- sjbdallas, on 03/03/2009, -5/+55Maybe they should rename it Google.
- atomicpoet, on 03/03/2009, -0/+36Can they just settle on a brand already?
- kibbledbits, on 03/03/2009, -1/+32Maybe they should name it MSN? Doh!
- castletech, on 03/03/2009, -2/+32I didn't know people actualy used it. What is the point?
- prettyawesome, on 03/03/2009, -3/+29There's a Microsoft Live Search?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/03/2009, -1/+27Mojave
- przemeklach, on 03/03/2009, -0/+23What's wrong with live? It fits with all their other web stuff like office live etc. Changing the name will not make it better or worse search engine. I think it will just confuse those people who use it. So yes it will matter because it will confuse people and at the same time it doesn't matter cause the search engine underneath is still the same.
- ericdano, on 03/03/2009, -3/+24Maybe they can call it cuil.com?
- TenaciousG86, on 03/03/2009, -4/+25You can call ***** anything you want, but it is still *****
- Craga89, on 03/03/2009, -0/+17Hmm that sounds vaguely familiar...
- beatitlikeacop, on 03/03/2009, -3/+19I have only used Live Search one time, and that was for the eBay cashback program.
- Nicoon, on 03/03/2009, -3/+18No, it won't matter.
- blix01, on 03/03/2009, -9/+21Mohave search?
- rakeshishere, on 03/03/2009, -1/+12Whenever Microsoft Rebrands something, they make a long name something like "Windows Live .... " and it sucks even more
- ahpro, on 03/03/2009, -2/+13Maybe they'll go back to calling it MSN Messenger? I don't know anybody who doesn't call it 'MSN' and the rebranding was part of the reason why a lot of average computer users stopped using it as much.
- jeremyduffy, on 03/03/2009, -5/+16Miscrosoft had a search engine!? Who knew?
- timf, on 03/03/2009, -0/+10You have a gold box.
That's pretty good actually - inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9Re branding or renaming the product will not make any difference. Its the product that builds the brand, not the other way around. They should concentrate on getting live search returning relevant & better results . Its a shame that Microsoft with all its brains can't get Live Search better. Only Yahoo has got close to Google in terms of returning relevant results.
- haid, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8Reminds me of the Mad magazine spoof from when Esso changed its name to Exxon in the 70s.
"Nixxon - We changed our name, but we are the same old gas." - BullBearMS, on 03/03/2009, -2/+10Unfortunately, Microsoft has moved from a culture where talented coders who could also recognize and lead other talented coders were calling the shots to a culture ruled by it's sales and marketing departments. Microsoft seems to be unaware that without good code a software company has nothing worth buying. No amount of marketing will fix that.
- RealmDown, on 03/03/2009, -1/+8Moogle.
They could even team up with Chick Fil A and abuse more cows for commercials. - Bloodwine, on 03/03/2009, -1/+7or GoogleMax or GoogleXTreme, Google 2.0 ... or Google9000. They have to convey that they are better than Google.
(I know they legally can't do that) - waydee, on 03/03/2009, -2/+8Internet Explorer 7 suggests it as default.
- newwatch51, on 03/03/2009, -1/+7The only reason why people use is because it's the IE default
- ofenza, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6It's still Esso here in Portugal.
- parasight, on 03/03/2009, -1/+6About that deleted tweet... the Twitter search never forgets, deleted or not:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=played+today+wi ... - mysticpickle, on 03/03/2009, -1/+6Buried because...seriously...who uses microsoft live search?
- FLarsen, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5Probably a US only change, it's Esso here in Norway as well.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4g00gle.
- Shadoblak, on 03/03/2009, -2/+6They should rename everything that startes with "Windows" or "Windows Live"...But no. It won't matter.
- Hermmunster, on 03/03/2009, -2/+6According to the article Microsoft's Life Search was grabbing 9.4 percent of all searches last April (2008). They were offering a cashback program which I believe was the idea where they were paying customers to use their search technology, albeit in tiny amounts. They also had a program where up to a certain amount of cash would be donated to a charity for each unique user performing a unique search a single time. The article further states that that market share drop to 8.5 percent after those programs ended.
If you have done any computer repair and updates (over the long term) you certainly have come across the need to reinstall the OS, to look at a lot of new computers that need to be cleaned up of all the junk and you have had the opportunity to look at the default setting made by many companies in contract with Microsoft.
For instance, when you look at the default search it is Live Search. If you are familiar with consumer knowledge as you would if you were fixing computers, upgrading computers, cleaning computers, etc., you'd note that most consumers do not know what that is for nor how to change it. You'd also note that most consumers when given the choice to change it don't understand the option they are being presented. You'd also know that with the saturation and pure influence Microsoft has on all the markets you'd understand that many consumers don't want to change.
On the good side, there are guys that do educate people when they bring their computers into the shop and they clearly identify Microsoft's influences and which technologies that need to be adjusted away from Microsoft's defaults.
My point is, that the 9.4 percent market share is only there due to the sheer number of people that don't know how to change it or why they should.
In the recent months I've seen a large increase in the attempt by other companies such as Yahoo, Ask, and a slew of disreputable vendors attempting to hijack away from the defaults to put their search engine in place. When I say disreputable I mean companies such as mywebsearch, etc.
One thing is clear, advertising on the net is extremely important to these companies and a lot of money is being made. Microsoft is just a copycat and can't create simple technologies easily implemented with a solid fair system of management.
I guess the conclusion is that there is no need for a Microsoft search technology or engine.
Since most consumers do move away, eventually, from Live Search, it would be nice if they too understood that moving away from the OS in the same way would actually be a beneficial thing for them. Their costs would go down, their utility would go up, they wouldn't have to worry about malware, they'd have opportunity to appreciate their privacy (no more WGA/WGN spying on them, no more activation, no more EULAs that grant Microsoft the right to pry into what they are doing, no ore 47+ programs collecting and reporting information about you back to Microsoft, no more DRM). At least many consumers are getting it right when they use something other than Microsoft's Live Search. - TheMachine1, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5Lipstick on a pig.
- Hermmunster, on 03/03/2009, -2/+6IE7 and IE8 don't suggest anything, they make it the default.
- MtheoryX, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4You found a reasonably well contained place to dispose of aforementioned turd. Not bad.
- SJZero, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4This is a recurring theme in marketing. It's a stupid theme.
The Republicans have a horrible track record of spending and debt increasing at multiples of democratic rates. They've started two unpopular wars, one of which was through blatant lies. Their platform includes gems like "We hate Mexicans" and "We hate gays". Ask them why they lost so hard, and they think it's because their name sounds funny. Show of hands who thinks the problem is the product, and who thinks the problem is the name?
Windows Vista was sold on machines that clearly couldn't run it acceptably because of an error on marketing's part. It was too slow on all but the most powerful machines. It had annoying features like the broken UAC implementation. It was expensive, and installing it on the same hardware too many times would cause it to die and not come back. Show of hands who thinks the problem is the product, and who thinks the problem is the name?
Google is a stupid name at worst, and an incredibly stupid nerd in-joke at best. The site, however, is lightning fast, almost always provides some of the most relevant search results on the internet, the design focuses on the results instead of the ancilliary crap, and despite being non-standard everywhere, it has become THE search engine on the Internet. Show of hands who thinks the reason is the product, and who thinks the reason is the name?
Re-branding only works when you've changed or hid the problems. Windows live search, when rebranded, will still be a third tier search engine that's horrible at giving relevant search results, is very poorly designed, and generally just makes people wonder why they aren't on Google yet. It doesn't matter how many times they change the name, because the product itself is horrible. Likewise, it doesn't matter how many times they rename MSN Messenger, it remains one of the best IM products out there, so it's synonymous with quality no matter what the name. Microsoft needs to fire their marketing department and get a clue. - Testies, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5Ummm...the latter?
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4Common Microsoft, give up on that ***** already and make better programs.
- FredFredrickson, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4To say that Microsoft is the exclusive "copy-cat" of the industry is just stupid. Almost every tech company out there (yes, Apple and anyone putting out Linux included) is copying other people to a certain extent. You can't not do it. Trying to develop things in your own little vacuum is not only impossible - it is suicidal for a company, especially for a company that needs to be constantly releasing new stuff.
- Danltn, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3***** off.
- BevansDesign, on 03/03/2009, -2/+5Whatever they settle on, it's gotta be better than "Live Search".
- Hermmunster, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3You don't know how to read, thus you don't know when a valid point is made. I'd say get some experience under your belt, real life experience, then go out and reeducate yourself in computing.
I clearly said Live Search is unnecessary as it is just a copycat and adds nothing to the mix. I also said that it was beneficial to others to recognize this and to move on away from Microsoft due to undue influences and tactics which are being picked up by other vendors, even the malware authors. Where do you think they get their catalyst from to begin with? Or do you think I'm talking about ATI? - rakeshishere, on 03/03/2009, -2/+5I call it ***** .... ohh wait
- strictnein, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3You're confusing search results with the plan that Yahoo would show Google Adwords ads, in addition to Yahoo Search Marketing ads. The plan fizzled.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+5Microsoft Brain Dead search, anyone?
- BuzzFriendly, on 03/03/2009, -2/+5If you put a turd in a gold box you still have a .........
- chriskeyes, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3I use it...
- sethpr, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3It was still Esso here in Puerto Rico too... except that last year they left and sold all the Esso Gas Stations to Total :S.
- newwatch51, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Yeah, when I visited Canada I noticed that it was Esso.
- newwatch51, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4No. I've tried doing searches in both Google and Live Search. The Google results were MUCH more useful.
- musntSurfatWork, on 03/03/2009, -1/+3actually, MS should get with the times and call it ***** , it may actually work for them!
