- bradpurchase, on 08/08/2008, -5/+139Is it just me or has every major update lately included a new GUI?
- jimminy, on 08/09/2008, -4/+100If the program does nothing more than send and receive text messages over the internet there's really nothing else to update than the GUI (and of course change the protocol a bit to slow down those open source terrorists).
- RMoore08, on 08/09/2008, -4/+89Instant messengers are so frustrating. I wish everyone would just use ONE. Rather than have some friends on Yahoo, some on AIM, some on MSN, others on Skype.... I know there is Trillian and Gaim but still it gets frustrating, I just wish everyone would use one and make things easier. It won't happen but its just a wish. My fav so far is Skype. I just wish it would allow conference video chats.
- kckern, on 08/09/2008, -5/+59We just should just have the government pick one for everyone to use, ban all the others, and dispatch a gestapo to execute all those who try to create or use anything else. Then we'd all be happy!
- fragsta, on 08/09/2008, -0/+45Am I the only person who likes usable, compact UIs for stuff like this?
- Dumbledorito, on 08/09/2008, -5/+49While I prefer all-in-one clients (i.e. Trillian, Pidgin, etc.), they always lack some feature I want to use occasionally, like webcams or reliable file transfers.
- Embryodead, on 08/09/2008, -21/+61Sweet, they are going to make it even slower, and more OSX looking.
- HyperJack, on 08/09/2008, -6/+45The only thing they ever update is the GUI.
- sjmulder, on 08/09/2008, -3/+40Yes, and new ad features.
- Hayes, on 08/09/2008, -7/+40The only people who use AIM are American.
WLM > * - alishagg, on 08/09/2008, -5/+36I just hope changing the GUI won't slow it down like it has for the Yahoo Messenger for Vista.
- Disease, on 08/09/2008, -4/+34lol camwhore
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -1/+27Pidgin (new Gaim) is really nice for multi protocol - thanks to Pidgin i never think about other protocols.
Unfortunately, if you want a/v you'll need another client - One of my friends mentioned Gizmo. If you could get all of your A/Ving friends to use that, you'd be almost all set. - InorganicMatter, on 08/09/2008, -4/+27WPF is awesome. I don't care if it's a Windows exclusive protocol, apps made properly with WPF rival Apple's Cocoa for ease of use and application look/feel consistency. Here's hoping they do it right.
- waydee, on 08/09/2008, -2/+24AIM is only used in the states as far as I can tell
- anagoge, on 08/09/2008, -1/+21Why would you want to convince people to stop using MSN when it's actually a far more intuitive application than AIM can ever aspire to?
I still find it strange that AIM has such a huge market share in the US when in Europe, MSN dominates. - MalDON, on 08/09/2008, -0/+18If only pidgin had webcam support...
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -11/+28Actually it's been faster
And the MS Live products have always looked better than OSX.
I mean its not like Apple's MobileMe... this thing actually works! - noPCtoday, on 08/09/2008, -0/+17For those who doesn't know what WPF is, it is basically a very efficient and animatable vector interface based on .NET. You can imagine it as a Flash or a Fireworks design for a software except that it is more efficient than Flash and more compromised to .NET applications. The best part I like about WPF is that designers no longer need to learn programming can also use WPF to create interface and port to applications created by programmers. lol enouh rambling.
- RMoore08, on 08/09/2008, -0/+17You can change what you want to happen when you double click on someones name in the settings =)
- SaladCactusKing, on 08/09/2008, -5/+21I've always pronounced GUI as "gooey"
- TaintBrush, on 08/09/2008, -1/+17POP3? Oh god no. IMAP ftw.
- MalDON, on 08/09/2008, -0/+15Skypes text chatting is amazing. At least once you get used to right clicking and hitting start chat rather than double clicking to call.
And the video quality puts aim/msn/yahoo to shame. - luet, on 08/09/2008, -0/+14aim is awful. I can't believe people use that garbage.
- BertEatsDirt, on 08/10/2008, -0/+13I thought everyone did? :-)
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -5/+17AIM could use a new GUI too. I still use 5.x over 6.x
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -4/+16Why should we assume it's anything like Yahoo Messenger?
- ErickStevenson, on 08/10/2008, -0/+12Wow you had me going there until you mentioned AIM... I'm surprised your friends hasn't beaten you to a pulp...
- 4ndr3wk, on 08/09/2008, -0/+11I would hate to be your friend
- artfuldodga, on 08/09/2008, -20/+31Digsby FTW, while Microsofts Messenger Protocol is the most widely used, they still have no clue about functionality :S
- MenthiX, on 08/09/2008, -2/+11Almost every new version does have a new GUI. But it's not about just the new looks, it's about the fact its will use WPF now. They didn't make a change like that in years (at least since version 5 or 6). WPF allows alpha blending and animation features they couldn't use before, so it could be interesting.

- Greg2k, on 08/09/2008, -2/+11Yeah and Apple does a great job when porting their stuff over to Windows. I really can't think of a worsely conceived piece of software than Safari for Windows. And I don't see why I need a 70MB update to iTunes for simple bugfixes.
And what about Microsoft Office:Mac? And Virtual PC...
I think Microsoft is relatively generous to the Mac community, I see nothing disgusting here. - MalDON, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9No ***** way. Dude, you just made my night.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -3/+12I have never met anyone, ever that used AIM.
- Katana314, on 08/09/2008, -2/+11For those of you not programmers: WPF is NOT the same as Vista Aero or just adding transparency or anything. It's mainly an overhaul of GUI programming that focuses on layout of items onscreen.
- yuanzhoulu, on 08/09/2008, -3/+12i hate "new GUIs" that just add bloat and curves and no functional advantage. it's easily possible to have a simple design that looks fabulous.
personally i use pidgin and i think the GUI is fabulous. - cotaskmemalloc, on 08/09/2008, -0/+9Amen. I work with WPF on a daily basis, and it's a huge, huge improvement over Windows Forms and MFC.
- ronocdh, on 08/09/2008, -2/+10Why the hell would anyone use that ad-laden piece of crap?
- waydee, on 08/09/2008, -1/+9Use another client then? You don't have to use Microsofts offering if you don't like it.
- Galaxylander, on 08/09/2008, -6/+14Ugh, let's hope they finally make the ridiculously terrible, borderline useless, ugly and featureless Messenger:Mac better. My God I wish people used AIM in Canada, I can't stand MSN on the Windows or Mac side of things. It's so slow and clunky and the PC version is covered in ads.
- gremos, on 08/09/2008, -3/+11All I need is from them is to make it run on OSX (with Video, Sound, and all other features avaialble on Windows )
- SAOSiN, on 08/09/2008, -0/+8Link FAIL
- tonich03, on 08/09/2008, -5/+13Ok, now make a good one for MAC! And this time put in some webcam.
- kansai22, on 08/09/2008, -1/+9I use Digsby and have for some time but lately I have switched back to using MSN and AIM. Digsby takes up more memory than running both programs at the same time. Digsby also lacks many of the features built into the stand alone programs. Once the Digsby team gets those issues fixed it will be a great program but in the meantime its not really worth using.
- Greg2k, on 08/09/2008, -1/+9You mean like Digg?
- drgmdp, on 08/09/2008, -13/+20"Unless it supports either multi accounts or multi protocols, then what's the use?"
the MSN network is the most used worldwide and the client is pretty good. kinda bloated, but you can get rid of that easily. every other client lacks important features. - sjmulder, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8IMHO Adium (http://adiumx.org, Pidgin based) is the perfect example of a beautiful IM interface done right.
- McShifty, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8Adium
- zephyr42, on 08/09/2008, -1/+7Because they usually have about the same demands on the system wise...
