A Hello Kitty assault rifle that actually exists
i.i.com.com — Awhile back we were treated to a hilarious Photoshop job called the HK-47--an assault rifle decorated with images of everybody's favorite nonpornographic, nontentacled Japanese import, Hello Kitty. We were sad to learn that it was, well, Photoshopped. Well this one is the real deal!

- lawrra, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3The assault rifles ban was lifted. You can buy an M16, M4, M14, AK47, or AR15 (semi-auto only) at the age of 18 by showing nothing more than a driver's license and a quick background check being performed. Now you can purchase the automatic models if you have a class 3 firearms license.
- sassafras1232, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7Unless you live in California, or some other more restrictive state.
- AntzNZ, on 01/18/2008, -15/+8WTF, you just need to be 18 and you can buy an assault rifle? Holy crap. You don't even need a firearms license in the U.S? That is really quite ***** up.
- radu79, on 01/18/2008, -1/+18It's ok, because you can't buy beer until you are 21.
- PsychoI3oy, on 01/18/2008, -2/+19'Assault Rifle' is a term for a select fire (i.e. fully automatic or multi-round-burst) rifle of an 'intermediate caliber' (not defined here).
The AR-15s, AK variants, M4-style AR-15s (as long as the barrel is >=16"), etc that you can buy with proof of ID at age >=18 and a simple background check are all semi-automatic. One trigger pull = one bullet. Many 'hunting rifles' function just the same.
Beware the term 'assault weapon' which was coined in the early 90s as a term to mean "semi-auto firearms that happen to look like assault rifles or other military rifles and may have scary things like bayonet lugs, flash suppressors or pistol-grip stocks". There is no actual definition for 'assault weapon' like there is for 'assault rifle', mostly because it was a scare tactic term.
So, no, you cannot buy a real 'assault rifle' at age 18. You can, however, at age 21 become a federally anal-probed class 3 licensee and own (after a 3-6 month background check including fingerprints) fully-automatic firearms manufactured prior to 1986. Said firearms tend to have 5 digit price tags (Colt M16 [i.e. true assault rifle version of the AR-15] ~= $16k+) and are usually pretty hard to find. They are however quite fun to shoot :) - Pixelante, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Move to Switzerland and they'll give you one almost free of charge when you hit 18. Free, good training included in the price. Play with high explosives, grenades, rocket launchers. They even do RL firefights with laser simulators. 6 months of carefree fun. You even get to wear a nice Starship Troopers-like dress uniform.

Do tell, where exactly are you finding $100 AKs? Oh, and do tell, do you even grasp that the parts between a semi-auto AK and a full auto AK are quite different? That you would need to replace more than just a single part? And that, in converting your rifle to full auto, you've committed a crime than can get you put in jail for 10 years? Do yourself a favor and don't open your mouth until you know what you're talking about.

- adraft, on 01/18/2008, -4/+4Err, check your facts. For a majority of "assault" rifles you have to be 21.

- shig, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2You could always purchase full-autos with a class 3. The sunset did nothing to change that. A class 3 FFL and a $200 tax stamp can get you a fully automatic Colt M4 with a silencer. Convert it to Whisper .300 and you'll have you-self a SOPMOD on the level of a Special Forces wet dream. All perfectly legal and could be obtained within a 6 month time span even during ban.
God Bless the USA.
- j0hnc0ry, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6You cannot buy a M-16, M-14, or M-4 (without a class 3). You can buy a semi-auto AK-47, AR-15 (several different builds some resembling M4's), or M1A (civilian M14). Just because someone is 18 doesn't mean they can walk up and buy automatic (burst) rifles (all of the "M" rifles you mentioned).
- cawpin, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Class 3 is a dealer license, not a consumer license. For a civilian to buy a fully automatic firearm they must pay a$200 tax, on each gun, and the gun must have been manufactured, or converted to full auto, before 1986.

After a few giggles, class would proceed. Fear of firearms is inane. What we really need to be afraid of are the criminal assholes wielding said firearms in anger. Being a gun owner, I worry that the time when I will be injured or kiled in a criminal act will be those times when the law mandates that I may not protect myself.

- Tenlow, on 01/18/2008, -1/+23No. You can only use single shot bolt action rifles for that. And you can only wear blue shoes on tuesday. Both ideas make just as much sense. Arbitrary rules that accomplish nothing and make no sense if you pay attention to them. Just because it's not the best solution to the task at hand, doesn't mean it can't be used for it.
Plus there's the "just for fun" factor you're ignoring. I've shot a few guns quite a few times in my day, and I've yet to shoot at a person or animal. It is however fun like woah.- Spuy767, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Amen. The AR is a VERY versatile rifle used widely in competition shooting. Also, a lot of people do use it to hunt. If you knew anything about guns, you would know they haven't changed much in about 80 years (except for adding plastic). Laws restricting guns because they "look scary" are ludicrous. The past summer, IL was debating if they should ban the .50 BMG, a big scary rifle that claimed zero lives in IL.- kahlessreborn, on 01/18/2008, -18/+12It has nothing to due with that a .50 rifle can slice through anything cept an APC or Above.
- Tenlow, on 01/18/2008, -1/+25No, actually it has everything to do with the scare factor. When the .50 BMG was banned, Barrett came out with the .416 round, which is far more "lethal" than the BMG ever was. But it's perfectly legal because it's a rechambered .50 BMG rifle. Somehow more lethal = safer.
- Spuy767, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4Not necessarily more lethal, merely more accurate at greater distances. In the hands of an accomplished marksman, definitely more lethal.
- Tenlow, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Sorry, that's the point I was trying to make.
- Spuy767, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Sry, was just giving you *****.
- cawpin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4The 50 was only banned in the communist state of California, not nationwide.
- Spuy767, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4Not necessarily more lethal, merely more accurate at greater distances. In the hands of an accomplished marksman, definitely more lethal.
- Dedpoet, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The argument always used with respect to the .50 ban is that this cartridge can "shoot airplanes out of the sky." Never mind that a skilled shooter with a well-maintained rifle, carefully hand-loaded rounds, a scope costing upwards of $1000 easily, a bench rest, and a lot of time can hold groups of around 6-10" at 1000 yards on a stationary target. If Johnny Terrorist with his $6000 Barret rifle could calculate the trajectory necessary to hit a plane 2 miles in the air traveling 500mph, he should rethink his line of work because he is the best rifleman who never lived.

- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -20/+8I don't think 80 years ago you could snipe someone through a foot of concrete more than a mile away with a thermal scope.
- Theoxenmooving, on 01/18/2008, -3/+22I don't think you could do that 80 years from now, either.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -6/+8Ok, it may be 8 inches of concrete (either 8 or 12 according to my memory), but it exists right now and it's a lot different from anything 80 years old. What exactly do you find so hard to believe, a mile away, through concrete, or thermal scope? I'll try to find a link for you.
The Barrett M107 can take out a light truck from a mile away...- Spuy767, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4With depleted uranium ammunition only available to the military. LRN 2 Ballistics.
- oxilite, on 01/18/2008, -0/+0the thing about thermal scopes is that they can only see heat that they can actually see. Its not an x ray... so unless your body is radiating heat that is sufficient enough to heat all 12 inches of that concrete to be much hotter than the rest of the wall, you are not going to see a difference.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -4/+7I'm not sure this is the sniper rifle I was talking about but It looks capable to me. BTW I have a friend from school who's personally shot the gun I was talking about.
"The M82 easily penetrates Type IV body armor and most commonly occurring building materials. With its added power due to its scale, the M82 is among those rifles that can additionally pierce hard armors and level 8 ballistic glass (considered the strongest available)."
"The long effective range, over 1500 m with a record shot of 2500 m, along with high energy and availability of highly effective ammunition such as API and Raufoss Mk 211, allows for effective operations against targets like radar cabins, trucks, parked aircraft and so on. The M82 can also be used to defeat human targets from standoff range or when targets are behind cover"
It can take out a freaking aircraft!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M82_Barrett_rifle- radu79, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6Yes, but a thermal scope won't see through walls or most of the solid objects (except for glass and stuff).
- oxilite, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1No, even glass will stop thermal scopes. That is why when you look at someone's face who is wearing glasses, they look like they have huge black spots on their eyes. See my comment above.
- Mothrog, on 01/18/2008, -2/+2It can take out an aircraft? Right. Let me know when that actually happens.
- lawrra, on 01/18/2008, -1/+11That's a light truck...All the bullet has to do is enter the engine block and it's done. A .308 with the right round could do the same at a shorter distance. Shooting concrete and expecting the bullet to continue through several inches on the same trajectory, without fragmenting, is a little bit much to ask for.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3Lawrra, if you think that's a little bit much to ask for, you should see some other other stuff the US military can do.
"That report focused particularly on the dangers presented by the 50 caliber heavy sniper rifles, noting that these powerful weapons of war present a "whole new order of threat" by their ability to "knock down aircraft, including helicopters, and *punch through concrete block*, armored vehicles, and other materials *that may be relied upon for executive protection*." These devastating features are exactly why Barrett 50 caliber heavy sniper rifles, for example, are in the armories of U.S. Marine Corps snipers and at least 17 other armies around the world."
http://www.vpc.org/press/0301bird.htm .- lawrra, on 01/18/2008, -1/+8Of course it can go through concrete, but retaining the original trajectory is doubtful; it's physics. I don't doubt what it is capable of, but the accuracy after shooting through a foot of concrete is less than desirable. Shooting down aircraft is easily understandable. You just have to aim for an engine or rotor and pull the trigger. I know some of the "other stuff" the military can do. BTW I have several friends that are trained military personnel and have been informed over and over of this weapon's capabilities. Just because a weapon has the capability doesn't mean that it's practical.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -5/+1Well it does it, it probably takes special ammunition designed specifically for going through the concrete and getting the kill, but it does it. Ask your friends.
I never said it was practical, however it is practical in the right circumstances. My whole point was that guns have not stayed the same for the last 80 years. - masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -7/+2And if I remember, it may fragment producing a shotgun effect...
- spritom, on 01/18/2008, -1/+12True, thermal scopes did not exist 80 years ago. However, I believe the point of this sub-thread is the .50BMG. If you were familiar with firearms, you might know that the .50BMG chambering has been around for more than 80 years.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -4/+1I'll agree the concept or principle of a gun hasn't changed much. But sorry, I just don't think it's accurate to say guns haven't changed besides plastic. I highly doubt you would agree to a gun duel where you get an 80 year old gun and your opponent gets top of the line technology us civilians don't even know exits yet. Or even the new stuff we do know exists for that matter.
- SirFlatulence, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Do thermal scopes that can see through concrete really even exist now? They've been in the movies since "blue thunder" from the early 80s, but I've never been able to find a reference to a real one.
- masterm1nd, on 01/18/2008, -4/+1Yes. http://www.imaging1.com/thermal/specterIR.html .
- SirFlatulence, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2Nope.
That one can see in the dark, it can't see through walls.
- cawpin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Up until Desert Storm, the record for the longest sniper kill was 2500 yards with a .50 BMG machine gun designed in 1932. Just because it's old doesn't mean it isn't accurate. That machine gun model is still used by the US military.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning_machine_g ... - spritom, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2"I highly doubt you would agree to a gun duel where you get an 80 year old gun and your opponent gets top of the line technology"
It depends on what you're looking to do. A highly preferred handgun for spec ops today is the 1911 which was designed the year of it's name. For shoulder-fired subguns, we were on heavy 1st generation stuff with the Thompsons 80 years ago, which are highly effective. I'm kinda partial to the Uzi, but I'll defer to the next generation of closed-bolt subguns that came about in the 50's-60's. Subguns are nicer today, but not measurably more effective. Modern battle rifles also matured around the 60's and haven't moved fundamentally since then. Machinegun technology has moved a little, but the Ma Deuce is still in service today from when Browning designed it in the 20's from the model 1919.
But back to sniping and the 80-year discussion. It's an interesting topic. Sure, the modern versions of the Remington 700 and the Accuracy Intl rifles are very nice. But a 03 Springfield in good condition (105 years old) would suffice quite well. And I doubt anybody will argue with Simo Häyhä's preference for the Mosin-Nagant (117 years old). Simo didn't even want/use a scope. Though some 500+ people did try to argue with Simo...his argument won them over.
- Theoxenmooving, on 01/18/2008, -3/+22I don't think you could do that 80 years from now, either.

- brad3378, on 01/18/2008, -6/+5I could be wrong, but is it legal to paint the barrel of a real gun to look like a toy?
- Randrayla, on 01/18/2008, -3/+11In most non-commie states yes it is.
- ManicA, on 01/18/2008, -10/+3Why wait until it's used to kill someone? Does someone really have to die to get legislation in place?
- Pigeon, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8People kill people. Guns don't.
- Spuy767, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7Machetes don't kill people; people kill people. How come you don't hear that phrase more often? Just because technology exists that makes it slightly easier for that psychopath to kill you doesn't mean that he wouldn't bash your ***** skull in with a rock if he couldn't get his hands on a gun.
- WarMachineWCLH, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Whenever anyone makes the "Why buy a gun if you can't hunt with it" agruement I know I'm talking to someone that has zero knowledge of firearms. Most "assault" rifles use a bullet that is smaller and carries significantly less energy at impact than the kind of bullet you'd want to use to effectivly kill most medium to large game.
Look here for a picture:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rifle_cartrid ...
The .308 (3rd from Left) is your standard round used in the average military sniper or hunting rifle. It's what you'd want if you were hunting deer.
The 5.56 NATO (2nd from right) is the round used in M-16s, M-4's, the whole AR-15 line of rifles.- iamtheguyy, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1yeah...the deer rifles are much more capable of outright killing "light/medium game animals" which includes deer, mountain goats, and humans...the smaller .223 round was designed to injure and incapacitate rather than one shot instant kills like the heavier guns.
- cawpin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Read the first sentence again. He's talking about you.
- WarMachineWCLH, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1You sir are correct.
- WarMachineWCLH, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The idea that someone designed the .223 to wound and not kill is a myth. Anyone that believes that doesn't know a single thing about the way our military thinks. The fact is the reason we switched to the .223 from the .30 round was someone figured out that the .30 wasn't needed to kill someone so by moving to a smaller round we could carry more ammo and still effectively kill an adversary. An M-14 fires .308 and holds 20 rounds in a magazine and an M-16 holds 30 rounds. Given the average load out of 16.2lbs of gear that means you can hold 100 rounds of .308 vs 240 rounds of .223 and that's really the reason they went to the smaller round. They probably would have went even smaller if it could have be counted on to reliably kill the target.

- Apollyon0810, on 01/18/2008, -1/+0Hasn't changed much in 80 years? How long do you think this thing has been around? The AR first debuted in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines. And they all had plastic moldings. But yeah... this gun looks awesome. I would take it to the range with me. Use it to pick up chicks.
- kahlessreborn, on 01/18/2008, -18/+12It has nothing to due with that a .50 rifle can slice through anything cept an APC or Above.
- afdlips, on 01/18/2008, -7/+22Perfect for shooting kitties.

- yetAnotherCroc, on 01/18/2008, -0/+26Seriously? Someone who shows up to a fight with a pink Hello Kitty rifle would scare me witless. He is obviously badass enough to not care at all what anyone thinks and probably brought the hello kitty rifle just to mess with my mind.
- Azselendor, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3not only would it be the most terrifying moment of your life, but when your friends found out they'd endless ridicule you for it.
- geofftsjy, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Its probably a GREAT idea to use the hello kitty rifle... I mean the other peeps can't possible shoot very straight if they are laughing uncontrollably at you...
- GODsPC, on 01/18/2008, -2/+8I don't care what color it is, it's still a ***** assault riffle. Just because its pink doesn't mean it shoots bubbles and love.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 01/18/2008, -4/+2Assault rifle is a misnomer. IT is a "Battle Rifle" as it does nothing to assault you without the wielder doing something.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2It does nothing to battle you without the wielder doing something either..
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1But it is used for battle, not necessarily assault. The adjective is meant to make it seem more menacing. However, it is incorrect.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2It does nothing to battle you without the wielder doing something either..

- trustydrip, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5well, I'm not sure if you are serious or not (for your sake I hope you aren't), but spreading gross, fabricated, and horribly inaccurate propaganda like this is sick and twisted. This doesn't even have anything to do with the picture unless you are saying that he Jews are responsible for putting Hello Kitty on an AR, and in that case deserve a high five, not death. Do you think that your extremism is different than any one else's extremism, that you are held to a different standard because you believe you are superior (you aren't in case this is confusing for you). And if you are just dicking around, it's not funny and its time to invest in a new sense of humor.
