay links, lmao"
What can I say? I love eBay.
"What the hell is up with the javascript on that page?"
Well I think it's cool. If you don't like it (or it doesn't work for you) you can hit the View Image links next to the thumbnails. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like all his ebay links, lmao
- N3wtR0ckn13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes diy!! boooooo yay digg++
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a bit of a pants explanation, could have been a lot more methodically explained.
- AnimeRules15421, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsome to say the least.
- masonry01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This rocks. Your pc is a remote - what do you need a remote for - get off your lazy ass!!
;-) - enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
yeah, and it looks just like it's homemade too. - MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome but I don't have the patience to do all that. heh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. Add a remote and this thing would be awsome.
- kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Also, do I get credit for writing the image-thumbnail-expander script all by myself?

no, its broken under Opera - T8_um, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What more could you ask for....... EagleFire, I give you props. thx
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eaglefire: Actually, the JavaScript window expansion seems to work perfectly fine with Safari.
And ignoring the expected, lame-ass, ignorant comment about "expensitronic Mac hardware", there's an easy way to develop for Safari: USE STANDARDS, DAMMIT. Safari is a very standards-compliant browser, just like Firefox and Mozilla, and Opera, but unlike IE. While you probably should test your website in any browser possible, the only browser you really need to test against is IE if you write standards-compliant code. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You seem to give good pictures and descriptive instructions. I love the zooming javascript thumbnail thing you got going there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very neat indeed. Anyone know where I could find a list of routers I could do this with? Broadcom based w/ USB port?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so what was the final cost? Looks like it was pretty close to what he was trying to avoid buying.
- njbair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't even have a home stereo, but digg anyway cuz diy hacks are sweet.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That javascript image thing is awesome. Seriously. More sites should have that. I usually HATE javascript image popups.
Network player aint bad either :) - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think a web based interface for this would be awesome. Imagine whipping out a PDA and connecting to it to make the PDA a remote... i really think i'd like to get a PDA now!
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a really neat project, even moreso that it runs on a wireless router. When using OpenWRT, does it retain its routing functionality while you're listening to music wirelessly?
- Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0simx,
I am, like all people, not perfect. Is there some method by which I can test whether my scripts adhere strictly to the standards? I as yet only know of one way of testing my scripts, and that is to run them in a browser. I try to adhere to the standards but browsers have bugs - they all do. I also make bugs in my programs because I'm not perfect. So am I expected to test my code against a standard which has, to my knowledge, never been implemented perfectly, and then blindly expect it to run on a browser which itself does not implement the standard perfectly?
Also, I understand why my comment about the price of Mac hardware was expected, but why was it lame-ass or ignorant? Macs (having excellent quality of hardware and software) are to be expected to cost more than your piece of commodity PC hardware.
IE is actually fairly compliant if you take into account that it's selective about what parts of the standards it complies with. To make my scripts I usually start out on Firefox (using the Gecko DOM reference) and will trim back the DHTML features I use until the set of features I use becomes a subset of the features supported by both IE and Firefox. I figure from there many browsers would be able to deal. - derangedsheep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For anyone looking for one, I found the router for sale here. http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/wgt634unar.html
- Virtualtaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it have a remote?
- Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey look at that - the Linksys WMB54G runs Linux.
Cool. - mattgilberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUDE, FRICKIN AWESOME! I have a linksys AP just sitting away (don't wanna mess with my actual router) think its possible to do on that? and what exactly is the usb port in the back of the router? either way, that's an amazing hack, u should be on hack-a-day, keep up the good work, i will be looking forward to ur tivo hack.
- Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have a tivo soon.
Gonna hack that bitch up :) - VMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or, if you have your TV hooked to your stereo, you can buy a TiVO for cheap and stream it through that with a wireless usb adaptor.
- Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When using OpenWRT, does it retain its routing functionality while you're listening to music wirelessly?"
Yes. It can still do everything OpenWrt does (although running data full-speed through the router may reduce music performance). The mpd takes about 30% CPU time on a shoutcast stream, 15% on an mp3. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"a bit of a pants explanation, could have been a lot more methodically explained."
If you didnt get what he wrote you wouldnt be able to complete the project succesfully anyways. - Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, he's right. I majored in pants explanations in college.
Minored in coolots. - Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The cool thing about scripts is that they're not compiled. The code is right there for you inside the page.
Also, I didn't ask about XHTML validation. I asked about script validation. I'm confident my handwritten HTML will render properly in even the crappiest of browsers (buddyfarr, I designed the page in Firefox 1.5 - something must be fruity about your browser).
It's the scripts which push the limits of the browser's capabilities (and tickle the most bugs) that need to be validated / fixed / debugged. - buddyfarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Also, do I get credit for writing the image-thumbnail-expander script all by myself?
no, its broken under Opera"
it was all messed up in firefox 1.5. the scrolling code windows were gone and the text that was in them was written on top of the other text on the page...hmmm. opened fine in IE though.
actually eaglefire if you want to test your code, post it then go to:
http://validator.w3.org/
that is the html validator page for the World Wide Web Consortium that writes the standards.
w3.org
it helped me find that my page that I created in publisher had 179 errors. rewrote it in Nvu and now only have 1. plus it loads about 10 times faster.... - Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could also just turn up your speakers really really loud.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course, if you just want a cheap solution to having music from computer to living room stereo, get a couple of 16 ft stereo extension cords from radio shack - as long as you have a way to route the cords unobtrusively. That's about as cheap as it gets - and simple.
- kevinspruill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just get the Linksys WMB54G - Wireless Music Bridge
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1137451822026&packedargs=site%3DUS&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
It made by a quality company and it retails around $80-$100 depending on rebate. - buddyfarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0validated your page:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fdevices.natetrue.com%2Fmusicap%2F
on validator.w3.org. it shows 79 errors. the good part is they show you exactly what the errors are. it might look fine in IE but M$ does not write the standards, the W3C does.
hope this helps!!

- neoDingo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love this kind of stuff!
- TimRogers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about someone builds me one and I pay for it?
- stevec5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like a lot of trouble. I just plugged the audio out into a Belkin FM transmitter and didn't have to build anything.
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Superp Image script, can you send me the code
- Gomez1856, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow.... surprising amount of negativity surrounding a fun project that someone went through a lot of trouble to share with everyone. Who cares if it costs close to what you could buy a premade one for? Who cares about the fact that it looks homeade? It is homemade.
Nice work man! - mooseo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the icing to a project that I've been working on for a while! I was thinking of following tracydanger's solution of running long cables, but that would have involved hours crawling through my attic which is a LOT less fun than hacking a box to do something it's not built for.
Everyone asking for a remote: here's the solution I'm looking at...
http://www.giantdisc.org/
This is a set of tools to build a headless jukebox controlled by a Palm PDA, either wired or over ethernet or bluetooth... exactly what sneakerELPH was talking about, and all rolled up and ready to go
Thanks! - swede67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just happen to have a WGT634U in a bag in the basement gathering dust. The LCD and USB audio adapter are now on their way....
It's all about the project for me, don't know how much I'll actually use it (already have several ways to stream music to the entertainment center). I'm always looking for excuses to heat up the soldering iron though.
Thanks for sharing... - spiff142, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if this is reversable? Do these boxes have enough CPU to encode?I wanna stream my C-Crane radio to my pc in another room.
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No, he's right. I majored in pants explanations in college. Minored in coolots."
I haven't a clue wtf you're talking about. With reference to my earlier comment, what I meant to say is that the explanation could be clearer with regards to hooking up the LCD to the serial port pins on the inside of the router rather than the current flying visit you pay the topic under section: "Hackin' it up". - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Awesome hack! Very simple, and elegant.
