- analdisco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16You can also use something alcohol based as a solvent. Since sharpies and most other permanent markers use alcohol in the ink, rubbing alcohol (or in a pinch cologne) will take them off pretty well.
Useful tip, but I thought this was common knowledge. - caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Great tip, but is it necessary to put the URL in the description?
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11*sigh* Now if only I had something to write on the board... *goes back to feeling useless... but useless with a clean dry erase board*
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Who uses super glue on their dry erase board?
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9alcohol...Is there anything you cant fix?
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would have thought after 20 years that you would have learned not to use permanent marker on your whiteboard.
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6While it is old news to many, it is good too see it being spread to many more.
And yes, ANYTHING with a decent amount of alcohol will do just as well. If it's just some fool has written a few words, or a small picture on your white board with a permanant marker, and you want to get rid of it quickly, then just write over it and erase, but if someone has covered the whole board with permanant writing, or there are alot of old white board marker stains (the extra "ingrediant" in the erasable markers does evaporate if left long enough, after a few weeks or months of not being erased, depending on the quality of the pen, it can become pretty stubborn) then you'll want to just soak a tissue, or cloth in metho, ethanol, or even a strong vodka, and just wipe it clean. (Remember to let it dry, otherwise you can end up with pens that don't dry properly because there is too much alcohol in the tip...) - 4ndr3wk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6you can always drink the alcohol and they will soon fade from your mind :)
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually, Digg needs a 'Cannot resist the urge to share any old crap I found while Googling' section
- WarMace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I used to scribble over perminent marker with a dry erase marker as well, stumbled on it by accident when i would write my name at the top in perminent.
- Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Things I learned in military school:
Most things can be cleaned with Windex.
Everything else can be cleaned with Brasso (works for permanent marker).
Windex cleans brasso. - das7282, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I've known this for years and I never thought that it would make a good tip. But oh well, "Thumbs up dude... good tip!" :)
- Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've been doing this for 20 years.
Hmmm...just dated myself didn't I? - zzcain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It doesn't matter how old you are, but this tip is definitely OLDER than digg.
- Scrubby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah. I was going to say, "Or just use alcohol", but you beat me to it.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Haha kingfoot, old boy, you're truly a comedic genius!
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Regular coke works just fine. Yes, this is how healthy it is.
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, as opposed to columbian ;)
(I meant coca cola) - tyroga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coulda just put the solution in the description field and saved us all the jump only to go "Who didn't know that!"
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Likewise.
I once lectured in a fire station training room and they used to use brass polish - that works great too. - donte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now we just need how to figure out how to get the dry erase markings off of the projector screens that absent-minded professors write on when they are dropped down in front of the dry erase board.
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great tip, another quick tip you can use a wet handkerchief to wipe a blackboard clean of chalk.
- odst29, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seen this before, but it's a very useful trick!
- RareSaturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Duh! Every uni student knows this! How is this news???
- Hawk2007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It was always fun sneaking sharpies onto the dry erase boards in grade school. The teacher would flip and freak when she realized what she was doing since it took a lot of time, water and elbow grease to get it off.
- killabee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lifehacker got their story from Wikihow:
"WikiHow has a simple method for removing permanent marker from dry erase boards". Credit is given where credit is due :). - rdaddario, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just use a dry erase board that accepts all type of markers and paint... you can get them cheap and any size at ZoomaZoomaZoom.com
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Did you read the article? I think that's exactly what they said. I found rubbing alcohol work better than a marker though
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was it a picture of a HUGE pecker? I did that in permanent marker at a party once; real "beaut" too. Everyone loved it but the dude's parents. I hear tell they ditched the board so they must not have known about this trick. Live and learn...
Must have looked pretty damn funny out by the curb for the garbage man. - marillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When I was teaching a C class, I used a permanent marker to draw an "Array Boxes" and use dry erase to fill in numbers. Very easy to erase the number without worrying about saving the box. It was also fun to hear the class gasp in horror when I use a permanent marker. Don't leave permanent marks up there for more than a day or two.
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I used to just use another sharpie and do the same thing until one day it didn't work and I had permanent marker all over the glass. I then tried rubbing alcohol because I knew that was what was the base of the ink. To my surprise it worked amazingly
- techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I had the brilliant idea of mixing wet erase markers and dry erase markers on the same board so I could have sections of the board divided by wet erase marker lines and when I used the eraser, it would only erase the dry erase marker stuff and leave the dividing lines alone. I could clean the wet erase marks with water and it worked and I was happy until I cleaned the board with the board cleaner (aka ammonia) which made the wet erase stuff permanent and NOTHING could clean it up. I wonder if mixing ammonia and permanent marker would have the same effect.
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regular? As opposed to Comlumbian?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If its not the dry erase board but instead your skin, try this one:
http://www.desinc.net/remove_permanent_marker - bugaloobob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't use any gasoline based cleaners such as lighter fluid as it'll strip the coating on the whiteboard.
Best to use either water and elbow grease or writing over with the regular whiteboard marker as the tip states. - britswimchick91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rubbing Alcohol works too. I know tons of ppl added that, but I want to put in my two cents too.
- britswimchick91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never tried that before. I usually just use rubbing alcohol.
- jollygreengiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah i thought everyone knew this, been around for years yet everyones diggin it
- bubbazanetti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A simple pencil eraser will also do the job...and a bit cleaner...it will even take off older layered dry erase (that didn't completely erase.
- eclosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI: Fingernail polish remover get's permanent marker off just about any surface without a trace.
- mistapotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just get a pencil eraser -- the white kind. Takes off permanent marker off most non-porous surfaces.
*from a teacher who's seen his share of "tagging" on desks, lockers, and such. - zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Everyone? How can you be so sure.
- theunderground5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That use to happen all the time when i was in school, my teachers always used to use nail polish remover
- levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well I'll be darned, this thing actually works! DUGG!
- RicOlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw the exact same article on wikihow the other day.
- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11000+ diggs?
what is happening to digg... - CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1zippo lighter fluid. i still didn't find a stain that it couldn't clean. second best choice is alcohol
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Neat tip. But I use white board cleaner. Any office supply store (or closet) should have it right next to the markers...
- havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It looks like one company is turning this into a business model (Mead).
http://www.meadzwipes.com/ - Halgy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used to do this to freak my teachers out in school.
