MIRROR!!! - moonaust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The reason "why" is that alot of emacs have video shift problem that needs to be repaired. This way you can bypass the analog signal and get a better overall picture.(emac tends to be a bit fuzzy)
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Two words: helper monkey.
- whitlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I made a basic discharge guide for MacMod a while ago - http://www.macmod.com/content/view/232/2/
- twmsdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That looks pretty slick. How would you discharge a CRT?
- tomierna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Now that the smoking pile of electronics that was my webserver is reconstituted, I'd like to thank boredzo for submitting the story.
Some clarifications (which I will probably add to the page sooner or later):
1) I had to have the controls on the outside or else it would be tough to turn the monitor off and on.
2) This machine was previously a doorstop - one which would have cost over $500 to repair the official way. I "repaired" it for $200.
3) The mod only took about five hours, and that's because I took a break to eat dinner.
4) The eMac case is polycarbonate, and while it didn't melt when I cut it with the jigsaw, it was extremely difficult to sand the edges. That's why the edges aren't exactly straight.
5) I'm probably not going to do anything to change the form factor. That would be a lot of effort to make an eMac into an iMac :) - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The CRT had stopped working. Read the article before commenting.
Sadly, I doubt fcuknu will ever return to this page... - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think he could have spent a little more time sanding the rough edges, but otherwise a good build.
- edicius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9aluminum baseball bat!!!
- akuzemchak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wonder how this affects the weight of the machine, which starts off around 50 pounds?
- slantyyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ripping out the internals and adding an Intel mini to the fold would make it a kick-butt eMac. There's probably space to put in a full desktop sata drive to pump the speed up even more.
- fieldDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Unless i am mistaken, i believe his point was to turn a broken computer into a working computer for half the cost of having it repaired at a shop.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How about putting the high-voltage warning in big red letters and at the top of the article instead of being the last thing being mentioned? If someone doesn't discharge the CRT and gets a shock, it will be too late to read the last step.
And how about explaining that CRT's can keep 10,000 Volts charges for days after you unplug them?
We're talking about a possibly fatal shock from the CRT, this should be made clearer instead of assuming everyone attempting this project knows about it. It would only take one un-knowledgable person... And the results would be very sad. - SPeedY_B, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6http://www.duggmirror.com/mods/Apple_eMac_with_LCD_monitor/
- 9urp5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5VI will get this functionality in a weeks time
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i would have dugg it more if he had taken the guts out and put them into a mini-tower or something. infact, any tutorials around on how to do that?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm amazed at how many people go firing off comments before reading the page and then comment that it's dumb.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude, LCDs are about 3 to 5 times lighter than CRTs depending on the size.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think i got it.
- xbudex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They got rid of it. They now have an educational iMac. http://www.apple.com/education/imac/
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Refresh the page a couple times if the first one doesn't show up.
Digg doesn't seem to have perfected the comment system yet (reply to replies? replies not getting posted properly? not being able to edit even when it's been way less than a minute?) I know, I'm complaining about a free lunch. - WillDearborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ fieldDigg
Why not then take the guts out and put them in a better case. Then you still have the thin LCD screen, which is the only reason for LCD imo. - jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where do you get the eMac? i can't get it online. www.apple.com/emac
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you were reading it, it was already downloaded, not sure what you got, but I can be sure you didn't get "digg effect as [you were] reading it"
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1on of the top 50 mods of all time. (in my book) anybody who disarees shouldn't mod this down, because you should not care so much about what other people think and worry about yourself, and every time you do mod this down you kill a kitten.
- Zanneth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks good, but unfortunately it's the same size. I was hoping he would do some sort of case mod to make it fit with the LCD and make it altogether smaller. Oh well, looks a lot clearer anyway.
- Macaddict102, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do its called the imac
- loquacious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having had this misfortune of taking apart an eMac to get at a dead HD, this guy is a brave soul.
The insides of those machines are a minefield of deadly monkey-shocking fun. - ricksbots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats the first thing on the top of the page.
Maybe he updated the page after your comment......maybe not. - shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is awesome eMac;s are great machines and look so slick with the LCD's inside......A more detailed tutorial would be great!
- mikeman8905, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why doesn't apple make the eMac with an LCD in the first place?
- dineshbabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brilliant work!
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Ya know I did do this... kinda with the original bondi-blue imac. The analog board died in it, so I first just ripped the back off and plugged a 19 inch monitor in... hey that was big pimpin back in the day. Then after I got my powerbook I decided to see how far I could take it. So I gutted the imac, and installed all the innards into small briefcase. It looked like hell inside and out (contrary to popular belief spray painting is an acquired talent), but it did run. I actually just tossed it out a couple of weeks ago, not really any use and like I said earlier... was not the prettiest thing to see, but it was one fun weekend of work.
- stuppy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Brilliant, just brilliant! :D
- cj171, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4dugg already?
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Looks great.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3..with extreme prejudice...
- runelord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very cool! Even broken computers need love. And I thought his plastic edges looked pretty good. I tried cutting some new holes in a plastic faceplace for my PC once, and all I got was chunky melted plastic that smelled. So I'm digging this.
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I think that cutting a crappy hole for the LCD controls was a big mistake
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Okay, why would you want a LCD if you aren't going to slim down the case? CRT is way better than LCD and there is no point in doing this mod unless you are making the case slimmer. What a waste of time and money.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4For someone as stupid as you, I recommend sticking your tongue on one of the capacitors.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Wow pretty cool!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2It's probably out of jealousy. Many of the pro-CRT people have legitimate reasons, the rest are just annoyed that they don't want to shell out the extra cash for an LCD.
- awoodhouse, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3a lot of work - get an imac
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1OOOOOKKKK!!!
- ihate2regist, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2one reason not to buy an all-in-one oh wait, its a mac
- vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3this site seems digg banged...:-(
- whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1wow, digg effect as i was reading it. it just disappeared and i got this
