- Seanmu13, on 04/30/2008, -4/+86Pretty sad if you are a so called 'techie' and cannot setup vista.
- bumcheekcity, on 04/30/2008, -5/+59"My 18-year-old son and I could barely set up a new Vista machine for my 80-something father."
Then you're a ***** moron. Pencil and paper for you. - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -1/+37Just because you CALL yourselves techies does not mean you ar. If you can't get Vista working, then you are not knowledgeable on technology.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+32Very crappy blog spam and wtf 44 diggs? This failed so hard it wasn't even funny. If you're a techie and don't know how to get a vista set up going.....you should jump off a bridge.
- Night201, on 04/30/2008, -0/+22Real techies don't buy computers at Best Buy or Circuit City.
- gcnaddict, on 04/30/2008, -2/+22pretty sad for the techie. Vista installs via a 2-step process and it works right off the bat. It's been this way since the early alphas.
- crackah, on 04/30/2008, -1/+20Strange, my 80 something granpa is using it, he got a pc last year. Even installed a web cam without my help. Im sure its not that hard. Stupid post really.
- plainandsimple, on 04/30/2008, -5/+22My grandfather didn't have any real problems with Vista. Though he mainly uses his computer to go on the internet, and type up his life stories in Word '07. So there's been really no problems for him, that he's told me.
- ozid, on 04/30/2008, -1/+18srsly. i mean i've run into some issues on some computers, but its usually a hardware problem. an easy fix. the setup itself is the simplest windows install ever, i think.
- virtorio, on 04/30/2008, -0/+14I think these two "techies" need to take a free computer 101 course at their local college.
- zigunerweisen, on 04/30/2008, -1/+13If two techies struggle to get Vista working, then I question the qualifications of these 2 techies.
- Hastin, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11And people didn't have this problem when XP came out (even after SP1)? I remember that Charter wouldn't support me because "XP Professional" was a business operating system, and they didn't design their internet activator software for businesses.
Almost every thing listed was the fault of someone besides Microsoft or Vista. HP didn't have drivers, the DSL disc wasn't supported, AOL didn't have their software up to snuff, etc. I fail to see how MS was a fault for any of this. - CAPITALLETTERS, on 04/30/2008, -1/+11If 2 techies can't install windows, the definition of techies has changed. A lot.
- theragu40, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10I was going to say...I'm reading this and thinking "really?" Red flags came up when he went to Best Buy and Circuit City to buy the machine and then started blaming the bloatware on Vista (the manufacturer does that), but I really knew something was amiss when he thought he needed to "install" his DSL on his computer. What a foolish article. This guy is not a "techie".
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9There are some retarded complaints in here. Most of which centered on "Waa waa I want to use my ancient 2 operating system old printer with a new computer, why can't I?"
- millertime588, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10Yes, the guy can't even burn a cd right.
- basevillin, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9And here I though this was an article about a geriatric person failing to use vista. It's about a middle aged man and his son struggling to import ancient proprietary stuff into Vista. (Windows 98 burned a CD 'unreadable by Vista'? wtflol?)
- PhonicUK, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9A techie is not a techie if he uses AOL with a USB modem...
- mightycbu, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9a self-proclaimed tech-savvy guy did not know you have to install a driver for a usb-modem?
- Kyzen, on 04/30/2008, -2/+11Are you kidding me? I put my parents and remaining grandparents on Vista just because it was so much more user friendly than XP for people who are very technologically inept.
I'm not a Vista fanboy or anything, I run Linux on two machines at home (though yes, I dislike Macs), but all of these brainless Microsoft bashing articles are starting to get really annoying. - GoKings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8This is so funny because when I went to set up my grandma's new comp with Vista a while ago I set out an hour and a half or two to get it running. It took me about 30 minutes... You just click a few buttons, name your computer, let it install, remove the bloat-ware, plug in the internet (or set up the wireless), download Firefox, Avast, and AVG Anti-Spyware (lord knows old people need it... Oh a free computer! Click.) and you're done. I don't see what's so difficult. I found it even more straight forward than XP.
Oh, and rofl at techies... These guys are obviously not "techies" - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -0/+7It's simple. If you fail at computers, downgrade to mac. It's allright.
- MScrip, on 04/30/2008, -0/+7Sound like pointless whining. Is it Vista's fault that you need a driver for a DSL modem because you don't have an ethernet cable? Or that you don't know how to burn a data CD? Or that the old computer's IE can't access Gmail? And I'm glad you "won't go into all the details of the struggles over the next day of getting AOL contacts from the old machine into the new one..." I'd have to kill myself if I had to read that.
- phantom_mullet, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6This guy calls himself a "techie"? Seriously?
Using Gmail to transfer all your files to a new PC? Blaming software problems on the operating system?
Get real. Buried for wasting my time and whining like a girl. - cheungroys, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Really... you can't install it? are you that ***** retarded? My cousin (9) and I (15) both know how to install Vista. Vista can be installed it in less then 30 mins, install all the programs needed, and the drivers don't even need to be manually installed, if you get Real Built for Vista components and accessories, it installs everything by itself. Even my grandfather also knows how to install it and he's not even good with computers (he installs ad software). You, my friend, is a Moron. Not a techie
- Mononuclear, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Also what kind of techie burns a cd, then claims that vista can't read cd's burned by windows 98? then emails the files to himself with yahoo? What kind of techie doesn't have at least a 1GB thumbdrive? This "techie" may know how to turn on a computer and write emails, maybe even how to reinstall windows from a cd.. that doesn't make him a techie
- phantom_mullet, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Oh, and the title of his blog post is inaccurate. It should read "Attempting to Use Dinosaur Windows 98 Hardware on a Brand New PC and Being Totally Incompetent at Backing Up Files and Installing Software Clearly Makes Vista the Problem of this Whole Situation Because I Am A Tool"
*Fixed. - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+8So...you've never tried EITHER, but you are already making a guess on which is more user friendly?
- Dumbledorito, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6There are a lot of oddball problems he lists that don't quite pass the sniff test. For one, they connect to the net via USB? And not with an ethernet cable? Surely the new computer had that available, and it wouldn't require drivers at all.
Secondly, a Win98 CD burned a CD that Vista couldn't read? How is that even possible? I make no claims to be a hardware and software genius, but this seems more likely that it was a corrupted burning or an oddball brand of drive that was to blame (assuming this story is even remotely true).
Overall, this just sounds like the usual FUD. - I1969, on 04/30/2008, -21/+27This is exactly why I switched my parents to a Mac three years ago, and my sisters even earlier. I don't want to be the family MS support guru.
- jfujita, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Seriously. He didnt realize the usb device needed a driver? Complete noob.
- Sogui, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Judging by "Grandpa's" tech situation, something tells me the scanner/printer were ancient and would be lucky to run on XP, let alone Vista. Also Grandpa was probably holding his DSL CD from 1998.
- marksmayo, on 04/30/2008, -3/+9Adblock Plus. What ad? :)
- Darkx1337, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6I think it is. I guess its a matter of opinion.
- iofthestorm, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5These are not well known problems microsoft has promised to fix, they are only the stupidity of the so called "techie".
- pjbrown88, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6First off, the title of the article is misleading. The story isn't about a grandpa being unable to use Vista, it's about the incompetence of his son and grandson.
And second...Best Buy...really? - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -10/+15You mean you CAN'T be the MS support guy becuase you don't know how to use it.
- MScrip, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5Bottom line... it's not Vista's fault.
- SBelyea, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6Seriously, you are an asshat. Don't use digg to promote your own articles, and if you're going to whine about Vista, at least get a clue and not complain about the problems you encountered moving from AOL 5.0 to the present.
- TexasShiv, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5If all their documents could be put on a disk, and you're a so called "techie", then why not just throw it on a USB jump drive?
If you really loved your parents, you would not let them have DSL and AOL - skiboy352001, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5obviously nothing here except blogspam. If your only way to figure out how to read a CD is by resetting up the old computer, you have a very limited bag of tricks and don't qualify for "techie" status.
- dark1587, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I have to wonder... why are you using a USB connection for a modern PC? Also, you're directly connecting a system to the internet without it being behind a hardware firewall? And No, I don't trust any software firewall running on the local machine to be good enough for perimeter security.
And did you think to verify the CD, or read a few files off it on the 98 machine before testing it in Vista? If not, did you try the CD again in 98?
What kinda techie is this guy? - bonjourmr, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Blundering imbeciles!
- Spire3660, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Either that or thye mastered the disc wrong, used a CDRW, or a myriad of other things that can go wrong when burning a CD.
- aton111, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5The guy calls himself a techie and actually tried to install the DSL software that came with the modem/router? That alone qualifies you as a non-techie.
- MScrip, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4The best part is... they didn't even install Vista... they bought a new Vista PC. They had trouble with peripherals.
- jwoelmer2, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Don't forget that there is a large jump from '98 to Vista. Microsoft probably supposes that most users had switched to either ME or XP before going to Vista. I prefer my Ubuntu, but that's just me...
- mrsteve007, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3If you read the article, other than in a passing mention that the PC is for their grandpa, the story is about the father and son attempting to install and migrate old crap (AOL, ancient DSL modem connected via USB, and scanner) to the new system and having difficulties because they didn't have an internet connection to access the drivers they needed for the peripherals.
As for the rest of the problems, I bet that if they would have done this in Vista, they wouldn't have many of their installation issues with the old hardware: "Right click - program compatibility - XP sp2" That solves almost every installation issue I've come across, and I've installed many programs designed for win 98.
All in all, a big NON STORY, especially since there is no mention that the grandpa has any issues with the interface of Vista. - iofthestorm, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Seriously, they couldn't burn a CD that Vista could read? Does that even make any sense? Did they not realize that even Windows 98 has USB mass storage support, so they could have just used a flash drive with more capacity? Using a USB modem, they deserve any problems they have, since ethernet "just works" when you plug it in. Can't export AOL contacts? Give me a break, this guy's a moron.
- iamnobody8614, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Sounds like they were trying to combine 10 year old technology with new tech and expected just to boot up and go, a tad bit unrealistic, I think. And AOL has pretty much failed at everything since dial-up, so I'm not surprised they had trouble there.
