- whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -9/+109There is...STOP USING IT
- jb978, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38hey thanks! I was actually pissed off a couple minutes ago by such a site. In OS X the preferences are not in the Edit menu btw..
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30You have to remember that some people are forced to use IE, say in a corporate environment, not me however :) I rolled out firefox when it was 1.0.0.4 :)
- Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27It's Tools>Options
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Sadly, you're using IE.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Hate it when websites take it on themselves to resize your browser window? We do. Here are four simple steps to make sure that these Webdev control freaks never resize your Firefox window again:
Windows:
* Click "Tools", then "Preferences"
* Select the "Content" tab
* To the right of "Enable Javascript" click "Advanced"
* Uncheck the box next to "Move or Resize Existing Windows"
OS X and Linux :
* Click "Edit", then "Preferences"
* Select the "Content" tab
* To the right of "Enable Javascript" click "Advanced"
* Uncheck the box next to "Move or Resize Existing Windows"
Thanks to TechPwn for the tip! - chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22While you're at it, deselect all advanced javascript settings. They all suck
- osirisothedead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@mediaphile
Normally I'd agree. I use Firefox at work for nearly everything, except on some of our corporate intranet sites that require IE because they use ActiveX controls, etc.
Nothing pisses off *NIX engineers like forcing them to use IE. - adragons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Huh? I thought that the less space available, the more likely you were to accidentally click on an ad.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Best tip of the day right there, folks. Dugg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11this totally helps my PORNO surfing
- jamble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://digg.com/design/reasons_not_to_resize_a_browser_window
- liquidcoooled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its all well and good until the site creates a new window that is about 50 pixels square marked as none resizable to put its picture in.
*that* is just as annoying because now you have a tiny window which the designer couldn't resize and you only see the top left of a picture.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeh, also in my Firefox (2), it is tools, 'Options'..... i dont have a preferences.
But yeah thanks, some site just started annoying me with this last night, so its great it is here on digg now. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5What does being French have to do with it?
- insinuate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Always nice to have something really helpful to be implemented with only a few clicks.
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>>5835040
There's a way to stop that too:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Prevent_websites_from_disabling_new_window_features
Just set the .resizable pref to true. - sonnysavage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I use Yahoo! Mail Beta, and they have their own context menus. Unchecking the "Disable or replace context menus" makes for a lousy experience there.
- cwshea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Might as well copy it over for those of you who don't want to lose .8 seconds.
Windows:
* Click "Tools", then "Preferences"
* Select the "Content" tab
* To the right of "Enable Javascript" click "Advanced"
* Uncheck the box next to "Move or Resize Existing Windows"
OS X and Linux:
* Click "Edit", then "Preferences"
* Select the "Content" tab
* To the right of "Enable Javascript" click "Advanced"
* Uncheck the box next to "Move or Resize Existing Windows" - ummmmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3go to options and then to the content tab and click advance and you will see the window...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you have any problem with sites doing _anything_ you don't want them to and are using Fx you should go through your preferences. Because I haven't had a single, popup, resize, switch focus, close or anything in the years I've been using it.
- tehloki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6why bury the guy who's only asking for help? god, people can be so cruel. *sniff*
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Er, all I have to say is... is that it? I found that the first time I used firefox.
- Zera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this include Javascript pop-ups? Because I want those to be the size the webmaster intended, (and not HUGE)
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you! I wish I'd known about this a long time ago.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stumbled upon this a couple of weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised. Good to know.
- Spinfusor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mozilla should make this turned off by default (like in Opera).
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16@.Steven:
There is never any excuse to use IE. If you can't use any other browser at work, stop ***** not doing your job at work and wait until you get home to browse the internet. - ogremidget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Bigger window = better chance for you to accidentally click on an ad.
Its *****-economics."
You can't click on an ad if its not there. Try installing the adblock extension sometime.
And *****-economics is flashing banner ads. For me, those don't attract attention, they drive it away. - ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you thank you. I am so glad to you told me this. This is the most useful digg post ever.
- Sep11insidejob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"You have to remember that some people are forced to use IE, say in a corporate environment"
Just install Firefox on your documents, that is what I did. - sven007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4also, if firefox works perfectly, yet they don't use it incase someone looks, i found a skin online that makes firefox look like IE6.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4327/ - generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If sites, like the IMDB picture galleries, don't let you open your context menu, uncheck "disable or replace context menus"
- nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very useful article, many thanks. I win Mr. Xbox 360 game screenshot page.
- Baku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks dudey... I never would have thought to check in there. :D
- DoorFrame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody know how to prevent a website from hiding/removing the toolbars?
- quentinmcalmott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's also portable firefox: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable . Install it onto a USB drive, and just run it from there. Nothing touches your hard drive.
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's under Options now!
- Zera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@codes:
I'm talking about pop-ups you want. Like a little javascript info pane with relevant info to the page you're at. Or for example many websites have little javascript windows to show the large version of an image shown in an article. See what I mean? - VicousT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant!
- gojcaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG thats awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
- macbth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In BonEcho for the Mac-it's under BonEcho-Preferences...

Thanks a lot for the link, information on how to disable hiding address bar or tool bar in new windows is just as helpful. - fishpen0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2uhh, there are still several websites that work around this and still mess with windows.
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Same here. Does anyone else actually look at the preferences after they install a new program?
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"You have to remember that some people are forced to use IE, say in a corporate environment"
We, too, have an intranet website that uses ActiveX and requires IE. Firefox + IE Tab deals with this problem easily. - 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damn I feel like a idiot. The happens with Camino also. The fix is the same. DOH, I'm ashamed that I've never seen this. Dugg for really helping me out.
- Codes02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@zera : and why would i want javascript popups at all?
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for the instructions. Saved me a trip to another site.
On my PC it's 'Options' not 'Preferences'. -
