http://www.lobzik.pri.ee/modules/news/article.php?storyid=404 - randomtask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Is it just me or does this one look like one of the sandpeople from Star Wars?
http://basik.ru/images/2066/22.jpg - mrshll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9geez, the guy made a mistake.
this is a great creative project.
+digg. - Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's not actually cat5 at all. I have 3000' of it sitting next to my desk, and that is definately not cat5. Still pretty creative though.

Office productivty falls 10% and Cat 5 inventory drops by 25%
Details at 11. - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No doubt the coolest thing i've seen in awhile
- NeCtUr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6looks like 5 gauge wire rather than cat5.
still frickin sweet though - tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Jebus, this isn't Slashdot man, relax. You need to get ahold of your flavin.
- thekubrix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Thats NOT Cat5 cable. Its ordinary copper wire of varying gauge.
- NetCaptive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+4Agreed, not Cat 5... Even the cables inside are too thin for this kind of work. Still cool and worth a digg.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3basik owns you
- johnnybravoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5how do you say "*****" in Russian?
- sergeb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If I still can read Russian (and I can :) those are made from a telephone wire, not cat5.
- PrayerNeeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is defintetly not 5 gage wire. American wire gage numbers decrease as the wire diameter increases. a 5 gage wire would be 4.62026 mm diameter - not fun stuff to bend.
http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm
AWG 24 the size of wires inside cat 5. It's about 1/2mm in diameter. Looking at the pictures with rulers, it looks like the wires used are 1/2 to 1mm wide. The variance could be explained by insulation, but it's as likely that the artist used other wire, depending on his source. Note the lack of any discernable stripes on the wires. No blue/white stripe. No red/white stripe. etc. also, the photo showing the wire unmodified, shows it as a group of so many single strands. If I wanted to claim Cat5 as source material, I sure would have shown the assembled wire (with or without jacks).
But it's pretty freaking cool nonetheless! - snark42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Coral Cache is always good, m'kay? - http://basik.ru.nyud.net:8080/default.asp?id=2066
- bigpru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have put them up on my flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/bigpru/sets/72057594082977254/
- ivanjs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Freakin' awesome. He should now take these and do a stop motion action movie.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Russia Has some pretty crazy looking cat 5 cable.
- papageorgio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Do you honestly believe that Russians don't know what an M16 looks like? Oh no... they appear to be familiar with some other weapon besides the AK-47... THEY CAN'T BE RUSSIAN!
- kloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That looks too thin to be cat 5...
- mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Holy crap, its Jesse "The Body" Ventura from Predator. Kewl.
http://www.lobzik.pri.ee/Galeries/soldier/soldier_35.jpg - KaosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To end the debate, the cable (the big bundle in the second picture down)is what is called 25pair. Its 50 individual pieces of wire that is used for multiple long distance runs to a single location (eg, feeder cable to say a 66 block)
depending on the vendor you pick you can get different color schemes. Normal color scheme has the tip wires going from
White
Red
Black
Yellow
Violet
you can remember this easily by the mnemonic device
"why run backwards you varmint"
the ring wires all follow the same pattern within each tip set
blue
orange
green
brown
slate
or "boy on girl brings satisfaction"
The cable type seems to be cat3 (which is just the spec of min 3 twists per foot, but for phone use twists don't matter)
For a reference to the poster who said he used cat5 when they didn't have phone cable, that's what all the pro's use too, my company for instance always uses cat5 so when we switch our customers from in house ksu's/pbx's to VOIP the transition is already in place for the future. - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4!
http://www.lobzik.pri.ee/Galeries/soldier/soldier_15.jpg - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Original and creative, hope he gets rewarded for it. God knows we could use a bit of that in the world.
- ender52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet, i used to make stuff like this when i was a kid. My house was within walking distance of a big dumpster behind an office building, and there were constantly random wires lying all over the place back there. It was a wire man's dream!
- KONTROL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! Way too much damn time on his hands. Damn, LOL!
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1definitely the coolest article submitted for a while. if i could digg it more than once i would. nice find! +digg
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, some of those colors are a bit odd.. looks like multiconductor telephone cable for office telephones.. I've seen it with 16 wires before (and a connector that looked like a really really big RJ-45.. it was an RJ of some sort, but I don't recall the number)
- aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great find - +digged
anyone got a link to buy these on thinkgeek yet?? - dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I guess its cool to be the cableman now....
- tdlrali, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5it's the little cables inside a cat5 cable
page is already down though - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my 10 year old cousin does the same type of thing with pipe cleaners. They are less elaborate, though. These are great!
- SoccerBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Good find... must take a lot of time to create!
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe he's an artist?
- jonrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The site says it's made from wire, not necessarily from cat5
It also doesn't say they're russian soldiers. Just soldiers.
"Soldiers made from wire" - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite are the last two, the parade soldier and the guy with the Krinkov.. neat!
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to do this in high school art class, but with wire coat hangers. Wire art has been around for years. Dugg.
- drunkJerkface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those are bad ass!
- magebomb11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GREAT
- capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, the world i so small. I actually know this guy from a russian msg board. Its amazing how these people took the pics nad never once mentioned the artist. The artist is Mikhail Moroz from Minsk. He is amazing.
- tke248, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is a translated version of the page if anyone is interested

- edzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he's good
- decades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's pretty feckin' sick. I think I'll have to give it a go. It's a shame I've just got a bunch of parallel cables. I guess I'll have to make do with chunky people ^.^
- cakesale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh my god that is ***** awesome! He is good.
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha i would have never thought of doin figures with the cables...haha man this guy has some imagination, man i would have just used to hang something....lol
