- AustinMeoang, on 06/17/2008, -23/+488Everyone's going to digg down these comments for the sole fact that they masturbate to Steve Jobs.
- lnxfi, on 06/17/2008, -26/+437I know there will be a ton of bashing going on here, but I have to thank him for accelerating the advancement of home computers.
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 06/17/2008, -32/+440Windows 95 was revolutionary dude...
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -8/+332Hmmm in comparison:
A guy that went from junior year at Harvard working with computers... and basically took down IBM.
compared to
1st year, 1st semester drop out at Oregon college who was studying literature and art... and used a guy name WOZ to stand upon and take credit for everything.
Who was the one that actually made a difference in the computer market and knows the guts of programming like Gates instead of pretending to know? There really isnt any other like him. Try and compare, but you can't. - chris9902, on 06/17/2008, -37/+283Anyone who has anything bad to say just keep it to yourself. You're only going to look stupid.
- sandiegodude, on 06/17/2008, -6/+242"With the addition of over $30 billion from Buffett, the Gates Foundation doubles in size to become the largest transparently operated charitable organization in the world."
That right there is what makes me appreciate him. The man may have been a snake in business, but his Inoculate the World program has been amazingly wonderful for children in 3rd world countries around the world. - NanoStuff, on 06/17/2008, -7/+237Whatever you think of Bill Gates, after he is gone, there's only Ballmer left. Let that sink in for a moment.
- tdishman, on 06/17/2008, -17/+233Whether you love him or hate him, I know that I, for one, would be living a totally different life if it weren't for him.
- gbarger, on 06/17/2008, -8/+218Am I one of the only people that respects him? He's not dumb or lazy. It's not easy to build a company from the ground up. It takes long weeks and hard work. He's a great business man, and a computer geek whether people realize it or not.

Gates, a difficult sixth grader, asks his mother, "Have you ever tried thinking?" - inactive, on 06/17/2008, -20/+155The comments will suck :(
- emiller, on 06/17/2008, -2/+117Fall 1967
Gates' parents enroll him in Lakeside School, an exclusive boys school in Seattle. He is the smallest kid in the class, yet has size 13 feet.
...I'm not gonna even go there. - franklymister, on 06/17/2008, -3/+118Bill Gates is a giant on this earth, no matter where your OS loyalties may lie.
Without him, and the two Steves, and Gary Kildall, and Bob Metcalfe, and others in their circle, we wouldn't have personal computing as we know it. It would have come years later from IBM, slowly, expensively, and clumsily.
Bill started Microsoft because he loved to write software. No matter what you think of MS now, you have to respect the awesome nature of what he achieved.
As an Apple user since 1979, I say thank you Bill Gates, and God bless. - seventhc, on 06/17/2008, -1/+101Don't forget about Paul Allen. He never gets the credit he deserves and in fact had to write some of the code while on the plane which would have failed miserably if he didn't get it right.
That being said, love or hate Bill Gates, but he donates more money than any human alive and is leaving ms to concentrate on that, and that alone speaks volumes about the man.
side note, I am no ms fanboy and haven't used windows in years. Switched to Linux years ago and haven't looked back since. - zcreem, on 06/17/2008, -6/+102Let's face it we are all just jealous of the guy.
I just hope he keeps giving away his money to those who need it. - lilbitmoreslyk, on 06/17/2008, -23/+112Awesome -10 on diggs on my first comment for saying how revolutionary windows 95 was...
- MaynardJK, on 06/17/2008, -4/+81Wouldn't they be digging them up? Most of the comments so far are negative toward Gates.
/Agree that Digg is filled with waaay to many mac fanbois though. - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -10/+85When you mentioned Steve Jobs, I came in my pants a little bit.
- gzusfreak, on 06/17/2008, -4/+65I think there are plenty of people on Digg that were to young to even know what Windows or Microsoft was at that time.
Hence most of the bashing. - ColorBlind, on 06/17/2008, -3/+63ewww.....but true.
- rootsm3, on 06/17/2008, -13/+69I'm gonna miss his sexy ass.
- digginamish, on 06/17/2008, -5/+59You're right Inxfi.
Everyone likes to hate the success of others and this thread is turning into the usual hate-fest that people seem to love to heap on Bill Gates (they also seem unwilling to admit that his charity is so massively successful).
No matter what the haters have to say, Windows was revolutionary in that it turned the business world away from the green on black standard.
Windows, Macintosh, Xerox? Whatever; you don’t have to invent the world to make it a better place.
Microsoft’s turn at the top may be ending, but no matter what they all have to say, the guy was a successful business man and I, for one, have built a career that thrived because of his success. - redfred18t, on 06/17/2008, -6/+59Plain and simple, Bill Gates is the man
I mean, just look at how goofy he is in his mugshot. Also, arrested while speeding in a 911? Just badass. - elhaf, on 06/17/2008, -2/+53I will:
You know what they say about people with big feet: big shoes. - rip747, on 06/17/2008, -9/+59dude, you're an idiot.
though i was an os/2 fanboy back in the day, even i have to admit how easy windows 95 made using a computer to the average person. let's face facts, back when windows 95 came out, it was easy to get a printer, scanner, or just about anything to work with it. doing the same under linux or os/2 required a lot of work.
you also have to credit windows 95 for bringing gaming to the pc. - chadell, on 06/17/2008, -4/+51The geek changed the world!
- specialK16, on 06/17/2008, -4/+47Let me laugh...
- shakbhaji, on 06/17/2008, -2/+44Buried for blind fanboyism. Coming from a mac user.
- aautopsy, on 06/17/2008, -1/+43I don't know about you but i was thinking developers developers DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERSSSS *sweat forms and face turns red* DEVELOPEEERRRRRRRSSSSSSSS
- Aroundtheworls, on 06/17/2008, -6/+48I think there's a lot to admire about good old Bill. He managed to lead a company from what was a couple of fast-talking young geeks through to being a true multinational products and services blue-chip company. Not many others in history have grown a company so large in such a short time with so relatively few resources.
And in the end he's not some sort of tyrannical megalomaniac stomping around the hallways of his company scaring people, he's just Bill. He quietly stepped aside and is now doing the right thing by donating his billions to needy people all over the world. - lilbitmoreslyk, on 06/17/2008, -4/+46"People just want cheap and 'good enough"', why not that makes perfect sense to me, why should I pay for any more than I need?
- ColorBlind, on 06/17/2008, -17/+57I look stupid for posting on digg in the first place. I've come to accept it.
- mkling176, on 06/17/2008, -1/+37"Probably came out in the 90s"? What tipped you off to that?
- franklymister, on 06/17/2008, -4/+39Some of us are fans of Steve Jobs AND Bill Gates.
And Woz, and Gary Kildall, and all the pioneers that built the modern age of computing. - weemundo, on 06/17/2008, -4/+35Bill Gates is my inspiration :)
- BoneheadFarker, on 06/17/2008, -2/+31...which was a rip-off of the Xerox Alto...
- sfacets, on 06/17/2008, -3/+32People here (talking mainly to the first commenters) need to learn their PC histories...
- ha1f, on 06/17/2008, -3/+31You forgot about those masturbating to Linus Torvalds or his kernel
- elhaf, on 06/17/2008, -2/+29They forgot to mention his one and only academic paper in 1978 with his advisor from Harvard, Christos Papadimitriou. Not a big deal in the business world, but it is somewhat of a big deal in the academic world to publish an academic paper as an undergrad:
http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~christos/papers/Bounds ...
By the time it was actually published, Gates was already at MicroSoft in Albequerque, and Papadimitriou was already at Berkley. - Tiphys, on 06/17/2008, -5/+30But...the ship (assuming you mean Microsoft) isn't going down.
- netneutrality, on 06/17/2008, -1/+26He's already got iMacs. He likes them. What's wrong with that?
- Seaton, on 06/17/2008, -1/+25Steve Jobs masturbates to pictures....
of Steve Jobs. - falconer, on 06/17/2008, -1/+24Windows 95 set the standard for how people interact with computers. It changed everything, and stuff has been more-or-less the same ever since. Desktop, start menu, taskbar, Windows Explorer, etc.
- ligyron, on 06/17/2008, -0/+22And now +153. I hope you're feeling better
- paulisnotdead, on 06/17/2008, -1/+23Microsoft never bought Digg and even if they did they wouldn't give a ***** about the comments. Stop being a tool.
- jcblitz, on 06/17/2008, -3/+24Probably because of the...
- krische, on 06/17/2008, -6/+26Pirates of Silicon Valley taught me everything I need to know about him.
- frazw, on 06/17/2008, -1/+20Windows 95 was not the first version of windows.
The first version was released in 1985. Prior to Windows 95 it was not strictly part of the OS but an add on to MS-DOS, an application really.
Even with 95, DOS v7 was still under the hood but Windows was a more integral part.
The major difference to previous versions was the start menu and taskbar UI. Prior to that applications were icons in windows within the program manager. This change would be the bit that I would call revolutionary however I don't believe it can be attributed to Microsoft.
The other big thing about Windows 95 was the beginnings of DirectX. Again you might not call a 3D graphics API Microsofts innovation (I think SGI did this first) but DirectX is a combined API for graphics and sound.
Both of these innovations whilst not originated by Microsoft, were indeed revolutionary as far as user experience goes and both first appeared in the windows universe on 95. So not revolutionary with respect to other OS's but to previous versions of Windows. - OftEccentricity, on 06/17/2008, -1/+20Agreed.
- mrloserhead, on 06/17/2008, -6/+25QDOS!
