- doubleblack, on 02/05/2008, -46/+213Most worthless announcement ever, we are happy to announce SP1 is now FINISHED! But we aren't going to give it to you for another month and a half...
- benitojuarez, on 02/05/2008, -9/+120Yeah because you know IT departments never ever need advance notice to get ready for a rollout of a service pack.
- hollywoodcole, on 02/05/2008, -5/+106"copying or moving files around your PC, your home network or your corporate network should now be much faster -- up to 50% faster in some scenarios (according to our internal tests)"
I will hold you to it Microsoft! - duo8675309, on 02/05/2008, -18/+119Cue the apple and linux fanboys to comment negatively on something that doesn't pertain to them...
- Hellman109, on 02/05/2008, -8/+71Just remember SP1 apparently kills the OEM BIOS hack and a the grace period reset trick. Therfore if you use any of the common methods on pirate versions it may not work after you install SP1...
- roosterjm2k2, on 02/05/2008, -6/+55Because people on the internets have a grossly overinflated sense of entitlement.
- myusrnm, on 02/05/2008, -20/+65Why does everyone openly support pirate versions of software? I understand try-before-you-buy and that sort of mentality, but here you're really just robbing people of rightfully earned money, or at least what I believe to be rightfully earned money. If you truly have a use for Vista buy it. But saying it's not worth it and then using it by stealing is hypocritical. If you really don't want to pay for Vista, don't use it. Use Ubuntu, Mac OSX or whatever - it's a better way to make a substantial point and actually supports your view. Just don't steal.
- phoenixp3k, on 02/05/2008, -1/+40The only important part of this announcement is:
SP1 via download center on microsoft.com in mid-March
SP1 via automatic updates in mid-April - igeoffi, on 02/05/2008, -16/+54Vista isn't as bad as people make it seem. I'm personally using Vista and I switched over from Xp and Vista is great. Sure, Vista has its annoyances but so did Xp when we all had Windows 2000/ME/98.
- jenrzzz1, on 02/05/2008, -3/+36Also, Windows Server 2008 is coming out around that same time.
- Nossie, on 02/05/2008, -12/+45yeah but most IT departments have not installed Vista....
- jer2eydevil88, on 02/05/2008, -3/+33How about this for a fanboy response:
Ron Paul FTW, everything Microsoft sucks unless its the 360 (although we all secretly use Windows), In soviet russia Linux builds you, LOLCATS say use a Mac. - toppgun, on 02/05/2008, -4/+34as an osx and vista user i can say that i am somewhat more satisfied with vista right now than 10.5.1 but they both desperately need fixes
- travbrack, on 02/05/2008, -6/+33This is the most worthless comment ever. Microsoft has been doing RTM for a very long time.
- arjunatgv, on 02/05/2008, -2/+23You have to wait till mid-March :(. Or if you have a MSDN Subscription go and download
- iofthestorm, on 02/05/2008, -4/+24Please go back to elementary school and learn your fractions and percents, noob.
- michaelkirk, on 02/05/2008, -2/+22Now if they would only release those damn "Ultimate Extras" that were promised. Sorry Microsoft, but poker, Dream Scene, and bit locker don't justify the inflated price for the Ultimate Edition.
- kentifer, on 02/05/2008, -4/+23Vista's working alright, but vista working better?
And at least I know support is still coming. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 02/05/2008, -4/+22Yeah because you know IT departments always roll out new service packs as soon as they're released.
- haylel, on 02/05/2008, -2/+17because my xbox360 just broke.
- skyshard, on 02/05/2008, -1/+15ive reformatted many times, and talking to the indian reps takes about 5 minutes tops.
"did you purchase this copy? yes
do you have it installed on other computers? no
ok sir, please wait a moment for me to generate your code..." - estvir, on 02/05/2008, -5/+19Patch and benchmarks (Not from Microsoft) are already out and yes, it stands up to these claims.
- AlanSim, on 02/05/2008, -4/+18Anyone remember how sucky Mac OSX was when the first post-beta came out? It was way too buggy until 1-year update. Wouldn't recognize my new external speakers for IMac Rev2 and crashed alot. Vista has never been a problem for me and the SP1 RC Refresh I'm running is faster than the Gold Vista, especially in file copying, startup and waking from sleep.
- Lyanto, on 02/05/2008, -2/+16Wrong reply, sorry.
- inactive, on 02/05/2008, -0/+13If you actually paid for a copy but opt for a pirate version instead then i think i can award you a moral pass on that.
- myusrnm, on 02/05/2008, -2/+15And as a ubuntu user- i say that it has its own share of problems. They all have places to improve and all should improve.
- estvir, on 02/05/2008, -0/+13Group hug?
- frontball13, on 02/05/2008, -2/+15I play Warcraft 3 just fine on my Vista... other than the stretching due to my widescreen, but nothing can fix that.
- Auzy, on 02/05/2008, -4/+16I'm way more satisfied with Vista Sp0 then Leopard at the moment. Games don't run that fast on either anyway, XP is still the best for Gaming. Although, I hope SP1 fixes the sound skipping in Flight Simulator X.
Theres a good reason I recently quit from the Apple reseller I work at. Even applications in 10.5.1 aren't stable. And Leopard server, thus far, should never have been marked FINAL. Everything open sourced and not coded by Apple seems to work in Leopard server (like Apache). Everything coded by Apple in Leopard server, Buggy, or poorly documented.
Of all the Vista betas (I tried 2 public revs of them) and Linux distro's (I tried a lot in the past), none of these developmental OS's are nearly as buggy as leopard server (which is an embarressment to Apple, because they only need to support a very small subset of hardware). In fact, Applications in Vista public beta 2 (even internet explorer), I cant remember crashing on me, while Apple's current stable Applications in Leopard, seem to have a habit (and customers noticed it too). Safari seems to crash twice a week.
Oh, and I have to say, once you get over the changes from XP to Vista, Vista is a lot better then XP.
Oh, and I don't think Apple really wants people to code programs for their OS, considering everything on developer.apple.com is NDA, Apple hasn't released a SDK for the iPhone yet (and probably will charge for keys to code for it), and finally, they are charging for betas, so they dont want it tested. - freehunter, on 02/05/2008, -2/+13I have Vista installed on a computer with a 2.93ghz Pentium 4 with no HyperThreading and it boots up faster than XP. Installed faster than XP as well.
- vdgmr1213, on 02/05/2008, -8/+19Yet no SP3 for XP? How long does it take to get that thing finished?
- Neticule, on 02/05/2008, -9/+20as long as it doesnt turn UAC back on!
- estvir, on 02/05/2008, -2/+13You're lying. Man, are you dumb, trying to get away with a lie like that.
- fkr3, on 02/05/2008, -4/+152 is only a couple, not several. Also I'm going to go out on a limb and say there's no linux software in the top 100 selling applications.
- haylel, on 02/05/2008, -3/+13vista has never frozen on me ever... that's on your end.
- BlackKnight6, on 02/05/2008, -1/+11I can't even get Vista to freeze. I was playing Crysis, couldn't run on High with my 7900GTX (which makes perfect sense) so I kept minimizing Crysis while running Rivatuner in the background and kept slowly overclocking my video card more and more. Well I did this for 5 min and then Crysis froze and then the screen went black and nothing responded. I thought, *****, went too far, leaned over to hit the power button but then the desktop clicked back on. A window was there saying Vista shutdown and restored your video display adapter after it stopped responding. I was even able to go back to Crysis which was still running.
That's badass in my book. - MioTheGreat, on 02/05/2008, -5/+15What the ***** would compel you to disable the single most powerful tool Windows has ever given you to very precisely control the privileges given to processes?
- MioTheGreat, on 02/05/2008, -0/+10A default install of Vista has to build an index from scratch, among other "moving in" tasks.
After about 2 days, Vista shoud not be "hammering the ***** hard disk" unless you've got a bad hard disk controller driver, or your hard drive just can't handle random, infrequent, and relatively small reads without acting like a ***** jet engine. - hadak, on 02/05/2008, -1/+10...nothing?
http://warcraft.freakygaming.com/tutorials/running ... - Trixrox, on 02/05/2008, -1/+9The refresh 2 is indeed the final RTM copy....Vista SP1 and Server 2008 are back in sync. The build string of Server 2008 RTM matches the string of the current Vista SP1 that we have (6001.18000.080118-1840).
- SupaFurry, on 02/05/2008, -0/+8We don't care.
- RogerStrong, on 02/05/2008, -2/+10It always amazed me how the people who claimed that Microsoft had a monopoly were the same people who claimed that OS/2 and the Mac (and now Linux) were *better*, and had large market shares - and yet somehow they didn't see the paradox here.
There's plenty of good alternatives to Microsoft, and there always have been. There's no monopoly.
If all your favorite games are available only on Windows, it's because Microsoft is doing something right, not something wrong. - xpose, on 02/05/2008, -1/+9Thanks for the tip. What about the DELL OEM releases that are preactivated? Perhaps they will be integrated and work fine.
- natenovs, on 02/05/2008, -1/+9its called auto indexing and auto defrag. both are services you can shut off if you'd like.
- GreyICE, on 02/05/2008, -2/+9As envious as I am of your 22 megabyte per second network transfer speed, a little fairy informed me that there might be some hyperbole in your post.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/05/2008, -3/+10either your ram, or your drivers suck.
- jjustin01, on 02/05/2008, -2/+9I'm actually running SP1 Beta Refresh 1 and I have to admit, there's been a pretty big difference in perfomance in a lot of areas. While my Ubuntu install still transfers across networks a little faster, transfers on my Vista install (same laptop as Ubuntu) are just a tad slower then Ubuntu now.
The wake-up response from opening the laptop lid is a huge difference. It is now pretty much instant-on. I'm running an AMD Turion 64x2 with 2GB of RAM if it matters.
Those are primary places I've seen the biggest performance boost so far. Boot-up time still sucks ass and shutdown time is even worse. - MioTheGreat, on 02/05/2008, -0/+6Fun fact:
Server 2008 is exactly the same code as Vista SP1. In an effort to reduce the number of code bases Microsoft has to maintain, Vista SP1 and Server 2008 will literally be using the same binaries. Same kernel, same copy of explorer.exe, same copy of *.dll, same copy of *.exe, etc. - inactive, on 02/05/2008, -0/+6Cue thw linux fanboy who comments on the comment made by the windows fanboy...
- FatShady, on 02/05/2008, -1/+7Did you want to provide any sort information to back up your tinfoil hat claims, or did you just want to keep being a ***** idiot?
