- Aharoni, on 10/21/2007, -10/+140If Microsoft wants to really give iPod a run for its money they should try to differentiate itself as much as possible, go through the criticism about the iPod and make it better. For example, a detachable battery like in cell-phones. The iPod is a fashion accessory? make Zune faceplates! Why buy a black, white or red Zune when I can change the color every day? you can make games' faceplates and provide them in Limited Editions, you can have known designers create special faceplates (to truly make it a fashion accessory) and more.
I can understand why Microsoft limits the allowed plays of transferred material to 3, since otherwise the Zune would basically become a P2P network for MP3s... but they can compensate in other ways... I'd love to see some sort of software that can be set up in a wifi hotspot that would communicate with the Zune, that could stream music and even sell songs. Think about it, when you go to a concert you bring your Zune with you, connect to the hub and simply stream and record the show live... or, if you liked a specific song you could purchase it on the fly. More revenue for the band, more revenue for Microsoft! - merdiesel, on 10/18/2007, -9/+80I'm glad MS didn't just give up on the Zune... If they keep up at this pace I imagine their next Zune should actually put somewhat of a fight against the Ipod. Competition is always good.
- inactive, on 10/18/2007, -5/+6899% of the world called. they dont give a ***** about flac. Now DivX video support would have jumping with an orgasm.
- theinept, on 10/21/2007, -5/+54What I don't understand is that every blog and/or preview of the new Zune mentions lukewarm responses from other blogs and/or previews but the general sentiment here and on message forums has been very positive. Reviewers may be stuck in iPod or bust mode but people seem generally accepting of the new Zunes and there's actually a bit of excitement building, which is almost unheard of for Microsoft products.
- meltingrobot, on 10/15/2007, -7/+34Also, adding support for open source formats like flac would pretty much guarantee I would buy one.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+40If you call a crippled phone without ability to place calls and far less storage space innovation, then yes..
- marspidey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28MS also needs to start marketing. I haven't seen any commercials about the Zune and that is a major downfall. They've done a good job with Vista, Halo 3, 360 and now they need to put more effort into getting Zune into people's heads through the media.
- mrspin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Good points: battery and faceplates!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -20/+38Innovative? hardly
- DROWE859, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18If it is plugged up to a wall socket or dock it will automatically sync. But you can also sync wirelessly without being plugged up by prompting it.
From Gizmodo:
"Wireless syncing will automatically sync one minute after activity is stopped as long as you're in Wi-Fi range and attached to a power source (dock, AC adapter). You can manually trigger the Wi-Fi sync as well even without being connected to power."
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/zune/more-zune-2-detail ... - KayIslandDrunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I use my Zune 1st Gen to play music on my 360 all the time so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
- thedez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Naw, what would really help Microsoft is if they dropped $100 off each model and totally undercut the market. You know they can. This is Microsoft we're talking about.
It would be awesome and infuriating at the same time. - KayIslandDrunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Remember its the xbox people that designed the Zune, the Zune is maturing just like the xbox. 1st Gen -> so-so. 2nd Gen -> Much better. 3rd Gen -> ?
As someone who has an xbox, 360, Zen, iPod, and Zune I look forward to all major improvements. - awp0, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20I find it interesting that everyone is bashing wireless sync. I'm really psyched for this feature along with the UI, which looks beautiful IMO. In fact, I bought a Zune 1 for $99 on Woot yesterday for these and the MCE integration.
My MCE server sits in the basement. It's too early to tell how it'll work specifically, but the idea of pulling new TV shows to it wirelessly while I get ready for work in the morning is pretty sweet. And for $99 it's pretty hard to go wrong. - pumacub, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19In regards to customer relations, Microsoft is becoming far less evil while Apple just gets more and more so. The new Zunes, the Amazon MP3 store... I think we'll soon reach a tipping point where Apple's domination in portable music starts to dissolve rapidly.
- SWGreg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11The Zune can wirelessly sync without being docked, however it is not done automatically to conserve battery life.
- pumacub, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10When do you turn 12?
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I think it's pretty simple if you are looking to spend about $300 on an MP3 player, if you need about 80GB or less Zune > Class 80, if you need a ridiculous amount of space classic 160, and if you don't need that much space/want web browser and possible hackage Touch.
- totorototoro, on 10/15/2007, -2/+12#5 should be #1...supporting the loyal Zune 1 owners with the firmware update thing.
- chibimmy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Wow, posted the comment on both the article and the digg. Way to fail it up Eric mah boy.
- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -2/+12Buried because I don't like you.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9More people have Swtiched to Vista than run OSX or GNU/Linux. Sorry, your fanboy FUD is broken.
- ButchyFuego, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Actually it's not called Zune 2, it is called Zune 80, 30, etc.
- hellathatguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11***** hilarious. flac is fine if that's your scene but seriously i think i'd need a player that had a terrabyte of space to hold all those ***** files.
- wookme, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18I need to replace my 30gb ipod soon and this might be the device.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Apple should definitely take a hint with backward compatibility/legacy device support. Apple has the reputation of doing opposite: releasing new products and making you buy more. But for now, the fanboys haven't caught on and continue to throw their money at Apple every holiday season, so I guess it's working. I for one really appreciate long term support and firmware updates for older devices.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"Support of Podcasts?"
I don't get it...what are you saying, or trying to say? - killtherebel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11THE ZUNE IS NOT A PHONE!!! Why even compare them?
- jmo14, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15I guess I don't understand why people get negative about a good product. Saying it should have had it from beginning is completely irrelevant now. The fact is they fixed recognized problems, made what seems to be overall a great and attractive product, and are making for some exciting competition. I do not think it will put a huge dent in iPod market share but it shows that good things can come from Redmond, and that is good for both companies as far as pushing innovation goes.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -13/+21That article inspire me enough to buy one now. I have to admit they look pretty sexy.
- shawnanigans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8And replaced it with an equally awesome green colour.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8MS doesnt give up. The hammered themselves into the PDA market and it will try that here too. they no their software division is not going to be a cash cow for long because when you are number one there is only one way to go. There are using the cash ti basically take over all your entertainment needs.
- lacronicus, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7the zunes drm management is no worse than the ipods, and it offers a subscription service, which id take any day over a pay per track offer.
- jerrycan, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14hello. You have reached typical hardcore Apple fanboy. I can`t comment right now as I have Steve Job`s Dick in my mouth, but if you kindly leave a link to the Apple DIGG article I can comment on, I will finish up as soon as possible.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14How about blue tooth stereo headphones , more storage (80gb is not enough) and some support for xvid.
- gollo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Cause iPod Generation 2,3,etc is so much easier to identify
- a3r0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You fail math
- Jargonaut06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That would be awesome, especially if I had a friend that had a Zune.
- cool8man, on 10/21/2007, -2/+8Didn't even mention the fact that they added touch controls.
- darthsnoopy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Hmm.. I just thought of something reading this...
I could have a zune in a dock hooked to my tv in another room...it syncs while in the dock...then i use the zune remote to use it on my tv....and now the zune does everything the 'apple tv' does..right? I mean it wirelessly remotes my music, pictures, and videos to my tv, even extending my media center stuff? - op12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Actually, because of the sluggishness of the new UI on the classic, I'm not bothered by the fact that there isn't an update for my 5.5 - given the choice I wouldn't update it anyways. It doesn't seem like the latest update has fixed the issue for most people.
- psychoace, on 10/10/2007, -1/+71. Priced higher than competing iPod models. Granted, the difference is only 99 cents but Zune needs to be cheaper than iPod.----------------------- Yeah but you get Fm Radio and WiFi for 99cents more
2. No web browser. ---------------------Neither does the Ipod and it's a music player
3. Proprietary desktop Zune application. Make it work with Windows Media Player.--------------ITunes?
4. Cannot purchase music via Wi-Fi. Actually, Microsoft should do one better and offer podcast syncing and video purchase over Wi-Fi.---------- I find this good cause the only way I see it is the Zune would need to store my login to my Urge account since there is no keyboard. This would give anyone that "found" my Zune ample access to buy music on my dime.
5. At the end of the day, Zune 2 is an attempt at catching up to the latest iPod models. Aside from few features (e.g., FM radio, Wi-Fi syncing & squiring, Microsoft audio and video formats), it fails to innovate.------------Not something they did bad it's just your opinion and since you haven't touched a Zune I expect your opinion to not be very knowledgeable. - Fratm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It amazes me how many people actually don't READ the entire article, or at least read it and comprehend it.
FYI: It can sync when not docked or charging, it just doesn't automatically do it. - uberfu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10#6 - They got rid of the "Awesome" Brown Color
- marspidey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Zune already connects to the 360.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How can do it from the beggining when it is the beginning. Its like saying apple should have done..... Oh wait, apple doesnt do any good ***** except for packing things up in a pretty box.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Archo's line of portable media players decodes divx/xvid natively and has removable batteries. check em out.
- wageslaven, on 10/26/2007, -3/+8The ipod was and always will be a Diamond RIO PMP300 knockoff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_PMP300 - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Apple innovates? Forking BSD and building a Rio isnt exactly innovation son. In reality, we all know that technology companies adopt competitors features -- its called competition.
Look familiar? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_PMP300
Good competitors steal, great ones steal the fastest, completely and thoroughly. That is true of *ANY* company or industry. - Chicken2nite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6@ MacParrot: Try operating a touch screen without looking at it. 2 words: Tactile Feedback.
Also, what's up with the lack of PDA functionality? Now THAT is innovative for a touch screen interface, the inability to type and save text. -
