- myFriendDerrik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23For the love of god, PODCAST SUPPORT!!!
- ahamster, on 10/10/2007, -12/+34I'm totally psyched for the new update. FINALLY! (It better not be a small fix)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+32Got my zune for $130 used, works great for me! Bigger screen, cheaper than an ipod, reliable unlike any other non apple mp3 player. pretty well built. plays all my ripped ***** just fine.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26I am genuinely curious to see what Microsoft is going to introduce in the Zune 2.
They must have something special planned, right? Something that strongly differentiates it from anything out there today? - bovox, on 10/30/2007, -13/+28The Zune is a perfect example of a device designed by committee. It is what happens when "the suits" (administrators, accountants, project managers with MBAs) sweep aside the knowledge and insight of professional designers and treat them like second class citizens. I know for a fact that Microsoft has an army of very talented and bright young designers, yet it is painfully obvious that they choose to completely ignore them. My guess is that these "suits" believe that design is nothing but eye candy and an after thought.
Frankly, the people in charge and calling the shots should be the people with the MFAs, not MBAs. Apple "gets it", how come Microsoft, with its vast reservoirs of cash can't? - consonance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Microsoft generally hasn't been very good at keeping secrets, so chances are we'll know before Wednesday.
- Tenlow, on 10/30/2007, -11/+23I'm surprised there are so many zune users on digg.
I actually kinda want one, I've heard nothing but good from the people i know who bought one. - razrielle, on 10/30/2007, -3/+14fanboiism=*****.
- K3ITHK, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I didn't realize Sony made iPods.
- geoken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Do you seriously think there's a chance in hell of that happening?
- cpare, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Lets hope this isn't just someone showing an image on a Zune screen - I have see that before...
- jnadke, on 10/30/2007, -10/+18I commend Microsoft for porting Zune 2 software to the 2.1.
It's nice to know they don't screw over their old users like Apple does. - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -9/+16How about for people who are not blinded by apple fanboyism that want a solid player with a bigger screen(Sans ipod touch, which has less storage) and cheaper price
- gronne, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I had one and did end up selling it for an iPod. It's a really solid device. The biggest downside was the closed ecosystem with little to no content in that ecosystem. I spent a lot of time converting video podcasts to WMV, categorizing audio podcasts in playlists and, the final straw, ripping my Audible downloads to CD, then back to MP3 and onto the Zune. If it would have had podcast support, TV shows and Audible support, I would have much preferred it over my 5.5 Gen iPod. I don't know anyone that's really that psyched about the iPod touch or the iTunes Wi-Fi so I think Microsoft has a really good shot to make a leap forward here. We'll just have to see if they do that or just play catch up. I'm eager to see.
- MagicCake, on 10/30/2007, -9/+15I've used an iPod, I've used a Zune. I like the Zune better. That's just how it is.
And what kind of retarded, juvenile comment was that with the "free tea-bagging"? Come on man. - fenixconnektion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I believe the proper alternative term is NetCast.
Don't look at me, it was Leo Laporte's idea. - w1bmw, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5 I misplaced my 80G 5.5Gen video iPod this summer and had given it up for stolen around the same time woot.com was offering the Zune for $149. Not wanting to spend $350+ on another mp3 player I might lose, I jumped. There were a few things different, wasn't too nuts about the software, but all in all, I was pleased with the purchase.
A month ago, my iPod turned up. Now? I use 'em both, taking which ever one I lay my hands on in the morning. They both work fine for me, though in the car, the audio on the iPod is just louder...but, the Zune video is smoother, less prone to freezing. The iPod battery lasts longer, but the Zune charges quicker. Honestly? I don't get the fanboy hype for either. They're ***** MP3 players, for christ sakes. Go buy what works for you and quit worrying about what other people think.
As to the original article? I'm very happy to see this in the works. It'd be nice to stream net radio to my Zune while wandering around the house, especially after the kids are in bed... anyone got a copy of the features they're adding yet? - grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11I disagree. To me it is a brilliant device that made it to legal who decided that it was a good idea to waste the WiFi thing by not allowing wireless sync, and to not offer a mass storage driver. The hardware itself was clean, and if they had the balls to stand up to universal, a firmware update could probably fix most of the complaints with even the current gen.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Um, Apple DID send out a software upgrade with most the interface tweaks for the 5.5G iPods to the 5G owners....
- socket, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8So how does that Apple Kool-Aid taste bovox?
Microsoft managed to put a 1/2 decent product out in a short amount of time. Anyone who expected it to be an "Ipod killer" was high on crack. Regardless of everything MS and the Zune has going against them the product is being fairly well received in an Apple dominated market.
To assert you have any clue about the Zune design process smacks of the stereotypical Apple fan-boy *****. The social music aspect has been a complete flop yes. But it wasn't a bad idea considering the importance of socially driven marketing in this day and age (see MySpace). Now that MS understand the music "squirting" concept is dead they can use the Wi-Fi for something cool... hopefully.
Lets face reality here fan-boy. The Ipod is consistently losing market share to competition. As of January 2007 the Ipod's markets share is down to 72.%. Losing ground mostly to SanDisk and Microsoft. Apple is not the only game in town anymore... and it's not the best device for everyone. I own a Zune and I like my Zune because my Zune suits my needs. I don't like Ipod's for many reasons... I don't like Apple in general because of people like you. The whole metrosexual look how trendy my overpriced Apple ***** is get on my nerves. Sure Apple makes good stuff... but my god it can't replace having a real life people.
I wish MS would take some cues from Apple for the Zune, as I wish Apple would do the same for the Ipod... and both of them would get off their asses and beat the music industry into DRM free music. - Haishuva, on 10/30/2007, -13/+17Some could say the same about your feelings towards Microsoft. The zune is just as capable as the iPod, and twice as durable. The only disadvantage is the size, and the PC software. . .
- Punisher2K, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4Dumbest comment ever. Look up the meaning of sheeple and try to comment again.
- gn0stik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Well here's hoping, they're not verizon after all.
- 12340987, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8I notice the zune phone is never going to happen.
- iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5A squircle instead of a circle as the main button interface thing, for one thing. Read up on some of the other recent engadget posts for more information about the soon-to-be-infamous squircle.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6please, no more clocks. there is a clock on everything these days. i hate having to change them all for daylight savings. and the ones that can change themselves, i have to patch because of the changes in daylight savings.
- Dohko_Xar, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4What??? The only tweaks that the new firmware had was volume limit and brightness. Oh my, so many features, where do I start to play with them?
- ricodued, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I think what he meant was the second generation of Microsoft hardware kills the competitors. Which may be true of the Xbox and mice and keyboards, but I doubt the Zune can or will ever overtake the iPod which has become so popular the brand is ever ingrained into our popular culture. In my high school rule book, iPods are specifically mentioned by name, separate from "MP3 players". iPods are big, and save for some catastrophic disaster, forever will be.
- razrielle, on 10/30/2007, -2/+6i think for a first attempt Microsoft did a damn good job on the Zune. I like having the tactile feedback from the buttons so i can skip and pause songs without taking the thing out of my pocket, it dosnt scratch up as eaily as the iPod, and it has a radio so that if theres a certain radio segment i listen to [i.e. love line] i dont have to pull out a whole separate device.
- geoken, on 10/30/2007, -10/+14I'm sure all 4 of the people who haven't heard that joke 1000 times are cracking up.
- cdiggy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Front Row comes with all Macs that ship with a remote control. No remote? No Front Row. Photo Booth comes with all Macs that ship with a built-in iSight camera. No built-in cam? No Photo Booth. Makes sense actually, unless you failed 1st grade.
- Torx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I found the build log!
"v2.1 - Added clock. Now shut the ***** up!!!" - Plezops, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5seeing as how theres probably not another Zune within a mile it would be just another feature that no one uses... (my brother bought a Zune... its being used as a paperweight)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Ain%27t_Gonna_Nee ... - chriskeyes, on 10/10/2007, -8/+11I bought a new Zune a few months ago, and I love it!
It has a bigger screen, radio, changeable backgrounds, WiFi, better UI, cheaper, better durability, option for a subscription service on their music store, better integration with the 360, and a bazillion other things.
It definitely still needs work though, and I hope Zune 2.0 lives up to expectations, considering how the market still treats the Zune like it's nothing. Compared to my flimsy iPod that still has trouble syncing.
I'm glad I gave the Zune a try, I might never go back if their as reliable as this. - Yang1205, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5How was life under the rock?
- soopafly, on 10/10/2007, -11/+14Just wait. The Microsoft "R&D" department is still taking apart the iPhone.
- razrielle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5with a radio
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3they added DivX support in some of their devices so yes hell has frozen over.
- daines88, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Microsoft has been making a lot of good decisions lately, especially this (at least in my mind) releasing new firmware for the original Zune to give it all the feature of the new one. Why can't Apple be like this? It bugs me so much that as soon as Apple releases a new iPod they stop all development on the old one! Seriously, why couldn't they give us search on the 5G model (was only on the 5.5).
Anyway, Apple discussion aside I can't wait to see what the Zune 2.0 offers! - mikehill33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2RSS support!
- mrpither, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5nah, if they come out with a zune phone, then people will hack it to make it better. then they'd have to push out an update to turn the hacked zune phones into bri-
oh.... - vdgmr1213, on 10/30/2007, -7/+9I bought a Zune shortly after it's release because I was in need of a new MP3 player, yet didn't feel like joining everyone in the iPod craze. Its a great music player, and as a whole I think it does much better than any iPod. I'm not saying its the best, but for organized music based on the content, not random playlists created, it beats the iPod. Just because its an MS product doesn't make it evil. iPods are not the be all and end all of MP3 players. It just happens that iPods have a HUGE audience and already built in user base, leaving little room for other devises. I will have to say, my biggest disappointment with the Zune has been the lack of 3rd party support for accessories. There is an "i" anything these days, all feeding of the iPod hype, but I can't find a single Zune alarm clock radio! Hopefully I'll see an improvement with the Zune 2, at least if MS cares to increase market share at all.
- soopafly, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5How about a "Find another Zune within a mile" feature so that you could swap Smash Mouth wmv files
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6ugh, can't people just buy what they want? does everyone have to drive the same car or wear the same clothes?
- potterboy, on 10/30/2007, -4/+6WTH?
- Billions, on 10/30/2007, -3/+5What's a "What's a Zune?" comment?
