Windows 7 Beta (x64) : http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/63311 ...
Open beta. will work until august. - ConfusedCartman, on 01/10/2009, -7/+142To download, here's direct links:
32 bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/63311 ...
64 bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/63311 ...
Activation:
Log on here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/
Now, in the same window or tab, COPY AND PASTE one of these links and hit enter:
32 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ...
64 bit: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ...
If it redirects you to an error page, hard refresh (ctrl-F5) until you get to the page with an activation key. If it doesn't work, you did something wrong.
Also, a 32 bit will work with a 64 bit version and vice versa, so aim to grab a 64 bit key as they seem to be easier. I just activated my copy of Windows 7 with a 64 bit key; I'm using it right now. It is fantastic, by the way. - drlha, on 01/10/2009, -7/+93"Speeded Up" is perfectly fine English. Clearly you need something more than a "high school degree" to know that, however.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/speeded - clinko, on 01/10/2009, -23/+101Downloading from msft now at > 1MB/sec , no issues at all.
Not everyone has a torrent app on their pc, so msft wrote their own download manager that does multiple connections like a torrent. That's what you use when you click download at their site.
This article just seems like self-promoting spam from torrentfreak.com. Just because an article is anti-microsoft and mentions torrents doesn't make it worth reading/promoting. - LedZepAddict, on 01/10/2009, -7/+66I even tried to wai for the Public Beta, and yesterday as soon as i got home the servers were down so I went over to TPB and downloaded it overnight, I'm currently backing up my computer, partitioning my Hard drive, and am ready for Windows 7.
- wontstoptalking, on 01/10/2009, -9/+68When will companies learn to endorse Bittorrent, and use it to their advantage? Sure, it can be used for illegal purposes, but so can guns. And cops use guns!
- inkswamp, on 01/10/2009, -5/+56Grammar Nazi fail.
- prattmic, on 01/10/2009, -0/+45To get a key login to your Windows Live ID on http://technet.microsoft.com/. Then go to on of the following URLs and refresh. (It took me upwards of 1000 reloads last night)
32-Bit key: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ...
64-bit key: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ... - WiZZLa, on 01/10/2009, -5/+43They haven't torrented their high school degrees yet.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -0/+37To be honest most people wanted the keys. They already had ISOs from torrents.
- FreddieD, on 01/10/2009, -3/+37I sure would like to know why you people are burying him.. Thanks for the links!
- ConfusedCartman, on 01/10/2009, -7/+36Obviously more resource hungry than XP, but performs faster than Vista. UI is much more intuitive and clean, and everything seems easier than in vista.
Basically, if you've got modern hardware and would like an OS that is reliable and pretty, 7 is awesome. - nonymous666, on 01/10/2009, -5/+29This was a "problem" for users, not for Microsoft. They're handing it out for free; no reason for them to add more servers for *free* software, just because people are all "I need it now! now! now!".
- WoollyMittens, on 01/10/2009, -0/+22Microsoft would not be this big if they didn't tolerate piracy the way they do. They keep the world addicted this way. A pirated copy is MUCH better for them than someone finding an open source alternative or going to apple.
- Danltn, on 01/10/2009, -0/+21MB != Mb
- ScottMitchell, on 01/10/2009, -11/+31See http://xkcd.com/528/
- WoollyMittens, on 01/10/2009, -0/+19So you like the new Windows, except for all the new features?
- Jamieee, on 01/10/2009, -2/+20Owned.
- ZeWho, on 01/10/2009, -4/+22Do you seriously think that it is a repackaged version of Vista? Winnie the pooh?
- awolfe91, on 01/10/2009, -5/+23Let's get the party started!
- cinder, on 01/10/2009, -5/+22Meh. I'm downloading from Microsoft at my maximum download speed, and I only had to wait an extra day. Big deal.
- phenom2k7, on 01/11/2009, -1/+18ConfusedCartman - Yes, Windows XP might run on those specs but it's horrendously slow. I remember loading XP onto my P2 @ 450 MHz with 128mb ram and a TNT 2 graphics. Windows XP had similar teething problems to Vista. Nostalgia is a *****.
- ConfusedCartman, on 01/10/2009, -5/+21XP System Requirements:
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Let me know when you get Windows 7 running on a PC with those specifications. - loudnobnoxious, on 01/10/2009, -7/+23First impressions on comparison to Vista/XP?
- EtherGnat, on 01/10/2009, -5/+21"USAGE The past tense of speed up is speeded up (not sped up), for example I speeded up to overtake the lorry. The past participle is also speeded up, for example I had already speeded up when I spotted the police car."

- lostarchitect, on 01/10/2009, -0/+16Thanks man, I got a key using your method. I am torrenting the ISO however, because the direct link always cuts off at 356 MB. No idea why.
- ConfusedCartman, on 01/10/2009, -0/+15Works fine, NerveBand. Looks like it's something on your end.
- eth3l, on 01/10/2009, -3/+18This is the only place where crushing demand for MS products are a failure and crushing demand for iPhone/iPod is a testament to its demand.
I got 3 keys, the 64x version and the 32x version yesterday = complete success for me. - smackjack, on 01/10/2009, -0/+15Do the people at Torrentfreak have any idea what they are talking about? It wasn't the download servers that crashed. It was the servers handing out the keys that went down. Bittorent would not help in this case.
- esquire360, on 01/10/2009, -4/+19Microsoft should have used bit torrent, but I see them not wanting to give seal of approval to the technology that "Pirates" use... oh 1.7mb's off their servers very nice....
- perral1, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14Yeah, @ConfusedCartmen, those numbers are approximately the same thing. In fact, 1.5 MB/s is significantly higher than 10,000Kbps. It's actually 12,288 Kbps. The units are different - 1024 Kbps = 1 Mbps = 1/8 MB/s. So 1.5 MB/s = 12 Mbps = 12288 Kbps.
Which is because 8 bits, the lower case 'b', equals 1 byte, the uppercase 'B'. - Pelapp, on 01/10/2009, -2/+15Woaaa.. Psycho rage much ?
- ArthurSucks, on 01/10/2009, -0/+13Don't be surprised if Microsoft decides to make their own P2P software for distribution. They'd rather do that than use an Open Source application.
- rm249, on 01/10/2009, -1/+14As one of the commenters on torrentfreak stated, the issue wasn't with the actual download server, but the servers that gave out the keys. I do however agree that bittorrent would be a more logical way of sending out the beta.
- cribbs542, on 01/10/2009, -0/+12Works for me, just going a bit slow
- mysticmatrix, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13Yeah! Got my keys!!
Finally my 5 year old Hotmail account came to some use. - lulzitsadigg, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13YOU CAN COPY & PASTE PICTURES? NO WAY.
- carlonchox911, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13It's the users bandwidth that they paid for.
- EtherGnat, on 01/10/2009, -3/+13Please tell me you did not just equate Windows 98 with Windows ME.
- scy1192, on 01/10/2009, -6/+16Really? I downloaded from Microsoft's servers at 1.1 megabytes/s (my connection's top speed). By comparison, Mininova's torrent of the same file (7 Ultimate x64) with nearly 2000 seeders got me downloading at less than half the speed (ports properly forwarded!), PLUS Bittorrent has the side-effect of increasing your latency 10-fold and slowing your browsing down.
Don't get me wrong, Bittorrent is nice for very large downloads (3gb+) because you can always pause and resume, but you're kidding yourself if you think that Bittorrent is any faster than a high-end HTTP or FTP server like Microsoft has.
Also, the "high traffic" wasn't caused by the large downloads, but the high amount of keys requested that effectively DDoS'd their HTTP servers (not their download servers)
In other news, the bouncing comment box is really hard on my eyes. - Azathothh, on 01/10/2009, -0/+10Anyone tried playing games like Crysis, Bioshock or Fallout 3? Are they faster than Vista?
- EtherGnat, on 01/10/2009, -0/+10This is a radical idea, but they could use more than one method for distribution. Nobody said it was an either/or proposition. They can provide a torrent for those who can make use of it which gives those users a better experience, and that removes a lot of traffic from the standard servers so it provides a better experience for the Luddites as well. It's a win-win-win situation.
- jjesusfreak01, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11I may get dugg down for supporting microsoft, but if you get all of the info, you will find that bittorrent would not have helped MS at all. They have Akamai contracted for download bandwidth, but the servers that failed were the key servers, which are hosted by Microsoft. When the Vista Beta came out, I downloaded it in about 10 minutes from my school connection, no problems, and on my home connection over my wireless network, I was getting about 1MB/s last night.
To recap: the download servers never crashed and had plenty of bandwidth. Bittorrent would not necessarily have been that much better unless MS seeded with the same amount of bandwidth. - LedZepAddict, on 01/10/2009, -0/+10Well, while I can't tell if that is a sarcastic remark, I didn't burry you because I don't know it's a legit question; It is in a way a repackage of Vista, but that's exactly what new OS's are. They are updates of the previous versions.
The thing to keep in mind is that this is a Beta. It does not have all the features of the full release. I'm sure Microsoft has a few surpirses left. And i anticipate them.
Test it out for yourself if you want to. - _skin_, on 01/11/2009, -1/+11Who is the "sped" now? BIATCHHHH!
- LedZepAddict, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11I agree with ConfusedCartman [Great Name BTW] it's smooth and pretty, and the load time is much better than Vista. Read my comment under BassMastr [2nd cmnt top to bottem] for expanded analysis.
- banik2008, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11Greed? Theyr'e giving away the beta for free. Where's the greed in that?
- DustinHill, on 01/11/2009, -0/+9@DigPiglet
BitTorrent is already legitimate. This tech is used for many legal reasons. Plus, only an idiot would think that MS isn't already on top of the piracy issue. WollyMittens nailed the point. I have a copy of Ultimate that wasn't purchased, and all I had to do was get a key and call MS's activation hot line and now my version is considered genuine. MS obviously knows that people can do this as it's not difficult. There are several other ways to get around paying for it that could be easily solved if the cared to do it, yet they dont because they know people like me would just use a Linux distro and be done with it. - ijwhelan, on 01/10/2009, -3/+12I just installed, and their product key servers are back up. http://lifehacker.com/5128018/windows-7-beta-produ ... if you want an authorized version.
