- vsujohn2, on 11/01/2007, -85/+394How about working on the operating system known as "Windows-*****-Vista", get that piece of ***** working right then call me back in the morning
- cindylauper, on 11/05/2007, -7/+271I hope they start from scratch and build this from the core up entirely. End the bloat!
- ravage86, on 10/24/2007, -17/+147I wonder when Windows Vista will start taking shape
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -11/+117I hope it turns out to be Vienna as in the city and not as in sausage...
- Thorin, on 11/05/2007, -16/+108So will we see this, or Duke Nukem Forever first?
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -27/+118Yeah, because an OS can never ever have multiple versions being worked on in parallel!
- fLUx1337, on 11/01/2007, -14/+101Oh the Windows haters....
I love OSX, but I also love Windows (both XP & Vista), for totally different reasons, and to be honest, I am hoping Windows "7" will be better than Vista.
But I think the main problem is that if they make Windows more like OSX, their will be no more windows, the chances of all apps working without emulation is slim. For the past 10+ years, millions of people have learned and programmed for Windows basically how we know it today, as lets face it, if you have been in a coma for 10 years, and the last OS you used was Win95, you wouldn't feel totally lost in Vista.
That's probably why Vista is a massive let down, they don't wanna let go of their past..... - schizogony, on 11/05/2007, -19/+91I sure hope Vista isn't the next Windows Me.
- mlvassallo, on 11/11/2007, -11/+81I must have a bugged version of Vista. Its working just fine for me.
- Rozenrot, on 10/23/2007, -6/+68I'm in favor of this idea. Stop working on NT, and work on something from scratch!
- TritonX, on 10/29/2007, -2/+57GG will be long replaced when this one comes out.
- vypergts, on 10/29/2007, -5/+54SUSAN: Seven Costanza? You're serious?
GEORGE: Yeah. It's a beautiful name for a boy or a girl...
Susan scoffs.
GEORGE: ...especially a girl. Or a boy. - Hoogs, on 10/26/2007, -7/+51I keep hearing people complain about Vista, but no one ever mentions specifically what's wrong with it. It works fine for me...
- lostngone, on 10/23/2007, -33/+77This can't be right, Apple hasn't demoed Mac OS 10.6. How does Microsoft know what to copy?
- VBShadow, on 11/06/2007, -25/+67Nah. Just like ME was the ***** between 98 and XP, Vista is the ***** between XP and "Vienna"
- yotomote, on 10/23/2007, -4/+43Windows Se7en, will have 7 core characteristics:
-Gluttony
-Greed
-Lust
-Sloth
-Wrath
-Envy
-Pride - mickhyde, on 10/23/2007, -16/+53Here we go again, Linux vs Windows... yyyaaawwnn.
- cliffhanger407, on 10/23/2007, -2/+36FTA:
The OS ran under Virtual PC, and this allowed Traut to show the audience exactly how many resources it was consuming: about 25MB on disk (compare with 14GB for a full Vista install) and 40MB of RAM. The OS booted up in about 20 seconds inside Virtual PC. Still not quite as lightweight as, say, AmigaOS or QNX, but remarkably small for Windows. Traut admitted that he would "still like to see it get smaller."
Yes. Bloated indeed... - KMartSheriff, on 10/23/2007, -1/+31My biggest hope if that they just start from scratch. ***** Legacy hardware. Build a brand new 64-bit only foundation and look only forward.
- mitch37, on 10/24/2007, -1/+30Its funny to compare the comments here and at Ars Technica.
- djgump35, on 11/01/2007, -36/+64I'm holding out for Windows 8......or maybe I'll just switch to Linux finally
- zhulien, on 10/22/2007, -18/+45hahaha "codenamed Windows 7" - what else would Version 7 be called?
- cliffhanger407, on 10/29/2007, -4/+31@Innova69
I hate to call Vista "good", but it's runnable. It may not be as stable as, say, XP. Calling it ME, though, is a outright lie. Do you even remember how horrendous that piece of ***** was? - Angostura, on 10/23/2007, -7/+33That was the plan for Vista, if I recall correctly. No?
- Smegzor, on 10/23/2007, -5/+31It'll be a small, flaccid, and wrinkly with a knot tied in the end.
- dacomputerfreak, on 10/22/2007, -4/+29According to the article, without any GUI and in text mode only 40MB of RAM was being used to run thirteen processes. Isn't that a bit pathetic when compared to booting the same minimalist configuration on Linux? I'm not a Microsoft hater or anything but they seriously have some work to do. BTW I wouldn't personally consider the latest Windows GUI too "glamorous" considering the ratio of limited effects vs. resource usage.
- Solkre, on 11/11/2007, -7/+31You do know how Vista uses memory right?
- toastgodsupreme, on 10/22/2007, -2/+24Dear god... I hope what I inferred from the article is right...
That instead of including a ***** ton of unneeded backwards compatibility in the OS itself, it will simply possess VMs to do that while the OS remains the new hotness without all the bloat and security problems.
Oh please please please let this be true. - antitab, on 10/23/2007, -2/+23Actually, that's the big secret of Vienna. After going overboard with AERO, Microsoft have decided to take things back to basics. Vienna's graphical engine will output in ASCII only.
- Speed, on 11/11/2007, -5/+26Big difference is that Vista is actually a decent OS. The only reason it takes so much flak is that it took 5 years, and Microsoft cut so many features (of course, Vista as we know it has only been worked on for about 2-3 years) and because XP is still really good, so there's no reason to upgrade.
- sublimnl, on 10/22/2007, -4/+24anyone who thinks 98 is the most stable of the lot obviously doesn't use Windows that much. If you were going to give it to a 9x version then it would be 98SE. Anyway, regardless of that, its still XP SP2 FTW. And you forgot 95 = revolutionary.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -30/+49Hope???? It is the next ME. Bloated Piece of trash. I am a windows fan and love my XP but even i have been looking towards Hackintosh and Linux Alternatives.
- StealthTomato, on 10/22/2007, -2/+21While we're nitpicking, it's "grammar."
- ElWhapo, on 10/23/2007, -6/+25@ schizogony
What do you mean you hope it isn't. It already is. The OS is more bloated then a pregnant lady snacking on her third bag of fiesta Doritos.
My biggest problem with Vista is that it is obtrusive. I really don't need my computer second guessing me, I do enough by myself. - Salzar, on 10/23/2007, -2/+21If they charged for a service pack they would be APPLE
- Ramble, on 10/22/2007, -0/+18Aero is faster and more reliable than GDI. Not to mention drawn by the graphics card so there's less processor load.
Next? - crzdmniac, on 10/23/2007, -7/+25Hmmm, is the "7" for the version of Windows, or how many years it will take to complete?
- stinkipete, on 10/22/2007, -2/+20They're not the codenames.
Vista was codnamed "Longhorn." - BenBenMan, on 11/10/2007, -1/+18I like the ASCII art bootscreen in this build.
- crackah, on 10/27/2007, -33/+50Fuuuuuuck stop the vista bashing please? use it, then get back to me.
- ihaveplans, on 10/29/2007, -0/+17What about "soda"?
- LargeTrout, on 10/22/2007, -0/+16Interesting point you make there.
- Gavagai80, on 10/23/2007, -5/+21Sometimes when you've got a gigantic hulking mess it's smarter to go back to basics, as described in the article. Vista's problem is that it's held down by the legacy of decades of people trying to "get this ***** working" with shortsighted hacks.
- Churnd, on 10/22/2007, -1/+17From what I've read, there have already been modified, more secure kernels developed at Microsoft. It's the higher ups who are in charge of making the OS a success that are the ones keeping it from being released, because they KNOW what kind of affect it will have on them. Windows would work fine, and it will be much more secure, but it'll break every other 3rd party app in existence. They would all have to be re-written from the ground up. It would flop because people wouldn't understand why nothing works. And you thought Vista was bad...
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14INTERNET EXPLORER KILLED MY DAD! I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE MICROSOFT!
- estvir, on 10/23/2007, -14/+28What are these bugs you speak of?
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/22/2007, -2/+16Dugg down. Everyone knows that you can only love one operating system on Digg. /sarcasm
- stargatesteve, on 10/23/2007, -0/+14Actually, the working name "Vienna" was announced a while ago...
- estvir, on 11/11/2007, -3/+17What dream world? The only thing I have said is asking what the bugs are, I haven't declared whether there ARE or AREN'T any yet.
Your straw man is burning, so what are these bugs you speak of? There are 'tons' so it should be easy to list. -
